I had to file an amended Illinois tax return. I originally paid $37.  As a result of my amended return, I owed an additional $51 and turbo tax showed this.  Before e-filing my amendment, I previewed/printed my IL return and it showed I owed $51. I then proceeded to e-file my amended IL state return and then printed it.  It then showed that what was submitted was a return where $0 was owed!  On the form, line 31 (total amount paid w/original return $88 ($37+$51)).  Why?  I didn't pay the $51 previously and my current amended return and e-filing was supposed to pay the $51.  Why did turbo tax file a return stating I owed nothing and $51 was previously paid?  And why did it change it from the time I previewed the return to the time I e-filed, seconds later?
When it asks what year you received the legal services, mark just the current year.

Unfortunately, once you have upgraded or added features to your TurboTax return, there is no way to downgrade or remove the extra features. You would need to create a new return to go back to the original product.    To start a new return, select “Start a New Return” from under “My Returns” in the bottom left corner. Once you have started your new return, you can select “View All Returns” from under “My Returns”. Then delete the unwanted return by clicking the small Trash Can next to it or “Delete” under the return’s name.
Please clarify. Are your kids attending post-secondary college? Which credit (AOTC or LLC) did you claim in past years?

Helpful TurboTax Articles: What if I can't import my 1099? How can I fix my 1099 import issue? How do I import my 1099s? How do I enter a large number of stock transactions in TurboTax? If you received a "Success" message but your data hasn't appeared in TurboTax, it is likely due to recent browser security updates regarding Local Network Access.   To fix this you need to allow TurboTax to securely retrieve your data through your browser settings: Locate the View Site Information icon (the "tune" or "lock" icon) on the far left of your address bar, just before the URL. Find Local Network Access in the dropdown menu. Toggle the switch to ON. Refresh the page and attempt your import again. What do I do when my data isn't imported into TurboTax Desktop even though it says successful import in my browser? If permissions aren't the issue, one of the following factors may be at play: Brokerage Delays: While most forms arrive by January 31, many brokerages delay Consolidated 1099s (like the 1099-B) until mid-February due to complex reporting requirements. Availability: Your brokerage must specifically "release" the import file to TurboTax. If it isn’t ready, we recommend checking back. Connection Blocks: Active VPNs or aggressive Anti-Virus software can occasionally block the import feature between your bank and TurboTax. Try disabling them temporarily or switching to a different browser.

i bought a new vehicle in 2025 (its 100% business use). I've mad ea profit so can use the Section 179 deduction. If I do 100% of the deduction, I'm getting a rather large refund. I'd rather spread the section 179 deduction out over 2 or maybe 3 years to help with tax obligations in those years. Am I able to do that or do I need to use the standard deduction?

Everyone's tax situation is different and the complexity of your tax situation, meaning the forms needed to file your return, determines if you qualify for the TurboTax Free Edition.   The TurboTax Free Edition is strictly limited to simple Form 1040 returns. If your return requires additional schedules to report specific types of income or to claim certain credits, the system will prompt you to upgrade to TurboTax Deluxe or higher.   Here are the most common reasons you would be required to upgrade to a paid version: Unemployment Income: If you received a 1099-G for unemployment benefits, this is no longer covered under the Free Edition for the 2025 tax year. Itemized Deductions: If you are claiming deductions for mortgage interest, property taxes, or large charitable contributions on Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. Investment Income: Reporting stock sales, cryptocurrency transactions, or rental property income. Self-Employment/Gig Work: If you have 1099-NEC or 1099-K income and need to deduct business expenses on Schedule C. Education Credits: Claiming the American Opportunity Tax Credit or Lifetime Learning Credit (Form 8863). To see if you have forms that are not included in the free edition: Sign in to your TurboTax Online account. Select Tax Tools from the left menu and then click Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Look for Schedules 1, 2, or 3. If any of these are present (other than for the Student Loan Interest deduction or the EITC/Child Tax Credit), an upgrade is required. If you want to start over to remove an accidental entry:  Select Tax Tools  Clear and Start Over  This will erase all data entered so far
The purchase of a new personal residence, not being used as a rental, is not reported on a tax return.
