"There are many people answering questions in community. The expert tag lets you know that we are actual employees with credentials in the tax world. NYS is not taxable in NY but the IRS has not issued official guidance yet. Since it is a small amount of money, taxed at a low rate, I think many of us have decided better to err on the side of caution. Without official guidance, there is a chance of amending either way. As it is your tax return, it is your choice. Most people would rather over pay a few dollars rather than underpay with those consequences." That is a confusing message that seems to contradict the TT advertising; Is my refund maximized, or am I paying a little extra to cover shortcomings in the TT software? If the TT software is not correctly handling this situation with the 2025 NY State "Inflation Refund", but the TT error check indicates everything is ok, does Intuit still support me if NY rejects my tax filing? Note: I am not using not the free online version: I paid $100 for the Premier software to have on my desktop computer, and I am paying to file this return with NY ... if I have to refile because of a TT software issue after following employee expert advice on how to work-around the software limitations, who pays for the refiling, etc.?

Here is how to do this in TurboTax Online:
Navigate back to the Self-employment income and expenses section and select your business.
Choose the pencil icon to the right of Vehicle, and go through the interview, past the mileage entry.
The system computes the standard mileage deduction, and a screen will appear asking if you want the mileage deduction or want to enter actual expenses.
Select actual expenses. Now, you can enter things like gas and tolls. After the other expenses, you are asked for the cost of the vehicle. That is where to enter purchase price.

Each taxpayer over age 65 is eligible for their own 6,000 dollar additional senior deduction, whether filing jointly or separately. It is not a 12,000-or-nothing option. Married filing separately is usually the worse filing option for married taxpayers, and it would also do nothing in this case to increase their access to the enhanced $6,000 senior deduction. You should not elect MFS in this case, for this reason.

I am using Turbo Tax Business 2025. In the "File A Return" Section, TT states: "Before you file, the IRS requires you to attach an electronic copy of your signed Form 8453-FE to your return".

yes, this is a small problem --- required to report world income and at the same time exclude from US taxes.
Two options :
(a) just not report , since it is excludable --- but that would mean that unless you have some other "world income" to report, you may not have to file at all. No reportable income.
OR
(b) Report the income as wages --- Box 1 of W-2, nothing for all the other boxes . Then under other income, enter a negative exact amount with a note/legend " excluded --article 20 of US-Denmark ". Thus your Adjusted Gross income is zero. You may have to add an interest income of US$1 so that the AGI is non-zero -- so you can e-file the return. All of this is kind of clutzy. Part of the issue is that TurboTax does not have a clean way to enter and exclude under the "other" category and/or put legends.
My general sense is that in the interest of "reducing paperwork" and/or processing effort, IRS mostly prefers to not to deal with "non-reportable" income. However, for your records it is better to have proof that you indeed did recognize and then excluded income from US taxes per US-Country X tax treaty.
See this page from the IRS --> Foreign students, scholars, teachers, researchers and exchange visitors | Internal Revenue Service
Note that in this articulation , IRS is using "Non-Resident Alien" as is used by the immigration i.e. scholars/students etc. whom are in the USA temporarily and for a specific purpose ( studies, research etc.)

I've read the many replies but non mention how to enter STATE estimated taxes paid in the Federal part of the application. When I finally find where to enter the Federal estimated taxes, which took some digging, the only option I see is where to enter the Fed info. I don't see where I can enter the State estimated tax info. TurboTax, you really messed this up. I did not have this issue last year.

No, both do not have to be age 65 or older for the senior deduction.
If you are filing as Married Filing Separately you are not eligible for the deduction. If you are Single and your AGI is over $175,000 or Married Filing Jointly and your AGI is over $250,000 you are not eligible for the deduction.
If you are age 65 or older and meet the requirement, the additional deduction is automatically added on your federal tax return.
Standard deductions for 2025
Single - $15.750 add $2,000 if age 65 or older Married Filing Separately - $15,750 add $1,600 if age 65 or older Married Filing Jointly - $31,500 add $1,600 for each spouse age 65 or older Head of Household - $23,625 add $2,000 if age 65 or older
New Bonus Standard Deduction (OBBB): An additional $6,000 deduction for taxpayers 65 and older. This is per eligible individual, meaning a married couple both over 65 could get $12,000. Important: This bonus deduction is temporary, lasting from 2025 through 2028. Income limitations: It phases out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.
The amount is calculated on Schedule 1-A, Part V, with that amount flowing to Form 1040 Line 13b
Look at your Form 1040 -
You can view your Form 1040 plus Schedules 1, 2 and 3 at any time using the online editions. Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the online program screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

