1) Enter the 1095-A information into Turbotax (I'm using Online premium) exactly as on the 1095-A I received. Do this on both our and my sons tax return? Yes.  You will enter it exactly as received on BOTH your return and your sons return.     2) On our return state the policy was shared and put in my sons SS#  and the dates we shared it (Jan - Aug). Pick a sharing percentage (the same for all three amounts) , lets say as an example 75%. When asked 'Do you have at least one dependent on your taxes who is filing a separate return?" answer Yes, CORRECT  and when asked 'What is your child's modified adjusted gross income?' input his income (~$40k). Based on this Turbotax does the math and calculates the excess/under credit NO.  Do not enter your non dependent sons income.  You ONLY enter the income of those who are in your tax family or could be.  Since he cannot be, you do not enter his income.    3) Do exactly the same on my sons tax return except using 25%?   and he answer no when asked 'Do you have at least one dependent on your taxes who is filing a separate return" ?  Correct.   4) Regarding the sharing percentages. I can't find any hard and fast rules on how to calculate this. SOme suggest any combination is OK as long as they total to 100% Seems like 75/25 would be logical in this situation but is that right/OK? Assuming what I've discussed above is correct, I played around with some what-if scenarios with different percentages and for example with a us/son split of 0/100  out total combined refund between  is a crazy high number which seems implausible. 50/50 or 75/25 (which seem more reasonable) seem to yield the best overall numbers which seem plausible.  So is there guidance on what % are reasonable and acceptable.  Whatever amount you agree on is acceptable as long as it adds up to 100%.  So it can be 75/25 or 100/0.  It is entirely up to what you and your son agree on.  A lot of times since the credit was based on the parents income, the parent will claim 100% and the child will claim 0%.

No. You don't need to file an amended return to change the order of the spouses on a joint return.   The order of the names of spouses on a tax return does affect taxes on the return. However, it is highly recommended to keep the same order of the spouses year after year, as changing it may significantly delay the processing of your return.

2025 Turbotax Deluxe calculates the MD State Tax Owed (Line 21) on $81,043 of MD Adj Gross Income as $3,796.  When I use the Maryland state iFile site to file my MD tax (free) instead instead of paying Intuit $20 to file for me, the MD iFile site calculates the MD tax owed as $3,797.  Only a $1 difference but I did the calculation using the tables and I agree with the MD ifile site's calculation.

This charitable contribution is a Qualified Charitable Contribution (QCD)   While entering your form 1099-R, if you have entered a birth date which makes you older than 70 1/2 in the tax year, TurboTax will ask you if any portion of your distribution was transferred to charity. Answer Yes to that question and you can then enter the amount transferred to charity.   The code in box 7 of form 1099-R must be 7 and the box IRA/SEP/SIMPLE must be checked.   TurboTax will then reduce the taxable amount by the amount transferred to charity.

Thank you!  This was so frustrating, and the TT desktop software was useless.  Why it doesn't do the calculation (all the data is there!) for you and at least suggest checking one or the other based on which one is advantageous is beyond me!  It's buried deep in the worksheet labyrinth and the software simply takes last year's selection and copies it over, didn't even bring it up in the interview in step by step.  Just assumed my tax situation is unchanged year to year.  Thank you again for saving me the $60 to have a TT 'expert' uncover the archaic  programming oversight in their software.

TurboTax needs to know the value of all your IRA accounts at year end when you take a distribution or convert part of your IRA to a Roth IRA. This is in order to calculate the basis of the distributed or converted part by applying the pro rata rule.   When your Traditional IRA has basis (from the nondeductible contributions) as reported on form 8606, you have to apply a prorated amount of basis to the distributed or converted amount.   Please read this IRS document for more information.
