@KrisD15, My Mom received a letter in November 2025 from SSA saying that she would receive a payment because they owed money to a person previously entitled who is now deceased. My Dad passed in 2024. I’m not referring to the $255 death benefit. My Mom received her own 2025 SSA-1099. Then she received an O/A/O SSA-1099 with her SSN in Box 2. My Dad’s SSN only shows up in Box 8 to be used as a Claim Number if contacting SSA. The dollar amount in Box 5 of the O/A/O 1099, matches the dollar amount from the letter my Mom received. I just need to know if the SSA-1099 O/A/O, Box 5 (Net Benefit) is considered a lump sum payment in TT? Thank you to anyone able to assist me.

I am having a major issue with form 1116 in Turbo Tax Online. I have foreign income over the $600 limit of foreign taxes I want a credit for. I have foreign income from an RIC and 20 foreign countries. I am only able to input 1 item of the 21 when I go to the Foreign Tax Credit section. The instructions say to go to the credits & deductions and enter to Take a Credit which I did. I then entered the foreign income and answered the questions. But instead of allowing me to enter another country by returning to the new country entry page it makes me select done. I can't add any more countries. What is going on? This is a major glitch in the program. From what I can gather it has been an ongoing issue since at least 2020! How can I finish my taxes if I can't get past this issue? Please help!

Here's a link to download the correct software. https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/2024/ Our e-filing window for non-corporate and non-partnership returns goes from January to mid-October of the calendar year that immediately follows the tax year.

For depreciation, you won't add it to the cost of the original rental property, you'll create a new asset. This does increase the cost basis of the rental, but you need to keep separate assets because they were placed in service at different times. Here is how to add the roof: Go to Rental property (Schedule E):
Navigate to Federal > Income > Rental Properties and Royalties > Choose pencil icon next to the rental > Choose pencil next to "Rental Property" Under Assets heading
Now you'll see a list of depreciable assets already in service, select "Add"
Add details about the roof selecting "Rental real estate property as the asset category.

Thanks for the explanation. It’s a yes or no question, so saying “no” to skip the question is technically a lie. The question is worded in a way that asks if you’ve ever received it. It doesn’t specify when. So maybe revising the question to something like, “In the 2025 tax year, did you receive the 2021 tax rebate?” would be helpful. There are Reddit threads on how confusing this is. If you could pass this along, that would be great! @Leticia

There are different steps to follow to use a tax file (.tax) versus a PDF. Your Mac should be able to convert the 2024 return in either format for use with the 2025 Mac program. Please see this article, and this one for PDF.
I have also found that even though the 2024 return doesn't show in the window that TurboTax provides for you to select from, if it's on the Mac, you can open a Finder window, select it there and then copy it to the TurboTax window.

@ MelindaS1 Hi! Much of the instructions above is for the Canadian version of TurboTax. US TurboTax does not use that method to get to the Print Center. And in the desktop software steps you mentioned above, Netfile is a Canadian feature. I believe they were taken from a Canadian FAQ rather than a USA FAQ.

I'm having the same issue and it does not seem complicated. I've filed my taxes with TurboTax since 2007, but no returns are available for years prior to 2018. I have never received a message from turbotax or intuit saying that my old returns were being deleted or would become unavailable, and so I would like to know how to access my returns prior to 2018.

If your Form 1040 is showing the rollover amount in Line 4a and 0 tax in Line 4b, but is still impacting your ability to claim your dependent due to the income, you will need to revisit the interview section to ensure you answered the questions correctly, especially ensuring you answer, "Yes" when asked, "Did you move this money to another retirement account...?"
To revisit the interview section, do the following:
Click on Step-by-Step at the top right corner (if currently in Forms Mode)
Go to Wages & Income, then Retirement Plans and Social Security
Click on IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)
Select the pencil to the right of your 1099-R entry
Carefully answer each of the interview questions
After completing the entries, check Line 11 (Adjusted Gross Income) of your Form 1040
If Line 11 includes the rollover amount, there is still a calculation error and you will need to delete and manually re-enter the Form 1099-R
Since you are using the Desktop version, go to Forms Mode and click on the Form 1099-R, then select Delete Form at the bottom left of the screen.
Once deleted, go back to Wages & Income, Retirement Plans and Social Security, to re-enter the 1099-R.

I would like to take a deeper look at this. However, I need a diagnostic file which is a copy of your tax return that has all of your personal information removed. You can send one to us by following the directions below:
TurboTax Online:
Sign into your online account.
Locate the Tax Tools on the left-hand side of the screen.
A drop-down will appear. Select Tools
On the pop-up screen, click on “Share my file with agent.”
This will generate a message that a diagnostic file gets sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number that was generated in the response.
TurboTax Desktop/Download Versions:
Open your return.
Click the Online tab in the black bar across the top of TurboTax and select “Send Tax File to Agent” *
This will generate a message that a diagnostic copy will be created. Click on OK and the tax file will be sanitized and transmitted to us.
Please provide the Token Number (including the dash) that was generated in the response.
*(If using a MAC, go to the menu at the top of the screen, select Help, then, “Send Tax File to Agent”)

I used the search option and it sent me to the Federal estimated tax form (which I also make yearly and have entered the correct amount there).
