TurboTax (online) will not allow me to enter a Corrected 1099-R with zeroes in Bpx 1 and 2a.   The corrected 1099-R is intended to reverse a 1099-R sent to me in error for a nontaxable Trustee-to-Trustee Direct Transfer of a traditional IRA to another institution. To be clear, I used a Direct Transfer, not a Direct Rollover.   After some trial and error, I got TurboTax to accept the corrected 1099-R by entering 1.00 in Box 1 and BLANK in Box 2a.   Before I submit my Federal and State returns, I have some questions:   (1) Is it okay for me to use $1.00 for Box 1 and BLANK for Box 2a? Those values do NOT match what is on the corrected 1099-R form itself ($0.00 for Box 1 and $0.00 for Box 2a).   (2) If not, how can I enter $0.00 into Box 1 and $0.00 into Box 2a? I cannot seem to get it to work for me. Any suggestions and help will be much appreciated!

To trigger the questions about the non-taxable portion of your RMD and to complete IRS Form 8606 in TurboTax, first go back to your Form 1099-R to ensure that the IRA/SEP/SIMPLE box found below Box 7 is checked. If it is not checked TurboTax will not look for Form 8606 because it assumes it is not an IRA distribution.   Go to Wages & Income and select, Retirement Plans and Social Security, 1099-R... Select, IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), then Start/Review Click Continue through the interview, answering through next screens Answer the RMD questions, Continue When you reach, "Did you have any nondeductible IRA contributions...?", enter Yes, Continue Next, you will need to provide your total basis as of December 31, 2024, here you must provide the value of all of your Traditional, SEP and SIMPLE IRAs combined   To verify the Form 8606 was generated:   Go to Tax Tools on the left panel, then Tools, then Delete a form (only to view the Forms, not to delete), or go to Forms Mode at top right in TurboTax Desktop.

You can just not report the 1099-Q, at all, if your student-beneficiary has sufficient educational expenses, including room & board (even if he lives at home) to cover the distribution. You would still have to do the math to see if there were enough expenses left over for you to claim the tuition credit. Again, you cannot double dip!  When the box 1 amount on form 1099-Q is fully covered by expenses, TurboTax will enter nothing about the 1099-Q on the actual tax forms. But, it will prepare a 1099-Q worksheet for your records, in case of an IRS inquiry.   On form 1099-Q, instructions to the recipient read: "Nontaxable distributions from CESAs and QTPs are not required to be reported on your income tax return. You must determine the taxability of any distribution."

I am using the desktop version. I have switched to forms and looked through the list and there is no 1099-PATR form. I do not see where I can search? I did go into "open form" and inserted 1099-PATR but it only came up with the 2025 US Tax Form 1040: Individual Income Tax Form. I have looked at every tab and there is nothing to lead me to the form. Now I could go back through the process of entering my tax information and there was a box asking if I did receive any 1099-PATR but I left that box blank. The only thing to consider is that we did receive a K1 for our Family Real Estate Trust that has property categorized as real estate rental? We did receive a small payout for the sale of property in the trust. Other than that, there is nothing except for my losses in my LLC?

Non-residents are taxed at the current federal tax rates, plus a surtax of 48% of the federal tax. (If your income is earned from a business with a permanent establishment in Canada, you pay the provincial or territorial tax instead of the surtax.) You’re also subject to a 25% withholding tax on certain types of income such as dividends, rental payments, pension and OAS payments, and RRSP payments in Canada. The Ultimate Tax Guide For Non-Residents   A 14K non-resident surtax usually appears on a Canadian tax return for the year of emigration (2025) because, as a non-resident, you are subject to a 48% surtax on top of your federal taxes rather than paying provincial/territorial taxes.    This tax is likely triggered because you have Canadian-source income (employment up to August 2025, plus any other investment income), but the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is taxing you as a non-resident for the final tax return, which often results in a higher tax burden than a resident return.   2025 Income Tax and Benefit Guide for Non-Residents and Deemed Residents of Canada   For more clarification on this, we suggets contacting CRA directly at 1-800-959-8281 Skip the Line – Get faster help from the CRA   Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

If the system doesn't allow you to move forward after entering your ID, it may be caused by an entry error from your W-2 form, or some information that does not match with the IRS record. Please, try these: In your TurboTax account, go the Income & Expenses section  Find your W-2. Select the trash can icon to delete the W-2. Select Add a W-2 again and choose Type it in myself. Enter the EIN carefully. If the issue persists, it might be a good idea to update the program by clearing your browsers, cookies and cache:  How do I delete cookies  How to clear your cache

Thank you for trying to help. I'm looking at what shows on the screen. Have not been able to get any forms yet since I have not paid. After entering all the Deductions and Credits, it show that itemizing deductions is right for me, show the total of Itemized deductions versus Standard, and when I click on Show me the estimated breakdown, it first number is State And Local Income/Sales Taxes.  Property tax (Real Estate Taxes) shows separately and correctly. I don't have any other property taxes. No tax on vehicle registration was entered (don't qualify - I'm in Oregon). I did not carry over a 2023 refund to 2024. No sales tax in Oregon I did find $82 on my W-2 that was paid for Oregon transit tax, so it must be including that. The difference is still $35, which is the small local tax amount paid to the city, but I've already included that in my total, so it seems it must be counting that twice?   Very frustrating that there is nowhere to see what items & amounts make up the number listed for State And Local Income/Sales Taxes.  Any other ideas? Is there somewhere to see the breakdown of the State And Local Income/Sales Taxes besides going back into each section to try to determine what is going into that total?

1. It depends: Sch C is to report business income and pay self-employment tax. When you are not actively working the business, you do not use the Sch C. Being inactive one year, pauses the depreciation. It will pick back up when you are active again.  Many people have sporadic income for a variety of reasons.  If you are actively working but not enough to get a 1099-NEC, then you would continue to use the Sch C to report the income and expenses.   2. Expenses are claimed when you file Sch C along with depreciation-  Publication 946, How to Depreciate Property states: To be depreciable, the property must meet all the following requirements.  • It must be property you own.  • It must be used in your business or income-producing activity.  • It must have a determinable useful life.  • It must be expected to last more than 1 year.   3. Leave out Sch C when not actively working. If you are actively working, file a Sch C. Many people have a large Sch C and never get a 1099. It depends on the type of work you do. 4. Expenses that make your Sch C negative are a concern because your business must have positive income 3 out of 5 years for most businesses in order to be considered a business. Otherwise, the IRS may reclassify the business as a hobby and disallow all expenses and depreciation.   5. Example: Ben digs trenches for 10 years, filing a Sch C  claiming his equipment and expenses. Ben is seriously injured and unable to work for 2 years. No sch C is filed, no expenses are taken. Ben is finally able to work a little bit helping out friends, in his line of work and makes a little money from several people but no 1099 is issued. This is his line of work and he will file the Sch C and resume depreciating his equipment and claiming expenses. Ben can show that this is how he pays the bills and he is trying to make the business work again. It is not a hobby.
