Turbo Tax should make their product more compatible with Microsoft's browser, Edge, used by millions if not billions of people. Adobe Acrobat is a pain and I prefer not using it. They are constantly trying to get you to sign up for a paid version. What happened to just getting a simple Adobe Reader? I now feel so much better knowing MANY others had my issue. Turbo Tax you need to a better remedy than just download Adobe. Thanks.

It is automatic based on your age. It is not part of your Standard Deduction. The new Senior Deduction is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. The 6,000/12,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b with any other sch 1-A amounts. Turbo Tax automatically includes it if you qualify. For Single the deduction starts to phase out at 75,000 and maxes out at 175,000 For Joint the deductions starts to phase out at 150,000 and maxes out at 250,000 If you are married you have to file a Joint return And your SSN must be VALID for employment. Do NOT check the box saying Not Valid under My Info.
For Online version You can preview the 1040 or print the whole return https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/accessing/help/how-do-i-preview-my-turbotax-online-return-before-filing/00/26160 What do you have on 1040 or 1040SR line 13b? See the 1040 ….

Yes. The extra $6,000 (Enhanced Deduction for Seniors) is an additional deduction, that is separate, not included with the standard deduction. This additional deduction for seniors is calculated automatically based on the birthday you have entered in your tax return.    Note, this deduction has income limitations.  It begins phasing out at income of $75,000 for a single filer (or $150,000 married) and is completely phased out at income of $175,000 for a single filer (or $250,000 married).   This deduction is located on Schedule 1-A Additional Deductions, Part V. The total additional deductions will be summed and appear on your 1040, line 13b.   You can check this in TurboTax Online by navigating to Tax Tools on the left of your screen, choose Tools, then View Tax Summary. On the left of the screen, select Preview my 1040, then scroll to Schedule 1-A Part V for the Enhanced Deduction for Seniors.

This same confusing issue still exists in 2026 and your weird workaround of manually entering 0 for the cost basis (even when it was correctly found in the form) and then re-entering/pasing it in a couple screens later still works, thanks.

In the AI conversation within the online TT app, the responses conveyed that if the taxpayer data entered during tax prep in TT differs from the preparer name,  Turbo tax  concludes that there is a 3rd party preparer, and upon completion, will automatically email a link to the taxpayer to finish by reviewing the return, approving, and submitting with their own eSignature.    I am hoping this is accurate and its not hallucinating!

You won't necessarily see the result from the input screens or the summary page. There is a known issue where the "Deductions & Credits" summary page may show a sales tax number, even if it isn't being used for your actual return. Since you are using a Desktop version, you can check to see what deduction has been used by going to Forms Mode - click Forms at the top of your screen.   From the list of Forms shown on the left of the Forms screen, find and click on Schedule A. There, you can see which items are included in the total for Taxes You Paid, and whether you get the benefit of itemizing your deductions.    See this TurboTax tips article for more information about Schedule A and itemizing your deductions.

Q. -Can we still claim our son as a dependent in 2025 based on above?   A. Probably.   For the dependent support issue, you ignore scholarships. The $100K  and the 1099-MISC stipend/scholarship and what they paid for (tuition and room & board) do not count as support.  It may depend on how much the W-2 and 1099-NEC are.    There are two types of dependents, "Qualifying Children"(QC) and Other ("Qualifying Relative" in IRS parlance even though they don't have to actually be related). There is no income limit for a QC but there is an age limit, student status, a relationship test and residence test. A child of a taxpayer can still be a “Qualifying Child” (QC) dependent, regardless of his/her income, if: He is under age 19, or under 24 if a full time student for at least 5 months of the year, or is totally & permanently disabled He did not provide more than 1/2 his own support. Scholarships are excluded from the support calculation He lived with the parent (including temporary absences such as away at school) for more than half the year So, it doesn't matter how much he earned. What matters is how much he spent on support. Money he put into savings does not count as support he spent on himself. The support value of the home, provided by the parent, is the fair market rental value of the home plus utilities & other expenses divided by the number of occupants. The IRS has a worksheet that can be used to help with the support calculation. See: https://sites.allegheny.edu/human-resources//files/2019/05/IRS-Worksheet-for-Dependent-Tax-Status.pdf     Q. If we claim him as our dependent, can we choose to use alowertuition number in Box 1 (i.e. $2k) instead of the maximum allowable amount of $4k?  A. Yes   If you decide that he will not be your dependent, for 2025, come back and we'll deal with the remaining issues.  He can get the AOTC, it's just a matter of following the interview carefully and adjusting the 1098-T.

Does TT fill out Form 982 to deduct the bankruptcy discharge amount from 2025's income? Also, The amount on the 2025 1099-C discharged $2k more than the original amount discharged in the bankruptcy in 2011, 15 years ago. It was for a timeshare. I can fill in any details if needed, just need to know where to go from here with that. Thanks for your help.

Take a look at that section of your return and you can see if you should consider estimated payments. As you step through the screens answer any questions and you can choose not to print the vouchers if you don't need or want them. Follow the steps in the link below. How do I print estimated tax vouchers? - Steps printed below for convenience. Open or continue your return. Navigate to the 1040-ES section: TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to the 1040-ES screen under Other Tax Situations. TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1040-es and select the Jump to link or, Go to Federal Taxes. Go to Other Tax Situations. Under Other Tax Forms, select Start or Update next to Form W-4 and estimated taxes The estimated‑tax module is designed around the IRS safe‑harbor rules and typical workflows. Since it is a prediction and the 2025 tax year is the base for the basic workflow, it appears the 2026 information is not moving into the actual flow to the estimated tax forms. Although it does help you to know what amount you should consider in paying for estimated quarterly payments. In your situation, you are going in a reduced income situation which is not being accounted for.    For this reason you will need to make the adjustments on your actual payments using what you know will be the case for your reduced income. I will request a possible change, and then demand will likely dictate the results. Form 1040-ES 2026 Please update here if you need further assistance and we will help.

First, be aware that the 2024 and 2025 IP PINs are different. An IP PIN is a unique number sent by the IRS each year to victims of identity theft or taxpayers who opted into the protection program. You cannot e-file without this exact number, and you must use the new one issued for the 2025 tax year, as prior years' numbers will not work. If you are trying to e-file 2024, it is too late and you can instead mail in your return.   You can find your 2025 IP PIN on the CP01A Notice the IRS mailed to you in late 2025 or early 2026. If you do not have the letter, you can retrieve your code immediately at www.irs.gov/identity-theft-fraud-scams/get-an-identity-protection-pin.

For most donations, the IRS does not actually see the address of the charity on your final filed return; they only see the name of the organization and the total amount on Form 8283 or Schedule A. As long as the name and amount are correct, a small typo in the street address usually won't affect your filing.   If using TurboTax Online: Go to Federal in the left menu. Select Deductions & Credits. Scroll down to Charitable Donations and select Revisit next to Donations to Charity in 2025. You will see a list of the organizations you entered. Select Edit next to the one with the wrong address. Continue through the screens for that donation until you reach the organization's info page and update the address. If using TurboTax Desktop (CD/Download): You can use Forms Mode to type over the error directly: Click the Forms icon in the top right corner of your screen. In the list of forms on the left, find and click on the Charitable Contribution Worksheet (or Schedule A). Locate the section for that specific charity and click on the address field. Type the correct address directly into the box. It will turn red or blue to show it has been overridden or manually entered. Click Step-by-Step in the top right to return to the interview
