The education credit rarely helps the student but the $500 for having a dependent can help the parents. Here is how to answer the questions: 1. Can another taxpayer claim you as a dependent? Answer: YES. * Why: This is the question that trips most people up. Even though you are choosing not to claim her, the legal reality is that you could (since you likely provide more than half her support and she is under 24). Answering "No" would be factually incorrect in the eyes of the IRS. The Follow-up: TurboTax will then ask, "Will this person claim you on their 2025 tax return?" She must answer NO. This is the "magic" combination that allows her to claim the credit herself. 2. Did you support yourself in 2025? Answer: NO. Why: Since she only earned $900 and you paid her tuition, she clearly did not provide more than 50% of her own financial support. Answering "Yes" could trigger an audit because her income doesn't match her expenses.  If you say yes here, she does become eligible for the refundable credit  but only when she provides over half of her own support or over age 24.   The student has no tax liability with only $900 of income so the portion (60%) of the education credit that reduces tax liability will go unused. The IRS is quick to audit the education credit at any sign of something off. Personally, I would not recommend you have the student take a credit when not qualified.

Thank you!    Based on your reply:   I am to report the DIV and INT (from my deceased mom's 1099 statement) on MY tax return for 2025 (I use turbo tax and e-file).  I am to print a nominee return so the IRS knows what I am doing by completing a 1099 DIV form and 1099 INT form along with a 1096 form? These 3 red print forms are to be mailed in an envelope to the IRS office (Utah location since I am in California) How do I report this for the State income tax return (we are in California)?    Also, you say “on each new Form 1099, list mom as the payer and you as the other owner, as the recipient. On Form 1096, list mom as the nominee filer, not the original payer.” Question - Why is she the “payer” if she is deceased - as of October 2024?     Lastly, can any of this be done electronically (or thru turbo tax) vs. mail (hardcopy)?
I am using the Turbo Tax for desktop. When I entered student information into the People Worksheet, it is not transferring correctly to the the student worksheet.  How can I get that resolve?

Hello, I am looking to find some clarity on a couple things.    First, some background information. I am in my early/mid 20s and have been filing as a non dependent for a while now. My mom took out a health insurance policy for me through healthcare.gov. She paid for that insurance, I paid nothing. I got married in mid 2025. I was hoping to file jointly with my wife, but now I am not sure.    Should I be allocating premiums between my tax return and my mothers? I did not pay for it or have any hand in taking out the policy.   Did I receive any advance payments of the PTC for the policy? I had no hand in the creation of, or payment of the insurance policy soooo... no? I think? There are amounts listed in Part III Column C of the 1095-A.   My wife and I were set for a decent payout from our tax return, but after adding in the 1095-A, we end up owing. If I I'm a little confused on how all this works. Would filing separately reduce the amount of APTC I have to pay back? Am I even technically claiming any of the APTC when I have no hand in paying for the policy? How do I move forward?   Thank you in advance, and let me know if I can clarify anything.

If you have a retirement plan through your employment or a union, it is likely a qualified retirement plan. If your Form W-2 has a check above Retirement Plan, this is also an indication that it is a qualified plan.   Some common examples of qualified retirement plans include 401(k), 403(b), profit-sharing, money purchase, or defined benefit pension plans. Examples of nonqualified retirement plans would be Personal IRAs (Roth or Traditional), deferred compensation plans for executives, or non-governmental plans.    If you are unsure, the easiest way to find out is to ask your employer or HR department.   Click here for What's a qualified retirement plan? How to Access prior year online returns https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/prior-year-return/help/how-do-i-access-my-prior-year-return/00/27010 If you can't get the side menus to open up to access the prior year..... You need to start entering some basic Personal Info in 2025 for the side menu to open up. Just continue a little ways into 2025. I had to go though about 12 screens. If you used the Desktop CD/Download program then the only copy is on your computer and not saved or stored online. So you need to make and keep your own backups. Or request a transcript from the IRS https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript Or get a copy of your return using form 4506 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506.pdf   OR do you need to prepare a 2023 return? To do a prior year return you have to buy the Desktop program here, https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products You will need Windows 10 or Mac Monterey 12 to install it on.

DianeW777,   As noted above I am using TurboTax Desktop. I opened the return and navigated to Online > Send Tax File to Agent. I generate the token and I wrote down the value. I was never prompted to enter my email address as you wrote ( Enter your email used for TurboTax > Enter your code > Send ).   It's unclear to me where I do step 3. Is that some screen in "Send Tax File to Agent" that didn't display? Am I to reply to this thread with the token number and state like you instructed TurboTax Online users to do?   Matthew

Agreed,  they accepted my return.  Audit risk is low since i did not receive a PTC.

@home office for rental property wrote: I have the same issues with rental property depr. recapture.   Counts whole gain (in the principal pay-downs) over the remaining cost basis as capital gain rather than apportioning recapture.    I've been getting the 27.5-year depreciation schedule treatment   I'm not entirely certain what you are saying is happening, but this may help:   The gain due to straight-line depreciation of real estate is NOT "recapture".  It is called "Unrecaptured Section 1250 Gain".   Unlike "recapture", the "Unrecaptured Section 1250 Gain" is NOT all immediately taxable upon the sale, but is part of the spread-out gain for the Installment Sale.   With that in mind, is it correct on the tax return?

Thanks for the response.  The input mileage amounts are the same.  I file a Schedule C with my 1040 return.   Here is all the input. FYI that the business code is 236100…residential construction GMC Sierra 2500HD Truck > 6,000 lb 10/2/2025 for when I started using the truck for work Yes I own the Vehicle Not available for personal use (did try with yes response as well) Do have another vehicle for personal use (also tried with no response) No, did not document miles because it is 100% business use. (Tried with yes as well) No to did I track personal use (tried with yes as well) Input total miles and business use miles with the same number Zero for committing miles. 0-4 vehicles (do have a second truck that uses standard mileage rate) Yes to see if actual expense give a bigger deduction Input actual expenses incurred  (Gas, tires, insurance) Yes to used by someone who owns business more than 5% Truck not used for hire (taxi) Vehicle was used when purchased (tried new as well) No trade in Input purchase date 10/2/2025 (same as date used for work) Input purchase price Did not input any other items  (Parking, tolls, etc.)   I tried deleting the truck and adding it again.  Same result.   The car and truck expense worksheet says the truck is not eligible for Economic Stimulus or section 179 property.   It should apply the section 179 $31,300 limit plus the 100% bonus depreciation.

I am seeing an excess of $1000 under the excemption amount in TurboTax online under the heading "Your New Jersey Bottom Line (NJ1040)" under personal excemptions.   I have not filed yet, so cannot see the form NJ 1040.  My daughter is born prior to 2003.   I would assume once I file for NJ, system will use this amount in line 12 of NJ 1040, which is not correct for the scenario I mentioned that the college going child is born prior tp 2003.
How do get the 1040 form 2023