UPDATE: I've spend about 8 hours on the phone with TurboTax Support. I was very impressed with the effort of the first-line Turbo Tax experts. All 9 of them. They were very tenacious in their desire to fix this problem. Unfortunately, they had little help from their supervisors and were constantly thwarted by Turbo Taxes systems. Each time I worked with the first line support people, they took very detailed notes as to what we did. In two instances, I spent over two hours on the phone trying various solutions, only to find later that these notes somehow disappeared from Turbo Taxes systems. I was given two different "Support ID Numbers" which, supposedly, tracked our efforts. Despite these tracking numbers, subsequent experts were unable to see what had been done, resulting in considerable efforts re-plowing old ground. Although the problem was "escalated" on three different occasions, I often was unable to talk directly with the corresponding escalated expert. At one point, I was told that my account was "on hold" and that I must talk to the Billing Dept. In spite of several attempts, I was transferred to other people (including the Intuit Loan Dept), I never was granted access to the "Billing Dept." I was told on two occasions that an "investigation" have been started and that I would hear back as to progress but, as of this date, I have hear nothing. As tax deadlines are approaching, I was forced to file by mail. I've used TurboTax since the '90s and, on occasion, worked with TurboTax support.to resolve problems. Until now.

I use my download to do mind and my daughter's taxes. I send the download information and the license code to my father, two brothers, and sister so they can get the other . They don't live near me. They can then download it to their (compatible!) computers and do their taxes as they see fit. If they want to e-file they can pay for that themselves with the money they save by not buying their own copy of TTax. Although, now that you mention it, I guess they could email me their TTax file I and I can file it from my computer. Good to know!

You cannot add the depreciation for 2024 on your 2025 return. The best correction is to amend your 2024 return to claim it.
In general, you would only use the 3115 if you missed two or more years of depreciation (The IRS considers not taking depreciation for two or more consecutive years as an "established accounting method". Once you hit that two-year mark, you must use Form 3115 to change your method and claim a "catch-up" adjustment (Section 481(a) adjustment).)

To correct the error with the lump sum Social Security benefit, review your entries in TurboTax's Social Security section. Follow these steps carefully: 1. Confirm your 2025 benefits are listed on the initial Social Security page. 2. On the lump-sum payment summary screen, ensure the 2024 lump sum amount from your 2025 SSA-1099 is entered correctly. 3. When editing the lump sum, check that the payment year is set to 2024. 4. Enter the specific lump sum amount received in 2024. 5. On the next screen, verify that the Box 5 amount for 2024 is correct and not mistakenly taken from your 2025 form. Entering these prior year details correctly will resolve the error and update the taxable Social Security amount accordingly.

It's important to know what name and address is listed for the payer on your son's 1099-NEC. If it is the same company, using the same employer identification number (EIN) then I would advise the filing of Form 4852, as indicated previously. If the name and EIN are not the same as on previous W-2s your son received, then it's possible they may have a legal standing to issue the 1099-NEC (possibly because they are out of business).
Use that information to decide how to report, and if you see the name and EIN are the same as in earlier years, I advise to file and the wait for the IRS to respond. It's important to note that there could be interest and penalties for underpayment if they disagree with the use of Form 4852. Review Form SS-8 as well, however I believe you will agree your son was an employee.
How do I file a substitute W-2, Form 4852?
This will report your wages and you will also see the information for the SS-8 along the way. You will pay only the employee share of social security and medicare taxes.
If you do decide to use the Form 1099-NEC as though your son was self employed, use the link below.

Appears there is an error in 2025 related to the Lifetime Learning Credit. In 2024 I have the credit but in 2025 based on the same information provided it doesn't calculate. A new worksheet exists that transfers what is entered to the primary worksheet. The information on the new worksheet questions are checked yes and then this on the primary worksheet are incorrectly checked no. This appears to be an issue that needs to be corrected.
