If you're filing a 709, each year stands on its own in terms of the annual exclusion.    If you gave your son the property in one tax year, then you would (or did) file a 709 or that year based on the FMV of the property as of the date of the transfer. If you then paid for improvements on the property in a later year, you would simply calculate the cost of those improvements and file a 709 based on that cost.

Did Turbo Tax take the fees out of your bank account?  Then you must have selected to have the fees deducted from your refund but the IRS is taking too long to send your refund.     If the IRS is taking too long to send your refund they will ask you to pay the fees, see step 3 under What happens if the IRS reduces my refund...... https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/payments/help/what-if-my-federal-refund-isn-t-enough-to-cover-my-turbotax-fees/00/26313 If you don't pay they will automatically debit your bank account. Then when the IRS does send your refund they won't take the fees out again. The information we have was that e-filing would close at midnight on 10-31.   Today is November 1, so you will need to file your tax return by mail.     When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

No it's the other way around.  You can have the fees deducted from a federal refund if your refund is big enough to cover the fees  plus the $40 or 45 Pay with Refund service charge.

What?   What made you think your income tax refund would reduce your TurboTax fees?  It has never worked that way.   Your fee for using TurboTax is based on which version of the software you use to prepare your return; the fees are not determined by the amount of your refund or by whether you owe federal or state tax due.

Agree with all the comments about being forced to W11. Not me either. H & R Block or back to pen and paper.  Yeah, I still know how. Sad, Intuit!

There are no more extensions.    An extension for a 2024 return had to be requested by April 15, 2025, and that gave you until October 15 to file your return.   If you have not filed yet, your return is now just late.   If you do not owe or are getting a refund there is no penalty for filing after the deadline.    If you owe tax due, it is owed with late filing penalties and interest.    E-filing is closed, so you will need to file by mail.
