I need to amend my 2025 tax returns because of new 1099 MISC information.  My original return was e-filed and accepted.  I have received a tax refund from the IRS.  I updated TurboTax  on March 2 after being notified by TurboTax. QUESTION: When I tell TurboTax I want to amend my return shouldn't  it  load my original return that I filed and let me modify it?  It refuses to do that.  Instead starts a new return.  Is anyone else having difficulty with this? Thanks, Walter

Thank you! Just a few more clarifying question(s):   1. I will need to amend my 2024 tax return - will the IRS bill me or is there an option for the amount to be taken out of my 2025 tax return/added to the 6% penalty on my 2025 tax return?   2. If I don't include the form 1099-R info I calculate on my amended 2024 tax return, but do include it on my 2026 return once I receive the actual 1099-R in 2027, is 2026 when I would be paying taxes on any of the earnings/NIA included on the excess contribution removal? I thought I would have to pay taxes on the related earnings somewhere in the process, and my assumption was I would be paying taxes through the 2024 tax return given those earnings are associated with the 2024 contributions/tax year   3. Will it just list code J on the 1099-R? I thought I read somewhere it would list P and J, but maybe that is related to the timing of the removal/distribution   Thank you for the quick response here, I really appreciate it!

Hi there,   I'm in a very similar boat regarding being unable to import from Schwab.  It is March 1, and Schwab informed me that the import to TurboTax is currently enabled.  However, when I go through the import process, I end up on a screen that says      ttd-fdp-ui-config-v2.app.intuit.c*o*m* wants to     ... and that's it.  No other indication of what it's trying to do.  When I click the page's Allow button, nothing happens.  No import occurs.  The first time I did this, my browser popped up a message asking me to allow that same address to do something - but it was again a blank thing that it was asking me to approve and I didn't know that was TurboTax asking me something legit - so I blocked it.  After trying a number of additional times with the intent of allowing it, the pop-up never appeared again.  I cleaned the cache from within Chrome and tried again.  But it still wouldn't do anything aside from giving me that "Security Check" web page with the incomplete description.   Can you please help?  I'm stuck and can't move forward until I get the import to work :(

This is just a summary screen of your entries (or items carried over), it doesn't mean the income is taxable.  You can see if it's being treated as income by taking a look at your 1040. To do that, go to the panel on the left side of the screen and click on tools, then tax tools.  Then you can scroll down to "Preview my 1040".  The $123 is your calculated state tax, and the $162 is the money that was withheld from your pay during 2025 and will be used in calculating your refund (or tax due). It's your "payment" already toward your state tax.  Your refund is the difference between the two.   [EDITED 03/01/2026 3:09PM PST]
Please clarify if you have tried the various options mentioned in previous posts. Our tech support suggests this may be a browser/computer/installation problem.   @pamcintyre

Thank you.  It is always helpful to know you are not alone when you find a computation error in your tax return!  One thing I wanted to reply to you about.  I found the source of the error on my 1099-DIV.  It was from Vanguard.  I checked my 2024 return and it was fine last year.  Also, I found a statement on-line from Vanguard that they are no longer computing this value, but they do supply instructions for how to do it manually.  I cannot understand why they would not do the calculation themselves, and why the value is filled in with the wrong amount.  Aren't tax returns difficult enough without these sorts of issues?  Just complaining at this point.  Thanks again, Susanne

Once your return is accepted for processing by the IRS and/or state, we have no control over your return.    The IRS issues most refunds within 21 days, assuming that there's no delay and nothing is holding your return. Some returns are subject to an automatic hold when certain credits are claimed.  Also, if the IRS sends the money, your bank may take a few days to make it available in your account.   You should track your refund directly from the IRS Website: where is my refund. These websites have the most accurate and up to date information.

I made $2600 last year with two different editing jobs. I also paid $4900 for a writer mentorship program. Is this deductible as a business expense, and what category would it be?

Thanks for helping me! I amended because after I successfully filed my tax returns, I received a 1099-NEC that increased my income. I added in the information in the 1099-NEC; that was the only change I made. Yes, I ran a review of both returns; the state amended return was accepted but not the federal.

If you are seeing a Smart Check message with regards to an At Risk Operating Loss missing from your Schedule E Worksheet, you may be able to resolve this by entering zero in the provided entry box. You may need to enter zero several times to fully clear the error message screens.   This assumes you had no at-risk operating losses carried over from prior years. If you do have this type of carryover loss(es), enter the amount(s) from the Schedule E Worksheet from your prior year return.
Unfortunately that didn't work for me. I already had it checked that way. Fingers crossed they fix this soon. It's really annoying. I want to finish my taxes!

Generally, to get Form 982 to generate in TurboTax you will follow the steps listed below.  The IRS has very strict rules for determining whether canceled debt is taxable or not. This is a very complex issue and you should consult a tax professional if you are considering filing Form 982 for exclusion of your taxable debt.     The exceptions to determining a canceled debt as taxable include: Debt discharged under Title 11 bankruptcy (including chapters 7, 11 & 13) Canceled debt was on qualified farms and real business property Debt was canceled due to insolvency (to qualify, you must demonstrate your total debt exceeded the Fair Market Value of all of your assets right before the debt was canceled. Use Insolvency Worksheet in IRS Pub 4681 to determine if you were insolvent)   It is best to use a TurboTax Desktop program to complete Form 982. To switch to a desktop  program in TurboTax you can How do I switch from TurboTax Online to TurboTax Desktop?   In your TurboTax Desktop, click on Forms to switch to Forms Mode In your left panel of your TurboTax Screen at the top right above "Forms in my Return" click on the open forms icon. Add Form 1099-C (You may have to delete your Form 1099-C that you entered first before doing this). Enter your Form 1099-C information on Form 1099-C in your right panel of your TurboTax screen In your left panel Click on Canceled Debt Worksheet Complete the section that applies to you. If you are claiming insolvency, you will have to click on the QuickZoom button to complete the statement of insolvency Then select Form 982 in your left panel and complete the sections that apply to you You can then click on Schedule 1 in your left panel to make sure your debt was excluded Click here for How do I report excludable (non-taxable) canceled debt?   Click here for Guide to Debt Cancellation and Your Taxes Please return to Community if you have any additional information or questions and we would be happy to help.

@SusanY1  I hope you can see it. Where it says Taxes, under it says NJ Income tax $123.. That amount is the same as the NJ refund I got last year. That amount is also on my 2024 w-2  in box 17. My 2025 w-2 shows $161.52 in box 17 which was rounded up to $162. I do not know if this correct. Are they treating the $123 as taxable income?because I chose the standard deduction last year and this year.
