@pk , Thank you for your reply. There is just a few things I want to clarify.   1) You said: "By staying say 20 days in 2026, you are under the 'at least 31 days in the current year' -- for 2026 filing. All you are trying to do is not have to have dual status and its filing requirements."   Just to clarify, in this case I would not have dual status. Correct? Sorry, I just want to be 100% sure about these things.   2) About the "sourcing", you said: "IRS generally follows the principle of 'sourcing' of income is where the work is actually performed. So if you do remote work , then the income is usually sourced to the country where the actual work was performed."   But the university will generate the W2 form informing the total amount they paid me during the three months, even if I go and work remotely February and March. Right? So, how would I inform that part of this income is sourced to Brazil?   3) About the last thing you said: "Also because of NRA status ( your spouse is on a dependent visa ), you each have to file a separate return attached to the original MFJ 1040."   The original MFJ 1040 you mentioned is the one we will be filing in 2026 (for the calendar year of 2025)? I am asking because for the calendar year of 2026, either having dual status or only non-resident status, I have read that it is not possible to file as MFJ and thus I will have to file as married filing separately and my wife would file the 8843 form, since she does not have any income. So, you are saying she would need to attache our 1040 referent to the calendar year of 2025? I could not understand this part of your explanation very well, sorry.   Nice to know you lived in Brazil. I hope you enjoyed your stay there!   Best regards, Felipe

@rmoreno716    But get it done ASAP...since the Online software will likely shut down for 2024 taxes sometime in November....could even be next week or two.   After it shuts down for 2024, your file will be locked down for a week or so as all files are archived.....even unfinished ones, and those could only be continued using the desktop software.   (I do wonder when the actual shutdown/archiving date is expected to be this year)

Are you entering self employment contractor  income on Schedule C and need to enter the business code?   Schedule C line B Business Code is a 6 digit number for your activity.  Here are the IRS instructions for Schedule C.  Business codes start on page 19.   If you can't find a code that applies, you can enter 999999. http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040sc.pdf   See the FAQ on Business Codes, https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/business/help/what-is-the-business-code-used-for/00/25672

@wi-sa-hodgson ,   what is important is not how you are  paid ( weekly, bi-weekly, check, direct deposit etc. ) but are you an employee or a contractor ( contractor includes daily labor ).  In case of employee you get a W-2, FICA and taxes are withheld. For a contractor etc. you get a 1099-NEC  ( Non-Employee Compensation), you pay the full FICA  -- called SECA at 15.3% of gross essentially, pay estimated federal and state taxes  quarterly. Given the above , please tell me  more    I will circle back once I hear from you -- yes ?

I imagine it might be possible to allow that at some future year, but it would only happen after the customer pays for the software.  But then again, Online users can already create PDFs at any stage of preparation after they pay for the software....granted, there isn't any actual actions they can take in the forms that way.

@FCarv , the December end date was just for clean cut.  By staying  say 20 days in 2026, you are under the "at least 31 days in the current year -- for 2026 filing.  All you are trying to do is not have to have dual status and its filing requirements.  But if that is not possible then so be it. IRS generally follows  the principle of "sourcing " of income is where the work is actually performed.  So if you do remote work  , then the income is usually  sourced to the country where the actual work was performed. Yes , in case of zero US sourced income as an NRA for the  latter part of the year, you will have to file by mail,  1040 showing the US world income as a resident, 1040-NR showing  any US sourced income ( even if zero), Write across the top of 1040 and 1040-NR   " DUAL STATUS FILER", cannot use  standard deduction. Also because of NRA  status ( your spouse is on a dependent visa ), you each have to file a separate return attached to the original MFJ 1040.  This is just to cover all the bases , especially since you are not going to be here to respond to any queries  promptly.   I lived in alphaville in Sao Paulo  for three years working for Autolatina. Is there more I can do for you ? chao

No, that is one of the main differences between Online and Desktop.   You can transfer from this year’s Desktop tax return into the Online version next year.  So be sure to have the .tax2024 file on your computer.      Then next year….You will notice several differences and not like the online version.  It has less features and no Forms Mode.  You can only do 1 return per account.   Although you can use the same email address for 5 separate accounts. Your return is only saved online so be sure to save both the .tax2025 data file and the pdf file to your computer when you are done.

