I understand how to do this, have been doing this for many years. I have only one 1099-INT with amounts in both boxes 1 and 3. I created a new 1099-INT with only box 1 and no adjustments. I went into the pre-existing 1099-INT and removed the amount in box 1, keeping the amounts in boxes 3 and 12 and the adjustment for accrued interest. Result: UGH! Before this change, TurboTax GA Schedule 1, line 10, Interest on U.S. obligations was high by $123. Now it is low by $460. Neither of these amounts are close to any relevant amounts. After that, being desperate, I deleted both of those 1099-INT forms, saved the file, closed TurboTax, opened it again with that file, and reentered those 2 forms, one with box 1 only and the other with the other stuff. Same result.   THIS IS SO UPSETTING! HOW WILL I GET MY TAXES DONE?

Hello, I am a J-1 Research Scholar and I have a residency determination question. My travel history: First stay: Aug 26, 2018 – Jul 12, 2020 (J-1) Outside US: 2021–2022 Second stay: Sep 8, 2023 – present (J-1) I was treated as a resident for tax purposes in 2020 and 2024. For 2025, Sprintax classifies me as a nonresident, but I believe the “2-out-of-6 year rule” for J-1 researchers may make me a resident under the Substantial Presence Test. Should I file Form 1040 or Form 1040-NR for tax year 2025? Thank you.

Am I supposed to mail 800 pages? (I'd upgrade to Premier Desktop, but I don't know if that would let me avoid mailing anything or not.)

There is no way to enter this to avoid tax liability. Here's why. The IRS looks at the value of your Traditional IRA at the end of the year (December 31). Because you rolled your 401(k) into your Traditional IRA within the same calendar year as your conversion, the IRS put all of your Traditional IRAs into the same bucket.   Because of this, you now have a large pre-tax balance in your Traditional IRA on December 31.   The only way to have avoided this was to have a zero balance in all Traditional IRAs on December 31.   If you had rolled that Traditional IRA money back into a current employer's 401(k), it would not have been counted in the calculation.   Now, you should ensure that you enter your after-tax 401(k) funds as the basis to slightly lower your taxable percentage.

Thanks. I appreciate the suggestion, but, I tried this and still no luck and NO IMPORT. I also went through Co-pilot's suggestions without success. All fingers point to Turbo Tax's importer. Hope they provide an update quickly. Otherwise, I will need to see if the Schwab export and then Turbo Tax import manual method works.

If you requested to have the TurboTax account fees deducted from your federal tax refund, the IRS will send the refund to a third party processor to have the fees and the $40 service charge deducted. The third party processor will deduct the TurboTax fees plus the $40 service charge and then attempt to direct deposit the remaining refund balance into the account that you entered on your tax return. For the status of your tax refund you will need to contact the third party processor, Santa Barbara Tax Product Group, using their website - https://www.sbtpg.com/ Tax Products Group Contact Information - https://help.sbtpg.com/hc/en-us/articles/230084587-Contact-Information Call 1-877-908-7228 Or email - TPG-CSsupport@greendotcorp.com

I have a similar very bad experience with TurboTax Desktop with entering 1099-Q and 1098-T forms. I have spreadsheets to prove that my 529 plan distribution for my dependent was not in excess of our total combined education expenses. I entered the tuition & fees expenses in TurboTax through the 1098-T, and then I entered the room & board expenses in a separate box. The 529 distribution adds up to the combined amount to the cent, but TurboTax still says we owe about $500 in taxes. I opened the "forms" section to see what TurboTax is doing behind the scenes but can't make heads or tails of anything. Nor can I seem to change any of the values in the hidden worksheets. I'm going to just skip reporting any of this to the IRS because I have proof on paper that this money was only used for qualified expenses. But TurboTax really needs to fix this. It should not take a bunch of forum diving to figure out that I should just ignore this.

The Form 1040-X for amending a 2025 federal tax return is estimated to be available in TurboTax on 02/25/2026   An amended return, Form 1040-X, can only be printed and mailed to the IRS if the original tax return was not e-filed. The IRS will take up to 20 weeks or longer to process an amended tax return. Before starting to amend the tax return, wait for the tax refund to be received or the taxes due to be paid and processed by the IRS. Yes, you must include this with your other income and the steps below will allow you to include it for your federal return and at the same time remove it from your New York State (NYS) taxable income.   Do not enter it as Other Income directly or it will not be reflected correctly on both the federal and NYS return.   The following steps should help with the answers when entering the New York State (NYS) inflation refund check. By using the steps below it will be subtracted from your NYS income and taxed to federal as required.   Do not enter it as Other Income directly so that it will be reflected correctly on both the federal and NYS return.   STEP BY STEP – NY INFLATION REFUND CHECK IN TURBOTAX (1099-G) Open your return in TurboTax > Select Federal > Wages & Income > Other Common Income > 'Refunds Received for State/Local Tax Returns' > Add or Revisit At 'Did you get a state or local tax refund in 2025?' click YES OR on the Summary screen select Add more refunds When asked about the refund you received in 2025, enter the following: State: New York Tax return year: 2023 Payments and withholding: 0 (be sure to enter the zero) Refund amount: enter full amount you received or ONLY YOUR SHARE (half if MFS) Continue. On the screen 'Let's check if your 2023 New York refund is taxable' >'Does either apply to your 2023 New York return?' Even though you took the standard deduction, select: NO (this is not a regular state refund-- Note: TurboTax will include it as taxable on your federal return while subtracting it from NYS correctly.) 'Tell us the taxable amount of your refund' Enter the dollar amount of the refund > Continue When the federal return is complete, go through your state return, then you can preview each return. If you would like to preview your form you can use the steps below. (Form 1040, Line 8z-Other Income).  IT-201 will show the subtraction from NYS income. From the left rail menu in TurboTax Online, select Tax Tools (You may have to scroll down on the left rail menu.) Select Tax Tools On the drop-down select Tools On the pop-up menu titled “Tools Center”, select View Tax Summary  On the left sidebar, select Preview my 1040  For TurboTax Desktop, change to 'Forms' and review the forms.   @DebraMcGann

It is so ridiculous that you cannot sort the charities list. I have 45 charities from last year, and you ask me if I contributed to them this year, and they are in complete random order. How the heck can I tell?   This is a real shortcoming, and you haven't fixed it since reported at least as early as 2021.   Mary Simpson
