The extension gives you until October 15, 2026, to file your taxes without getting a failure to file penalty.  You don't get extra time to pay your taxes so you must pay any taxes that you may have that are due by April 15, 2026, so you won't be assessed the failure to pay penalty.   Refer to the TurboTax Help article How do I file an IRS tax extension? for instructions. If the amount on Form IT-360.1, Line 1b (NYC resident period wages) is higher than Form IT-203, Line 1, Column B (NYS source income), you have an allocation error. Per New York tax laws, your New York City resident wages cannot exceed your New York State wages for the same period.    As a part-year resident who was in NYC/NYS for 2.5 months and Hong Kong for 9.5 months, here is how to correctly allocate your $108,000+ income:   1. Form IT-203 (NYS Nonresident/Part-Year Resident Return)  On Form IT-203, Line 1: Column A (Federal Amount): Enter your total world income (approx. $108,000+), including the Hong Kong wages. Column B (New York State Amount): Enter only the income earned during the 2.5 months you were a NYS resident (under $8,000). Hong Kong Income: Do not include this in Column B. Since you were a nonresident of NY during those 9.5 months and the work was performed outside NY, it is not "New York source income". Foreign Earned Income Exclusion: If you claimed the exclusion on your federal return (Form 2555), you must also report it in Column A (as a negative adjustment on Line 21) to reduce your total federal income on the NY return.  2. Form IT-360.1 (NYC Change of Resident Status)  On Form IT-360.1, Part 1, Line 1: Column A (Federal Amount): Enter the same total income from IT-203, Column A ($108,000+). Column B (NYC Resident Period): This should match the income you earned while living in NYC (under $8,000). The Error: Your current "thousands" error likely comes from the software automatically pulling your total NYS wages into Line 1b. Line 1b must be less than or equal to IT-203, Line 1, Column B.  3. Allocation Worksheet (IT-203-B) If you were working for the same employer during both your NYC stay and your time in Hong Kong, you must use Schedule A of Form IT-203-B to allocate your wages:  Enter the total number of days in the year (365). Enter the number of days you actually worked in New York (approx. 75 days). The software will use this ratio to determine the NYS source amount for IT-203 and the NYC amount for IT-360.

@ Carroll4461 wrote: I didn’t get a pin from irs. Do I need both.  I'm sorry, but we can't know if you need to use a 6-digit IP PIN from the IRS or not. Did you get a letter from the IRS in late December or early January telling you that you need to use one and providing one?   Or if not, did you ever voluntarily opt into the IP PIN program?   The biggest clue as to whether you need an IP PIN for this year would be if you had to use the 6-digit IP PIN last year.   If you had to use one last year, then you would need to get a new one for this year, and we can tell you how to do that at the IRS website.      If the IRS expects you to have an IP PIN, and if you efile without it, then the efile will reject until you get it, enter it, and resubmit the efile.
