The IRS Farmer's Tax Guide -pub 225 - allows you to claim the Farm Optional method (explained on page 81). Pub 225 states: . You can use this method if you meet either of the following tests.  1. Your gross farm income is $10,860 or less.  2. Your net farm profits are less than $7,840.   Since you need at least $2500 of positive income to claim credit for the kids, this will allow you to claim the credit and keep your Social Security credits active.   The child tax credit is for children under 17 and the value did increase for 2025, up to $2200 per child. It wouldn't hurt to try the optional method, pay a little SE tax and get a big child credit- if you qualify.

So I started a new return and entered nothing but one of my student's 1099-T, 1099-Q and additional expenses (room and board, books). Simplifying the numbers a bit but let's say   Expenses = 30,000 Distributions = 26,000 --------------------------------- Looking in the forms view it shows In the "For purposes of Regular tax" line 2c as $20000 instead of $30000 And an excess distribution of $6,000 which is then transferred as taxable income to my 1040   All of the distribution should be allowed and not taxed.   In the "For Purposes of 10% Additional Tax" column for line 2c it lists the full $30,000
Can someone tell me how to do this? I scheduled a date in March for my 2025 state taxes due to automatically be paid and I want to change that date.

It's a requirement to list the first 4 most expensive windows.  If all the windows you installed are the same size and model number, you could just divide the total cost by the number of windows.  But if some were larger or different types, you may need to contact the installers.  However you also can't claim any part of the labor to remove the old windows and install the new ones, you can only claim the cost of the product, not preparation and installation.    https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-form-5695

After a return is rejected you cannot change the 'You've chosen to deduct your TurboTax fees from your federal refund', nor can I change the refund payment method to be a check.   When I resubmit, I want the fees to Turbotax to be paid by my card.  But I want the refund through the mail.   After an earlier rejected return, the system won't let me change it

To claim the credit, your adjusted gross income must be $500,000 or less if married filing jointly, or $250,000 or less for all other filing statues.  If you AGI is over these limits, this could be why the property tax credit is not populating.   If your income is in range to claim the credit, be sure that you entered your property tax payments in the Deductions & Credits section of the Federal return.   Next check your entries in TurboTax for IL.  A screen for IL credits and taxes as the title will have under Personal home and family credits the property tax credit - click Revisit.   On the Credit for property taxes screen, all 4 questions on that page need to be answered yes in order to qualify.   You'll enter your Property information on the next screen.   Any amount of taxes not on the residence or taxes that were deductible elsewhere are entered on the next page.   This should allow the credit to calculate.

Yes, you would enter a non-deductible IRA contribution in TurboTax, if you came to the conclusion the income was taxable and you and you turned around and made a non-deductible contribution to the IRA. You do that in the Deductions and Credits section of TurboTax, then Retirement and Investments, then Traditional and Roth IRA contributions. Enter it as a traditional IRA contribution and when asked if you want it to be non-deductible, answer "yes" and enter the amount.
