Hello, My husband and I both just opened a Roth IRA and maxed out our 2026 contributions. We made no contribution to a Roth IRA in 2025 but we were filing married filing separate for 2025 taxes for student loan purposes (my already expensive payment more than doubles if we file joint). I have decided that next year we will file joint because what we are missing out on filing separate isn't outweighing the benefit of a low student loan payment. Do I need to remove my Roth IRA 2026 contribution if I plan to file our 2026 taxes jointly?
I spent a lot of time volunteering at USA swim meets, can those hours, miles and lodging cost be deducted, and if so how do I enter them?

I've cleared my cache, cookies, deleted my bank information, and verified with Bank of America that the routing # is correct, but TurboTax still will not allow me to e-file my return.  The red error message says "Double check that you're using the correct routing number." ... which I've done multiple times.   Is there a way to bypass this screen and finish e-filing?

Hello DianeW777 Thank you for  your reply. Appreciate it.   I am in a pickle now on which path to take to avoid the self employment (fica) taxes on this onetime stipend income : [1] Remove 1099 NEC form and follow your instructions to report the stipend under "Scholarships/Grants" or  [2] Use 1099 NEC form and chose HOBBY.   Which one is safer to not trigger an IRS audit ? Since the IRS has received these 1099NEC details from the payer and expecting self employment taxes.    The earlier version of TT provided more details for the HOBBY option like below. This is NOT money earned as an employee or self employed individual ; it is from a sporadic activity or hobby   Here is the link https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/self-employed-group/discussion/my-1099-nec-form-was-from-an-internship-how-do-i-report-that-on-my-taxes-since-it-is-not-my-business/00/2975624   I will wait for your guidance. Thanks
How you enter Cash in Lieu from a spinoff in TT?
Were you able to resolve this? If not, can you give us more information as to what sort of issue you are having?

Actually, I just realized that one of the questions in the educational section asks if the amount of box 5 in the 1098-T was included in income section (W2 or 1099-MISC). Once I checked that and entered the amount in the income section, everything worked! I was able to add the Roth IRA. And didn't have to change the 1098-T amounts.

I am trustee for my parent's trust since their death. Their home was titled in their revocable trust (now irrevocable sub-trusts for the benefit of myself and my brother).  I have allowed my brother to live there. Since by law I am technically the owner as trustee, my insurance agent told me that in order to get homeowners insurance, the house is considered trust business property, and I would need a rental agreement between the trust and my brother. So, I created a lease for him but only charge him $1/year. I pay the property taxes, water bill, insurance, and repairs from my brother's sub-trust. Since the rental income is only $1/year, can I deduct the expenses that I mentioned on Schedule E which reduces the amount of income that is reported as being distributed to my brother or should I just count all of these expenses as distribution for the benefit of my brother since they are all originating from trust income?
Yes, start at the beginning of this thread and read the entire thread (especially my communication with Intuit rep) where everything is explained.
