1099-MISC Foreign entity no EIN

Hi!

I have a rental property in foreign country that brings very small amount of income. (< 1000$)  I'm filing a 1099-MISC for this rental but TurboTax won't allow me to submit my tax return because I don't have the EIN or SSN of the person who is renting.  What do I need to do?

Thank you!

Ersin

I’m not understanding your question. You don’t need to issue a Form 1099-MISC to your tenant. A Form 1099 is filed when you pay someone.

If you are receiving rent, you can report rental income on your tax form without a 1099-MISC.

  1. Type rentals in Search (magnifying glass) in the top right corner
  2. Select Jump to rentals
  3. On “Your 2022 rentals and royalties summary, select EDIT next to your property
  4. On “Here’s [your] rental property info, select Add income
  5. On “Select your type of income for [your property] choose Cash, checks and electronic payments (like Square or PayPal) and enter your rental income in USD

1099-MISC Foreign entity no EIN

hi @ErnieS0 ,

I probably should have said this originally but I'm using Turbotax desktop. Here are some more details:

I have a rental located in Turkey. I'm capturing the income from this rental under Business >> Rental Properties and Royalties.  There is a section which says Rental Income (checks, Cash, Forms 1099-Misc and 1099-K)  where I'm entering the income by filling out 1099-MISC.  In the form it is asking who paid me, payer's EIN or SSN. I have the name of the payer but not EIN or SSN since they are not from the US.  I've done the same thing last year but TurboTax did not require EIN or SSN.

I appreciate your help!

You should not enter a Form 1099-MISC if you never received that form. The income would go on Other income not on a 1099-MISC or 1099-K, and income from a barter or exchange.

If you insist on entering your rental income as a 1099-MISC you can use a dummy EIN number such as 99-9999999 or 11-1111111. It’s possible you will not be able to e-file with a dummy number.

Hello,

could you please explain where in the Desktop software can I enter my foreign rental income, if I don't have a 1099-misc?

Thanks!
