It's the Federal return that is limited to 1. With Online TurboTax you can prepare and efile 1 Federal return per account and up to 5 state returns per account. So you will NOT be blocked from filing a state return. In fact, Online TurboTax loves state returns because they charge a fee for each one; i.e., there is a preparation fee for the Federal return and a preparation fee for any state return. There is no efiling fee in Online TurboTax, however; efile is included. It depends on what the payment is for. If it is for lost wages, it should have been reported on a W-2. You don't need to pay 15% self-employment tax, but you do need to pay 7.65% social security using a form 8919.
A payment for physical injury is not taxable at all. There are a couple of ways to deal with the 1099-MISC on your tax return, that are more or less correct, depending on how you are filing.
It might be a settlement because they invested your 401k in an illegal way, and this is compensation for lost income in the 401k. There are special rules for that situation that I don't know off the top of my head.
Other payments will be taxable as simple miscellaneous income, just list the 1099-MISC as taxable income. That might include payment for mileage that the employer should have paid, or if the employer made you buy your own uniforms and is now reimbursing you.
Without more details, we really can't say how this payment should be taxed.

How old were the children at the end of 2024? If they were over 16 at the end of the year they do not qualify for the $2,000 child tax credit. They only qualify for the $500 credit for other dependents.
If the children were under 17 at the end of the year and you are only getting the $500 credit, check the birth dates that you entered for the children.

Why do you think your taxable income should be zero? Here's what I get from the figures that you gave.
Unspecified income $27,224 Long-term capital gain 9,000 Short-term capital loss - 400 -------- Adjusted Gross Income $35,824 Standard deduction (MFJ) - 29,200 -------- Taxable Income $ 6,624
From the information you provided, your taxable income should be about $6,624. The question we might ask is why TurboTax calculated it as only $4,707. There may be some other facts that you have omitted.
Nevertheless, again based on the information you presented, your income tax should be zero, so it's not clear why you have to pay $1,500. Again, there may be some facts that you have omitted. You might owe some other taxes, even if you don't owe any income tax.
You didn't say what types of income are included in the $27,224. If some of it is self-employment you probably owe self-employment tax, even if you don't owe any income tax. Do you have a Form 1095-A for health insurance from the Marketplace ("Obamacare")? If so, you might have to repay some of the advance premium tax credit that you received during the year. These would appear as "other taxes" on Form 1040 line 23. The details of any other taxes would be on Schedule 2.
What line of Form 1040 is the $1,500 on? What are the exact amounts on Form 1040 lines 16, 23, 24, 33, and 37?
See the following FAQ for instructions to view your Form 1040 in TurboTax Online. "Preview my 1040" will also show you Schedules 1, 2, and 3.
How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?
If you have further questions, please provide exact amounts and specific form and line numbers.

Well it's kinda complicated due to every situation being different, there is a timeframe they have to do the audit but it is sometimes a long process. They audit your taxes not your check so they will probably want more verification that what you told them is true. It could also be if you made any mistakes unintentional. They will contact you sending more info regarding that. Likely you will not see your check until after the audit has been completed and then it will still take a little time to get it possibly you will get a check for interest because I did.

It didn’t ask or tell me I needed to use Cloud or OneDrive or sign into anything online. I’ve never set up a Microsoft account.

Hi @mesquitebean That's correct, it is a "Do Not File/Form Not Final" watermark. This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you for the detailed answer and for your time.

Files on your machine get synced, or uploaded, to the cloud via OneDrive and you can turn off OneDrive or even uninstall it. I have Windows 11 on 3 machines and none of them have uploaded files (e.g., Word docs, Excel spreadsheets, et al) to the cloud.

When did you file? Turbo Tax Online is only good for 2024 returns since last November 2024. Did you fill out your 2023 return in the 2024 Online version? Was your “2023 return” Accepted? Didn’t it ask you for the 2023 AGI to efile? If you filed 2023 using the 2024 online program and forms and the IRS accepted it you will need to amend the “2024” wrong return that was suppose to be 2023 and change it around to be actually for 2024. Hope that’s clear. Then you still need to file a 2023 return. it's too, late to start a 2023 or prior online return or use the mobile app, either on Turbo Tax or the IRS. And too late to efile 2023. To do a prior year return you have to buy the Desktop program here, https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products You will need a full Windows or Mac to install it on. If you have a simple return and want to file for free you can fill out the forms by hand. Here are some basic forms..... Here is the 2023 1040 return https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040--2023.pdf or if you want bigger type use 1040SR for Seniors, https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s--2023.pdf 2023 1040 Instructions https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040gi--2023.pdf 2023 EIC and Tax Tables https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/i1040tt--2023.pdf Schedules 1-3 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s1--2023.pdf https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s2--2023.pdf https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-prior/f1040s3--2023.pdf Don’t forget your state. And you will have to print and mail your returns. So be sure to attach copies of your W2s and any 1099s that have withholding on them. You have to mail federal and state in separate envelopes because they go to different places. Get a tracking number from the post office when you mail them for proof of filing.

Why doesn't TurboTax include my federal return after my state return when I ask it to SAVE my return as a PDF file? Up to 2023 tax year, it would, but for the 2024 tax year, it's not! Specifically, up to 2023, it would include my federal return (1), then my state return (2), then a second copy of my federal return (3). Now for 2024, it excludes (3). Thank you.

This might be good news for some, but for me, the whole reason I don't want Windows 11 on my machine is that I don't want my information on the cloud. I have the option to "Enroll in Extended Security Updates..." but they will force you to make a Microsoft account. It is still unresolved whether TurboTax will work on Windows 10 even with Extended updates.

Form 2210 is only generated if one of the exceptions in Part II applies, when filing if you go thru Other Tax Situations > Underpayment Penalty that's where that happens otherwise you would file with the penalty on Line 38 of Form 1040 and no Form 2210 is filed. IRS recalculates it independently based on information in their system - differences in prior year AGI or Estimated Tax payments for example could then trigger a different penalty result. For line 8 follow the instructions for Form 2210 or provide more details here if still stuck and someone may be able to help further. But for most people it's 100% of their 2024 tax liability (generally line 22 on Form 1040 for most people, but follow instructions if you had stuff on Schedule 2 or refundable tax credits), or 110% of that amount if your 2024 AGI was > 150k or 75k if married filing separately. If you are using TT desktop you can go back to your return and in Forms mode double click on Line 38 then again in the 1040 worksheet and it will show Form 2210 generated by Turbo that did not need to be filed. But that may not have the correct info if IRS determined you owe a different penalty amount. You can also check your transcript and payment details under your account at irs.gov to see why there may have been a difference in the calculations.
