TurboTax automatically calculates the additional senior deduction based on your date of birth and your income. You will see it on Schedule 1a, line 13b of your 1040 form. There is nothing extra that you need to do. Taxpayers who are 65 and older may qualify for the additional deduction of $6,000 ($12,000 for MFJ). To be eligible for the additional deduction, you must meet the eligibility criteria below: Be 65 or older by December 31, 2025 File Married filing Jointly if married Modified adjusted gross income under $75,000 ($150,000 for MFJ). The deduction phases out for taxpayers above this income Review the TurboTax articles Tax Counseling for Seniors and the IRS Fact Sheet Deductions for Seniors for more information. Also, if you are using the desktop version, go into Forms Mode, and in the left column list of forms choose the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gains Tax Worksheet (may be abbreviated as Cap Gains Wks) and review the calculation on it. You can also review the Schedule D, and if applicable, Form 8949. When you report back, please describe exactly what you are doing and where, as Tax Expert @DavidD66 requested above. Be aware this is a public Internet forum, so do NOT post any personal info here.

The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO. You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)
The deduction is not on the same line as your standard deduction. It is shown separately.on line 13b.
2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS
SINGLE $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750 (65 or older/legally blind +1600)
MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500 (65 or older/legally blind + $1600)
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)
For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.
(The deduction phases out completely at $175.000 Single or HOH, or $250,000 joint)
The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e. Turbo Tax automatically includes it.

If you are not getting the senior deduction it is because
Your date of birth in MY INFO shows that you were not 65 by the end of 2025
Your income is too high
You are filing married filing separately

You will file in the state the income is sourced. If you’re performing work from your home state, that income is sourced to your home state. However, work that is physically performed in the other state, is taxable to that state. A nonresident tax return will need to be filed to report that income.
In TurboTax Desktop, you’ll complete your federal return first, then purchase and download the additional state program(s). To ensure accurate calculations, always complete the nonresident return first if filing in multiple states because your resident state might give you a credit for any taxes paid in that situation.
The interview questions will help allocate income based on your responses.

I spent almost 2 hours on the phone with support for this exact issue last week. They had no idea how to fix it. I was told an escalation was created with my case and this discussion post, and I would receive an email when it is resolved. No update yet, and as of today, 2/22/26, I am still unable to file my state return.

@ kinhingchan wrote: " What can I do if my tax files were lost in my laptop? will turbotax restore my lost tax file in my laptop?" Was the tax file prepared in the desktop software? If it was prepared Online, you may be able to retrieve it from your Online TurboTax account as @SharonD007 mentioned above. In any case, have you searched your entire system for any file ending in *.taxYYYY where YYYY is the year? You can also search on just *.tax and also check the Recycle Bin. If you are using Windows version, and if you have multiple Windows user accounts, such as an Admin account, etc., then log into each Windows user account to do the searches. Also, if you use any cloud storage such as OneDrive, look there, too. I've seen a couple of users say their tax data file had ended up in OneDrive even though they don't normally use it.

Depending on your state, and the types of information and forms you have on your state return, you could be required to submit your return by mail.
If TurboTax says the return is "ready to mail", it means that either
you have not E-filed the state tax return yet.
You may not have been able to E-file the return, or
You may have chosen to print and mail the return
You can go back through the File section and see if you are required to mail the return or if you accidentally chose to mail instead of e-filing.
If you have to mail the return, TurboTax will provide instructions if you choose this option.
You can check the TurboTax Forms Availability Tool to see whether any of your state return forms are not supported for e-filing.

This question is asked to determine if you used the loan funds on the home or not. If you did NOT use the money on your home, then the interest you pay on the loan would be non-deductible. If you refinanced the home and used the funds on the property, then the interest you paid on the loan IS deductible as a mortgage interest deduction if you're itemizing (not taking Standard Deduction). Since you mentioned that the funds were indeed used on the home, you would answer $0 went to other projects.
NOTE: This all comes into play IF you are itemizing your deductions. If you are not itemizing your deductions and are taking the Standard Deduction, then these questions will have no tax effect on your return.
