Sounds like something got stuck. You can try these things:   Log Out Completely: Before doing anything else, click Sign Out in the TurboTax menu. Clear Cache and Cookies: This removes old, "corrupted" data that might be confusing the website. Use an Incognito (Private) Window: This is the most effective "quick fix" because it launches the browser without any saved history or extensions (like AdBlockers) that often interfere with tax forms. Check Pop-up Blockers: TurboTax often opens forms (like the 1099 PDF) or payment windows in a separate pop-up. Look at the right side of your address bar for a small icon with a "red X"—click it and select "Always allow pop-ups from Intuit." Restart the Browser: Close all open windows of your browser entirely and then reopen it.   Most TurboTax errors happen because the browser is trying to use an old "session" from a previous visit. By clearing the cache or using Incognito mode, you force the browser to establish a brand-new, secure connection with the Intuit servers.

I’m looking for guidance on NY vs IL wage allocation for a 2025 part-year move. I lived in New York City from Jan 1 – Jun 5, 2025, and then moved to Illinois, where I worked remotely for the remainder of the year.   Details: - W-2 reports NY wages in Box 18 (tied to a NY office) - W2 has my IL apartment address, Employer address is NY.  - I have flight tickets to IL, lease of apartment in IL.  - Employment verification letter lists below, while also confirming continued employment throughout 2025 - Workplace indicator: Traditional office - Work location: New York, NY   However, in practice: - I worked fully remotely for the entire year and did not physically work in New York during 2025 - No NY office or desk was assigned to me - After my move on June 5, I worked exclusively from Illinois - My Illinois address was updated in company records after the move   Filing approach (draft): - NY part-year resident: Jan 1 – Jun 5 - IL part-year resident: Jun 6 – Dec 31 - Wages allocated between NY and IL based on time/residency (using Box 18 wages and NY days for NY portion, remainder to IL)   Questions: 1) Under NY’s “convenience of the employer” rule, do these facts (no physical NY workdays, no assigned NY office, fully remote work from IL after June 5) support allocating only a portion of wages to NY, or is NY likely to treat all wages as NY-source due to office assignment on the W-2/HR records? 2) In this situation, is it more appropriate to: - allocate wages between NY and IL based on residency/time, or - report 100% of wages to NY and claim a credit in IL (more conservative approach)? 3) How much weight does the employer letter (showing NY as work location) carry compared to contemporaneous evidence of actual work location (lease, move date, travel records, etc.)? I’m trying to choose the most defensible and practical approach that aligns with both NY’s convenience rule and IL part-year residency rules. 4) Wondering what I should enter for the 2nd field in the TurboTax query below: Title: Work Days Outside of New York Note: If you telecommuted to your job from a location outside the state, those days will still count as New York workign days unless specific conditions are met. Field 1: Outside of New York: 146 (Working days in IL) Field 2: Worked Outside of New York at Home: 0 or 146?    Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

@Finns2015  UPDATE:  edited original.  Further information as a discussion ensued.  The IRS stopped issuing revenue bulletins so many are saying since IRS did not declare it as non-taxable that it should be reported as  in face it is a  state tax refund....  Which would mean it only would possibly be taxable if you itemized deductions.  If you want to be conservative enter it as a state refund check and if you never itemized, it will not be taxable.   I want you to be aware that other TT employees will say it is taxable and why there is so much confusion around it.  It is NOT taxable to NYS, all agree to this and if you input it as part of state tax refund, it will not report it there.  I'm so sorry for the confusion.  This is one of those things you can take either side but, as a 1099 was issued others prefer to lean toward reporting it.

You should not change the original tax due.  You should not amend until the first return is processed and you pay the tax due. You need to pay the original tax due. You might not get the full amount back. You either get a refund on the amended return or owe more.   Then the amended return will only be the difference you get back or need to pay. You can confirm this by printing your amendment and looking at the 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 21 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16 (but don't include any penalty on 1040 line 38). If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20.   Go by the actual 1040X. Line 18 should be your original refund amount and line 22 should be your additional refund. If you paid on your original return it will be on line 16. If there is an amount owed with the amendment, it will be on line 20. Ignore any 1040V voucher that prints out and the new 1040. Those are what your return would have been if you had not needed to amend.

The simple thing is enter the 1098-T with 0 in box 1 and the net reportable income in box 5.     That said, you really haven't provided any info that indicates that the 1098-T isn't correct (you don't  know how tuition & Grants are calculated by the University, but you know the bottom line is wrong?  The 15% could have been applied to expenses rather than deposited to her account.

I have used Turbo Tax for over 10 years and have put up with the ads for added services but this year there appears to be a new spin. During filing I was charged $40 to use Santa Barbara TPG. What is the need or benefit of this service? What is the value added? On the web it seems they have a lot of negative comments.

Orline POPOV

I have already paid for TT expert assist and switching to the desktop version is additional upfront money with less features/benefits/ comparatively. I should be able to edit my Wisconsin schedule WD in the online version without having to pay any additional fees/costs.  It's not my fault that the information from federal's schedule D did not carry over lines 2,3, 9, 10 into my Wisconsin schedule WD. I am missing those capital losses. Do you have any other suggestions with how to proceed or file while I am waiting for TT to fix this issue? Thank You.

@docwas if you bought desktop you would not want to use online, they are different products and charged separately, so ignore online   instead of doing a new return and then Begin and the option to transfer a return and then selecting the .tax2024 file (where a lot of people have reported this issue of Continue not doing anything for whatever reason), instead go to File / Open Tax Return and open the .tax2024 file directly.  TT 2025 will recognize it as prior year and prompt you to transfer it into a new return.
