According to a TurboTax Help Article:   Employers can put just about anything in box 14—it's a catch-all for items that don't have their own dedicated box on the W-2.   In TurboTax, enter the description from your W-2's box 14 on the first field in the row. Enter the dollar amount and select the correct tax category that goes with that description.   If none of the categories apply, scroll to the bottom of the list and select Other (not classified). Don’t worry. We'll figure out if it impacts your return or not. If we need more information, we'll ask you.   If box 14 is blank, just skip over it. Don't enter a 0 for any blank boxes.

It sounds like you are entering a distribution from a retirement plan or IRA reported on Form 1099-R.  The distribution amount is reported in Box 1, but there is also a state distribution box 16.  Financial Institutions don't always populate that box, so it could be blank on your form.  If it is blank, you still need to enter a state distribution amount if there was any state tax withheld.  If this is the case, enter the amount from Box 1 (or Box 2a if there is an amount in that box).

@ezshopr    Go thru (edit) the forms that did have information on them, and make sure the numbers match what is on the actual paper/PDF forms the  brokerage sent to you.   IF they match, then you can delete the empty ones.  The empty ones might actually be prior year forms that transferred in from your tax filing from last year.

If your tax return is rejected, you can correct it and resubmit.   However, you won't have to correct it for the senior deduction as the senior deduction is automatically calculated by TurboTax based on the dates of birth you entered in the My Info section of TurboTax.   The senior additional deduction is not included in the standard deduction but appears on line 37 of Schedule 1-A of your form 1040, with that amount flowing to line 13b of your form 1040.   In TurboTax Online, you can only view Schedule 1-A after registering and paying the TurboTax fee.   But you can preview your form 1040 and check line 13b of your form 1040 which includes the senior deduction among other deductions if applicable, such as the tip deduction, the overtime or the car loan interest deduction.   To preview your form 1040 in TurboTax Online, follow these steps:   Open your return In the left-hand column, locate Tax Tools, click on the drop-down arrow then click on Tools On the Tools Center page, click on View Tax Summary In the left-hand column, click on Preview my 1040 Your form 1040 will display. Scroll down to line 13b   and you should see the amount of this deduction included in this line.

@gonzoj70   Sounds like you used desktop software.   You have forms mode with desktop, but just entering your information directly onto the forms instead of via the interview screens voids the accuracy guarantee.   By not going through the screens you missed an important question.   Hope you have it sorted out now.

I had someone from turbotax reach out to ask me to check if it was related to a checkbox about living outside of the USA.   I enter my values knowing what i want to work on instead of being asked questions and answers.  When i did that part of the return by answering the questions, it learned that i had not checked the box which was something about living abroad.  It must default to you have lived outside of the USA, which leaves SS not being taxed.  That is little bizzare of a default, just because the number of folks that fall into that category has to less than us that do not live abroad and draw SS.  But anyhow, that was why mine was showing SS equal zero.  Hope that helps if nobody from turbotax has not contacted you.

@taxdrama wrote: I am using desktop Deluxe TT. From the beginning itself, I have put the 1099-G in "1099-MISC and Other Common Income" and have now entered the parents' income info in the "Less Common Income/ Child's Income (Under Age 24)" section. This way TT is not erroring out and is allowing me to complete the Federal tax returns and prompting me to work on the state return. I am hoping this is the best path forward (even though I owe substantial kiddie tax now).  Delete the 1099-G and re-enter the income as scholarship income, following @Hal_Al 's previous instructions.
I have a 1099-B from Pershing LLC.  How can I import it into Turbotax?  It doesn't show up in the list of eligible financial institutions to import from.

My amended return is being rejected by the IRS.  I suspect this is because the taxable income on line 5 of form 1040-X is incorrect.  It does not match the taxable income reported on line 15 of form 1040-SR.  When can I expect this problem to be resolved?

I am a retired, married U.S. citizen and live in Italy. My spouse works as a nurse in Italy and is an Italian citizen (not U.S. citizen) and only files taxes in Italy. My only income is U.S. pension and Social Security. Since we married, I have always filed my taxes as married filing separately because my spouse's income is not derived in the U.S. One of the requirements to qualify for the new $6,000 senior tax deduction is that married couples must file "jointly". Can I switch to married, filing jointly in order to qualify for the new $6,000 deduction and NOT include my spouses income in my U.S. return?
