Add the cost of the improvements to your basis (inherited generally would be FMV on the date of death) and enter that figure into the program.

It is working for most everyone else. Which TurboTax program are using using, Online or Desktop?  If desktop which OS, Windows or Mac, and which edition, Deluxe, Premier or Home & Business?   What happens when you click the start button?  How are you requesting entry of the 1099-R?  Did you select Type it in myself?
It says no entries are needed for this form and will not let me override.

TurboTax does not carryforward NOLs. You need to enter the NOL manually.

Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?”  If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet.  You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.   Since the IRS will not begin to accept/reject returns until January 26, you are going to be waiting in “pending” for awhile.  Your return is sitting on a server, where you cannot fix  it or get it back.   You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.   If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.   Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.     If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.     Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed   The Form 1040X you need becomes available in late February,  But wait until your return has been processed.

Do you mean your only income is Social Security?  Social Security benefits and "SSI" are not the same thing.  We need clarity when you are entering information about a tax return.   WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS AND SSI? https://www.ssa.gov/ssi/text-over-ussi.htm   If Social Security benefits were your only income you are not even required to file a tax return unless you had tax withheld from it, or if you have a 1095A for marketplace health insurance.    Or did you have other income in addition to the SS?  Entering certain other income or information into the program may have triggered an upgrade to a paid version of the software.

SOLUTION: From April 2025     To All Concerned,   I just spoke with Customer Service at Intuit TurboTax and the solution is as follows:   1) Uninstall Turbotax 2024 from the Installed Apps Section of Windows 10/11.   2) Download the latest TurboTax setup file (for your version) from Turbotax.   Link: https://turbotax.intuit.ca/tax/software/download   3) Backup your TurboTax file folder as a precaution, but they should be unaffected by the reinstallation.   4) Install after downloading and once installed all should be good again.   You're welcome.   Regards,   NKoury     PS: Product code re-entry should not be required. Re-enter only if requested.   ‎April 3, 2025 11:23 AM

Q. If books and materials were included in box 1 on 1098-T, do we still enter them separate under required books and materials? A. No.  That would be duplication.   Q. At 'required books and materials from the school' line  would that just be for what we paid out of pocket? A. Yes.  Or more accurately, only the books and materials not already included in box 1 of the 1098-T.
