Wrong!   If the only option is in the cloud, I'll just revert to doing it manually, as I did for many years before there was tax software available. Also, due to the change in tax laws, most of my "deductions" are no longer deductible, so I've been using the standard deduction for the last few years, so it won't be a big deal. Also, in 1971, I was doing taxes professionally in Boston for a lawyer, and life was much more complicated back then . . . I had a musician client who needed to depreciate a Stradivaris violin (they last 100s of years) and a person who was a convicted murderer who was running a headshop . . . just a couple of examples of challenges.

No.  see publication 463.  https://www.irs.gov/forms-pubs/about-publication-463   If you are a W-2 employee, your employer can reimburse you for travel expenses for temporary assignments.  In this case, "travel" means far enough away from your usual home that an overnight stay is required.  "Temporary" means that the work is expected to last, and actually does last, less than a year.  Even if the assignment is expected to last less than a year, as soon as you hit that one year mark, it is no longer eligible for tax-free reimbursement, and if the company does help pay for expenses, the money must be added to your taxable wages and is subject to regular income tax and social security and medicare tax.

My ex-husband and I have historically filed on a desktop version, where I also filed my mother's and sister's taxes. Now that my husband retained the computer with the TurboTax software, is there any way to get the information on to my new computer or online version so I don't need to start from scratch for the three returns I prepare?

My point is TT should not sell the software they know it's useless, or at least stated clearly when will the software will be ready to everyone plan to purchase. Or claearly state what's available function as is. Like many people, I was to "estimate" my tax before year end. Even link request to the update is useless, because they never give you a date, not even an estimate date. Not sure if this constitue a fraud? Any lawyer here?

@ricepapa1951    Yes, "Online" Deluxe includes the form 5695 for that.   It isn't scheduled to be ready in the software until after 14 January. _____________ But...if you have any significant investment income (like annual distributions from mutual funds, or sales of stocks) you will be prompted to update to the Online "Premium" version at that point.  Of course, Premium includes the form 5695 too.

To claim the deduction, the taxpayer must be both (a) the person who owns the car, and (b) the person who makes the payments.  Assuming your parents file a joint return, then they are "one taxpayer" (sort of) and it doesn't matter if the money came from a bank account owned by the spouse who is not on the title.   If they decided to file separate returns (as married filing separately) the answer is probably no, mom can't take the deduction, although I would have to double-check that.
Already having problems with updates just like all the past years!   I TT gets it together this year. Updates should be flawless and <1 minute should mean just that!

I no longer want my W-2 to be imported to TurboTax. How can I discontinue this service?