I recently bought a new computer and just installed (I believe) TurboTax 2024 software. When I click on the TurboTax 2024 icon that's now on my screen, it brings me to a page with a disabled button saying, "Activate TurboTax." That same screen also provides two options to proceed from there - either to click on a second button shown under the words "This account has a license code," with that button itself also showing the last four digits of my original license code from my earlier download to my old computer and the text "1/5 Active," as well as a third button saying, "Have another license code? Add another code."   I should note here that the last four digits of the license code shown on the second button do actually correspond to my original license code. However, when I click on it and then click on the now-enabled "Activate TurboTax" button, I get a warning that says, "This license code is already linked to another account." On the other hand, it's useless for me to click on the third button ("Add another code") since I do not have any other code to add.   Thanks to anyone who can tell me what I need to do at this point to Activate my 2024 TurboTax on my new computer so that I can start using it.

@rmoreno716  If you DO decide to file by mail, remember to sign and date it.  When mailing, it's recommended to use a method that has tracking.   If you are getting a Federal refund, it will take about 4 weeks for a mailed return just to show up in the IRS "Where's My Refund" tool. https://www.irs.gov/wheres-my-refund   If you file the Federal return by printing and mailing, and if you also have a state return, the state return will also have to be filed by mail to the state tax agency.

@ rmoreno716   asked:  "I am using the online version but will be printing and mailing a hard copy to IRS. If I print the tax return and notice a need for corrections will I be able to do so?  Will I be able to make corrections to a completed/printed tax return if it has not been filed yet?"   EDIT NOTE 11/01/2025 at 1:14 AM Pacific While the information below that  I originally posted yesterday afternoon was correct through midnight October 31, 2025, as of November 1, it is no longer possible to efile a 2024 return, and it looks like 2024 Online TurboTax has already shut down for the season (at least for me.)     If your Online TurboTax has shut down after midnight October 31, and if you need to still work on your return, you'll have to use 2024 desktop software.  If you've already paid for Online TurboTax, then TurboTax Support should furnish you the software.   Log into Online TurboTax, and you'll probably get a message saying to download your *.tax2024 data file using the link it provides so you can open it in the desktop software.   Here's how to contact TurboTax Support, if needed to get a download of the software if you've already paid or need additional assistance. https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/contact **************************************************************   Original answer from October 31, 2025:   Yes, if you haven't actually filed yet (i.e., haven't efiled or actually mailed a copy), and if you print a copy and notice an error, you can go back into the interview and correct something before actually filing.    If you log in, and TurboTax thinks you were finished so the interview is closed, here's how to open it back up.  On the Tax Home page look for a link "Add a State."   That doesn't really add one, but opens the return interview back up.   Why are you filing by printing, signing, dating, and mailing a return instead of efiling?   If you are having a problem when efiling, folks in this forum might be able to help you so you can efile.   A paper return can take weeks to process.     Did you try to efile, but got a rejection error code and message?   If so, what is the rejection code and message?

The fee for using online TurboTax is the same whether you file by e-filing or by mailing it in an envelope.   If you have already paid and have a fully prepared return ready to file, TT is not going to refund your fee, because you can either fix the reason for the rejection or you can print, sign and date the return and file it by mail.       You received an email that we cannot see that tells you why your tax return was rejected.   Some rejected returns can be fixed and re-filed.  Some have “un-fixable” reasons for the rejection and have to be mailed instead.    What is the rejection code or rejection message?     If it was rejected for AGI—-your 2023 AGI might not be in the IRS system if you filed late.   Try using zero instead.   If filing with zero is rejected then file again but select the option that you did not file last year.  The IRS does not see that question and it will allow you to e-file with no AGI question.     https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/agi/help/where-do-i-correct-my-agi-in-turbotax-online/00/26311   If that does not work and you still cannot e-file, then print, sign, and mail your tax return.
Will I be able to make corrections to a completed/printed tax return if it has not been filed yet?
