When you entered your dependents in MY INFO, it asked if the dependent paid for over half their own support.  Did you say NO?   It did not ask if you paid over half---it asked if the dependent paid over half.  You can click each dependent's name in MY INFO, go back through those questions and correct your answers.   It is a weird question that causes trouble for folks--be careful how you answer it.

I am just starting my taxes and putting in my information and it is telling me I have to file single because while I have dependents I don't pay more than 50% of my expenses...which isn't true?

If I get a W2 with an amount in Box 12, Code II (medicaid waiver payments), but no amount in line 1, how is that entered and still be able to efile?  I know that I don't have to enter it if I don't have any other W2s, but we do have 1 W2 with regular income that already qualifies us for the EITC, so I do not need this W2 for that EITC as I saw in the other questions, but at the same time, if I just don't turn this W2 in at all to the IRS, wouldn't our tax return with the other W2 be red flagged by the IRS due to them getting a copy of this other W2 that we did not put with the one we are turning in?  I don't mind turning this in because we do get a tax refund with the other normal W2 that we have, but I want to make sure I do this correctly and still get to e-file because if I mail this in, it takes a lot longer for it to get processed, so I definitely want to e-file but also don't want to do anything wrong to cause our tax return to be red flagged if that makes sense?  And we always use turbotax because it is pretty much mostly self-explaining on how to do our own taxes and not have to pay someone a lot of money to do them with this different odd situation.

I have a similar situation to the above contributor, however, I am not self employed.  I retired on Dec 31, 2025 and my company is paying me some income in January 2026 for hours worked in 2025. Let's just say, my YTD gross earnings at the end of January will be $20,000. So, I will get a W-2 for 2026.   I am married filing jointly and over 50 years old.  I believe I can contribute $8600 for both me and my wife ($17,200 total) into each of our Roth's for 2026.  Is this true? Thank you!

It doesn't matter what you enter for the broker's name. It doesn't go on your tax return. It's just something that TurboTax uses to identify multiple copies of the Capital Asset Sales Worksheet. The worksheet is an internal form for TurboTax. It's not part of your tax return. The details of the calculation of basis also do not go on your tax return. Only the one number for basis actually appears on your tax return. There is no place on the tax return to show the details.

So instead of 10000, the maximum amount a person could deduct should be 6000.00      Yes, it reduces the deduction by $200 for each $1000 over $100,000.   However, did you pay $10,000 or more in loan interest?  It reduces the DEDUCTION, not the maximum cap.  With $120,000 of income, your deduction is lowered by $4,000.  If you paid $4,000 or less of interest, your deduction will be $0.
