RENT
There is not a rent deduction or credit on your Federal return. If your state has anything for renters you will be prompted to enter your rent info when you complete your state return. As far as I know, the states that have anything for rent are Arizona, California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Vermont, Washington DC, and Wisconsin.
Not exactly, but if you meet certain requirements, you may use your rent in computing the credit. There is a Homestead Property Tax Credit. you can claim this credit if all of the following apply.
See www.michigan.gov/taxes for more information.
If you are required to file a Michigan Individual Income Tax return MI_1040, submit the Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit Claim MI-1040CR with your MI-1040. If you are not required to file an MI-1040, you may file the MI-1040C by itself. You have 4 years from the original due date to file your claim.
