Since I am retired and do not have any W-2 income, I would have to make a phony W-2 and remove all my retirement income, all my dividends, and all my social security income. Seems like a lot of work just to get a checkmark that probably doesn't mean anything except cause a question of why there is no checkmark. You would think Turbotax would have a simple question to be marked in the personal info section. I notice that there is a question in the personal info concerning being blind, passed away during the year, etc. where you can check that "none of the above" apply , but it does not stay checked????

If you are entering the amount deducted from Social Security for Medicare in the Social Security Income section, you can subtract the amount reimbursed and just enter the net amount you paid.    Amounts deducted from Social Security payments for Medicare premiums are clearly identified on the Form SSA-1099 and are automatically transferred to Schedule A as a medical expense if entered in TurboTax, so you don't need to enter them separately in Medical Expenses.   See this TurboTax blog article for more information about claiming medical insurance expenses as a deduction.

The value is based on what a wiling buyer would pay a willing seller for the item. The best way to determine the value of donations you made, is to get a receipt when you make the donations.  If you did not get a receipt you can use a valuation chart such as one from the Goodwill or Salvation Army.  If you use these guides, be sure to print out the guide you used so you have a record of how you came up with your number.  It is also a good idea to take a picture of your donations and keep it with your tax return for your record and proof.  Another method you could use is looking up the prices that people are selling similar items for on places like eBay or Marketplace or other popular resale/yard sale sites. If the non cash donations were worth more than $500, you DO need a receipt from the charitable organization you donated to.  You would then be able to use this for the value.   If the donations were worth more than $5,000 you need an appraisal for the value of the item.  The appraisal is then what you would use for the value.  Your charitable donations are only deductible as itemized expenses.  Itemized expenses include mortgage interest, gambling losses up to 90% or winnings whichever is less,  charitable contributions, state and local taxes up to $10,000, medical expenses in excess of 7.5% of your AGI and casualty and losses in excess of 10% of you AGI with the first $100 not counting towards the loss.  Your health insurance and all medical expenses are only deductible for the amount that is over 7.5% of your AGI.  This means if your AGI is $50,000, then the amount that is over $3,750 is deductible.     Then your total itemized expenses would need to be greater than your standard deduction below in order to benefit from your expenses.    The 2024 Standard Deductions are as follows: Married Filing Joint (MFJ)              $31,500 Married Filing Separate (MFS)      $15,750 Head of Household (HOH)             $23,675  Single                                                 $15,750                                 Blind or over 65 and MFJ or MFS add $1,600 Single or HOH if blind or over 65 add $2.000

There is an exception to the early withdrawal tax penalty (from a 401(K) account) for a birth of a child. The amount withdrawn can be as much 5,000 and must be made within one year of the child's birth.   Concerning your question, do you mean 5,000 or 500? Do you mean you took 2,000 but only 500 at the time the child was born? Was this all done/reported in tax year 2025 or 2024? Or was some money withdrawn in 2024 and some withdrawn in 2025 and you received a 1099 for BOTH years??

I completely agree!  I've been a TurboTax user for well over 20 years, dating back to when TaxCut was sold to H&R Block and TurboTax emerged as the leading individual software package.  It has generally worked well for me; but this year has been a disappointment.  If TurboTax can't publish their "new, improved" subroutine for estimating noncash charitable contributions, then PLEASE just bring back It's Deductible!  TurboTax seems to have lots of money to spend on expensive advertising (anyone watch the NFL playoffs?), but can't seem to allocate resources to keep up with tax law changes and/or update their software for simple things like noncash charitable contributions!

Are you still having problems with this?   It could be that something got stuck. You can try these things:   Log Out Completely: Before doing anything else, click Sign Out in the TurboTax menu. Clear Cache and Cookies: This removes old, "corrupted" data that might be confusing the website. Use an Incognito (Private) Window: This is the most effective "quick fix" because it launches the browser without any saved history or extensions (like AdBlockers) that often interfere with tax forms. Check Pop-up Blockers: TurboTax often opens forms (like the 1099 PDF) or payment windows in a separate pop-up. Look at the right side of your address bar for a small icon with a "red X"—click it and select "Always allow pop-ups from Intuit." Restart the Browser: Close all open windows of your browser entirely and then reopen it.   Most TurboTax errors happen because the browser is trying to use an old "session" from a previous visit. By clearing the cache or using Incognito mode, you force the browser to establish a brand-new, secure connection with the Intuit servers.
