Dear Turbotax,      3/6/26 How to opt out audit defense?
Line 31 on Form 5695 is populating in my test return.  The amount comes from Lines A, B and C right above.  You could delete the form and step through the interview again to let it repopulate.    ... See more...

It won’t make me change city now as I filed already
Thanks for your reply. Got through Step 1, but don't know how to check it by accessing the 1040 form on Turbotax online version.

You either need to claim your son as a dependent or you need to file a tax return for him where he will have to pay back the subsidies that he received because he is below the federal poverty level.     You can't enter the 1095-A on your tax return because your son's social security number isn't on your tax return.
If your return was rejected for the VIN number, in FORMS mode, open Form 8936 and check the box at the top certifying that 'the VIN number is correct.   @Rickm7
Si j'ai débuté en mode formulaire au lieu de Easy Steps est-ce que je suis en mesure d'appliquer le contournement ? Merci de m'éclairer

The window company can't separate the cost by window and door less the labor cost for the eligible home energy-efficient improvement credit. I have one total for windows and one total for doors. TurboTax wants me to enter it by most expensive window and door, then 2nd most expensive window and door, 3rd most expensive window and door, then all other door and windows. How do I enter just the total doors and total windows?

You don't want to omit the 1098-t that is what qualifies you for any education credits, AOC or LLC in TT.  You want to omit the 1099q income, assuming you know you have educational expenses that offset it fully in excess of whatever expenses you require to get the credit your claiming.   If you not eligible for either education credit and you know expenses offset fully you can omit both the 1098t and the 1099q from your return. In my personal situation I was not eligible for the AOC or LLC credit because my income phased me out fully, but TT still assigned the full amount I reported from my 1098t in conjunction with that credit (line 18 on student info wks), which left some of the 1099q income i reported not fully offset by expenses i entered.  In my situation i set that credit used amount to 0 to get it to correctly offset the income.  But if you want TT to assess your eligibility for the credits you need to enter that 1098t.

@DocNyr wrote:  350days in 2025 doing a research sabbatical   Obviously I don't know the details of your situation, but at first glance, I would question that if your "Tax Home" and your "Abode" were in the foreign country during your "sabbatical".  That is a requirement to qualify for the Foreign Earned Income Exclusion.

I receive the following error while running error check. "Check This Entry         Form 1116 (Copy 1) : Line 33 should be blank."   However when I go to forms - this line is in fact blank.   However line 35 is highlighted in yellow and is in red.  Further there is a comment on line 35 saying "DO NOT FILE FORM (SEE HELP)"   I do not see a method to delete the form which appears to be suggested in some of the help forums.   Please advise what I should do.

@Vanessa A wrote: At this point, many people are having their returns with form 5695 rejected so it may or may not be related, but it has been sent up the chain to be fixed.     It has absolutely nothing to do with the rejection problems, it is purely a math error by TurboTax.   Line 19g says to multiple Line 19f by 30% and the screenshot shows that TurboTax is not doing that.  Is TurboTax really that bad at math?

The Education Expenses and Scholarships section (1098-T) is still the place to enter taxable PhD stipends. It has changed a little this year, but you are still able to enter scholarship amounts.   At the scholarship screen, enter the amount of the grant. When asked if any was used for room and board, answer yes. Then enter the amount you want to be taxable (usually all of it), in the pop up box. R&B are not "qualified educational  expenses".  So, this is how you tell TT that it is taxable. Note the wording at that screen “or other expenses”. You didn’t have to literally use the scholarship for R&B.  This will put it on line 8r of Schedule 1 (this line was added in 2022).   Scholarships are a hybrid between earned and unearned income. It is earned income for purposes of the $15,750 filing requirement (2025) and the dependent standard deduction calculation (earned income + $450).  It is not earned income for the kiddie tax and other purposes (e.g. EIC).  For grad students and post grad fellows, scholarship, stipend and fellowship income is earned income ("compensation") for IRA contributions.
Suzy, I have not received a private message from you in regards to anything.   Still waiting while my email box fills up with canned answers saying my voice is heard!  [email address removed]

Are unexpected capital gains subject to penalty?   Yes, they are, unfortunately, if you didn't have sufficient withholding or pay estimated tax during the tax year.    There is a safe harbor, though, if your total withholding/tax credits cover 90% of your 2025 tax or 100% of your 2024 tax (110% If your 2024 AGI was over $150k).
