So instead of 10000, the maximum amount a person could deduct should be 6000.00 Yes, it reduces the deduction by $200 for each $1000 over $100,000. However, did you pay $10,000 or more in loan interest? It reduces the DEDUCTION, not the maximum cap. With $120,000 of income, your deduction is lowered by $4,000. If you paid $4,000 or less of interest, your deduction will be $0.

Hello — I believe there may be a calculation logic issue in TurboTax related to the new car loan interest deduction. Based on TurboTax guidance, the MAGI phaseout reduces the maximum allowable deduction, not the interest paid. When a taxpayer is within the phaseout range and the actual interest paid is below the phased-down cap, the full interest paid should still be deductible. Currently, TurboTax appears to return a $0 deduction in this scenario, while allowing a deduction equal to the phased-down maximum when a much larger interest amount is entered. This suggests the phaseout is being applied to the interest paid rather than to the maximum deduction. I believe this may represent a calculation bug and would appreciate escalation to the technical team for review.

If you efiled the federal return it is just sitting on Turbo Tax servers waiting for the IRS to open on Jan 26, 2026. You can't efile state until the federal has been accepted by the IRS.

It asked me again so I just closed the program and took out a flash drive that was plugged in and tried again. It worked. Each tax year has to be filed separately using the forms for the specific tax year. They cannot be combined in any way--do not even put them in the same envelope when you mail them.
You cannot change the tax year. The current online program is for 2025 only. Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.
Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and 2024 is permanently closed.
Note: The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac. It cannot be used on a mobile device.
To file a return for a prior tax year
If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024 you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign, and mail the return(s)
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.
Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s. Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.
Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses. Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

I sold my north woods vacation home in the year and did not use a broker. I entered the high-Level details under "investments--other" as suggested by a person I talked to at Turbo Tax. However, the program calls for the name of the broker. The help specialist indicated that i should type in "sale of second home" in this space." Wouldn't "None" be more appropriate? Also, the form does not include any of the details of the basis simply the adjusted cost. Shouldn't the purchase cost and subsequent improvements be detailed separately?

The TurboTax online editions are only for tax year 2025 and cannot be changed.
To complete and file a 2023 and 2024 tax return using TurboTax you would need to purchase, download and install on a personal computer one of the desktop editions for each tax year required from this website - https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/
A 2023 and 2024 tax return can only be printed and mailed, they cannot be e-filed using TurboTax. Use a separate envelope when mailing each tax year.
