We moved my stepfather to an assisted living (AL) home in October 2025 for medical reasons and paid for the first 3 months of his care. We qualify for a deduction as he is in AL due to requiring supervision due to a cognitive impairment. TurboTax won't let me list him as a dependent because he did not live with us for at least 6 months last year, however since he went from his home to AL he technically never lived with us. All the information I am reading says we can deduct the payment for his care at the AL home, but I can't figure out how to enter it in Turbo Tax. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

The $32,000 amount for line 8 of the Social Security Benefits Worksheet is defined by the worksheet itself depending on the filing status being used on the return.  It is not tied to the standard deduction being claimed on the return.     Use the following link to the IRS Form 1040 Instructions to see the IRS version of the Social Security Benefits Worksheet:   Social Security Benefits Worksheet   @user17705808079
Did you enter any capital gains or qualified dividends?   Those calculations are done differently; it does not all come from one tax table.

I filed with my banking app which ended up being more complex and i mistakenly filled out the wrong number on the wrong line. Also they had me file my federal return first then do my state return which didnt work because I need a special NR form that their software does not support and didnt even try the other state. Now my federal is accepted and I need to file my original state returns. So far after 4 days I havent found anyway to do this electronically using software. Seems to be an impossible feat for tax pros.

I am filing a simple trusts return for the first time. The trust distributed all income and that is all accounted for. However, $300 exemption on line 21 is causing line 23 to be a negative (-$300). My understanding is that line 23 can not be a negative, due to the exemption (if everything is distributed, then it should be $0). So do I manually go in and change this to $0. Why would the software not handle that, I don't like manually changing numbers, as it could have implications I am not aware of.   Thanks in advance, VRH
Since she is under age 19 it has no effect on your tax liability in 2025. Be sure to check the box saying that she is disabled next year.
The IRS.gov worksheet and TurboTax formula agree, but the result is different from what is printed on line 16 of 1040-SR

Edited:   You do not enter your standard deduction on that SS worksheet.   You only use $32000 as the amount if you are filing a joint return.   But....you do not even need to mess with that worksheet yourself.   People think it will be simple and it is not.   If you just enter your SSA1099's for each spouse, the software will do a very efficient job of calculating how much--if any--of your SS is taxable.    Go to Federal> Wages & Income>>Retirement Plans and Social Security  (SSA1099 and 1099RRB) to enter your SSA1099.   And....just as a tip---after you enter your SSA1099 the next screen asks if you lived in certain foreign countries in 2025---do not skip past that screen without choosing a correct answer.   The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO.  You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)   The deduction is not on the same line as your standard deduction.  It is shown separately.     2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS SINGLE $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind + $2000) MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind +1600) MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500  (65 or older/legally blind + $1600) HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)     For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra  deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.   (The deduction phases out completely at $175.000 Single or HOH, or $250,000 joint)   The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e.  Turbo Tax automatically includes it. IRS Schedule 1-A https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-dft/f1040s1a--dft.pdf   Need to see it? https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-return/preview-turbotax-online-return-filing/L77WCkvnu_US_en_US?uid=m681fkhr   If you are not getting the senior deduction it is because Your date of birth in MY INFO shows that you were not 65 by the end of 2025 Your income is too high You are filing married filing separately

I receive 5 1099-Int and -Div forms for 2025.  I went through the Import feature of TurboTax.  After I enter the Account # and Document ID for each of the forms, I see this: "Connection complete! Success! We got your tax data. You can now return to TurboTax." After entering the information for the 5th 1099, there is no ability to advance to the next topic.  Clicking on "Continue" takes me back to the "Let's get your forms" from my bank.  The only option is "Skip Import" and the data is not on my forms.  Any thoughts?

If you had Marketplace / ACA insurance at any time in 2025, and you are expecting a Form 1095-A, then you need to report the information from it on your tax return and may not be able to e-file your return without it (the return e-file may be rejected by IRS).   The forms should be on the way if not yet received. However, there are other ways to get the information for your tax return. You can log in to your account at Healthcare.gov or contact your insurance provider directly.  You should receive a Form 1095-A by mid-February if you purchased health insurance through Healthcare.gov or your state's health insurance marketplace.   You need to enter the information from 1095-A into TurboTax, as you won't be able to file Form 8962 and accurately report the Premium Tax Credit without it.   Taxpayers must file an income tax return and include Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit (PTC), if they, their spouse, or anybody they claim as a dependent enrolled in health insurance through a Health Insurance Marketplace (“Marketplace”) and received financial assistance to help cover the cost of their insurance (typically called advance payments of the premium tax credit, or APTC).   Please see this help article for more information about Form 1095-A.    See this TurboTax tips article for more information about the Premium Tax Credit and Form 8962.

I had my taxes prepared on turbotax online, but before filing got an error saying the following:  Form 4562/Depreciation and Amortization Not Ready So I asked an expert if switching to "full service" would fix that. And they said it would, so I switched to full service.  So I essentially was on the phone with the expert and uploaded all of my documents so they could prepare the return, but they got the same error. So then they directed me to download turbotax desktop so I could go in and see the forms 4562 after reentering and rechecking information, and after doing so, I saw that it does have a form 4562 with correct information.  So then, they had me prepare to file that way, but then I got this error when I went to e-file:  Your request was not understood by the e-filing service. - Invalid XML. cvc-complex-type.2.4.a: Invalid content was found starting with element 'legalName'. One of '{filerId}' is expected. Please verify that your application program is up-to-date. Others here in Turbotax help have said the workaround for that problem is to SWITCH BACK to turbo tax online, but when I tried to do so since I had already filled out my taxes IN FULL via BOTH FULL SERVICE AND TURBOTAX ONLINE, the page just spins endlessly between full service and turbotax online, and tehn says that the connection is broken.  I HAVE NOW DONE ALL OF THE WORK NOT ONCE BUT THREE TIMES TO FILE MY TAXES. HOW IN THE HELL AM I SUPPOSED TO TRANSMIT THESE RETURNS?  I HAVE DONE AN ABSOLUTELY SUPERHUMAN AMOUNT OF TROUBLESHOOTING.
