If your social security is not being taxed properly in TurboTax you can try deleting your Form(s) SSA-1099 and reentering them. You can follow the instructions listed below to easily get to those screens in TurboTax.
Your age does not directly affect how much of your Social Security is taxed. The taxable amount is based entirely on your total income, including your Social Security Income and your other income reported.
In general, your Social Security income is not taxed if your combined income—(defined as your Adjusted Gross Income plus your non-taxable interest plus one- half of your total Social Security benefits)—is below $25,000 for single taxpayers and $32,000 for taxpayers filing as married filing jointly.
The new $6,000 "senior deduction" for those 65+ (for Tax Years 2025–2028) may also reduce your tax liability.
For the 2025–2028 tax years, there is a new, temporary "$6,000/$12,000" senior bonus deduction that was made available under the One Big Beautiful Bill (OBBB). TurboTax will calculate this deduction automatically based on your date of birth.
This "senior deduction" is in addition to the standard deduction for being 65 PLUS, as long as your Modified Adjusted Gross Income (MAGI) is below $175,000 for single taxpayers and $350,000 for taxpayers filing as Married Filing Jointly. Phase-out for this deduction begins at $75,000 for single taxpayers and $150,000 for taxpayers filing as married filing jointly.
You can get to your TurboTax screens to delete your Form(s) SSA-1099 or make corrections to your entries if necessary, as follows:
Click on Search at the top right of your TurboTax screen
Type "Form SSA-1099" in the search box
Click on the link "Jump to Form SSA-1099"
This will take you to your TurboTax screens where you enter your Form(s) SSA-1099.
