Items for volunteer work qualify as cash donations. If you paid for classes or a uniform, those are cash items. I am not sure what you mean by  expenses for phone. See Publication 526, Charitable Contributions.  You aren't claiming a deduction for using your phone, maybe donating new or used?   Contributions You Can't Deduct There are some contributions you can't deduct and others you can deduct only in part. You can't deduct as a charitable contribution: 1. A contribution to a specific individual, 2. A contribution to a nonqualified organization, 3. The part of a contribution from which you receive or expect to receive a benefit, 4. The value of your time or services, 5. Your personal expenses, 6. Generally, a qualified charitable distribution from an individual retirement arrangement (IRA), (see Qualified Charitable Distributions, later.) 7. Appraisal fees, 8. Certain contributions to donor-advised funds, 9. Certain contributions of partial interests in property, or 10. Certain conservation contributions by pass-through entities. See Instructions for Form 8283 for more information.

If you are using TurboTax Desktop, you can switch to forms mode in the upper right corner and verify the income being taxed by each state.     @Super_D
The 2 responses in this thread give opposite advice about whether to file the resident (Oregon) or non-resident (California) return first. Which is it?

Hi @BrittanyS ,   Thanks for the info. The problem is gone, but now I'm concerned on whether or not our wages are being taxed properly for each state. As stated, all of my wages come from New Jersey and I live in New Jersey. As for my wife, she lives and works in New York. As it stands, TurboTax is saying that we owe taxes to New Jersey, but are receiving a refund from New York. How can I be sure that we're not being taxed twice for both of our wages across both states?

There's another way to resolve without override but it is not ideal or fully correct, so the override is better.  In the MA state return if you go to "Other Interest and Dividends to Exclude", you can enter the amount there (you then need to enter a custom description). This will then appear on the state Exclusion Form on Line 8  "Other" along with your description (but not in box 4). Not sure if this triggers some kind of extra check by the MA DOR because it is non-standard. You of course also have to not check the special handling in the Federal 1099-DIV  so it is not excluded twice.  Actually you need to leave that box checked if you had it checked at some point with a non zero value, and then enter $0 otherwise the old value will be stuck  in TurboTax, in other words unchecking the special handling will not delete the old value from the summation in Box 1 of the MA Form Exclusions (Another bug). The zombie old-value will be shown in the Forms view too, but not in the Step-by-Step for the 1099-DIV

Thank you very much for the detailed response.  I am still struggling with how this would be entered in Turbo Tax.  I will clarify a couple points so hopefully that will make the answer a little easier. Hopefully this scenario is relevant to other TT users. Overview, the company I worked for was acquired; as a result, my vested shares were exercised (I hadn't purchased any) and sold on my behalf.  The sale price was higher than the grant price . Trying to figure out how to enter this in TT.  1. There is no amount included on my W-2; I confirmed that. (either in box 1 or box 14).  2. I did not receive a 1099-B for the sale; I only received IRS Form 3921. (I am trying to locate a 1099-B.  There is nothing listed on the brokerage website which actually completed this for the company & the new company accounting department has not located one.) 3. To keep it simple, let's say I only had 1 share. Grant Date 1/22/2020; Grant price 64 cents, Market price on grant date 64 cents. Settlement Date 10/2/24; Fair Market Value for Exercise $2.20. (The share was sold on my behalf once it was exercised; I did not have to purchase it, they deducted the 64 cents from $2.20 so the 3921 showed "Net Proceeds" = $1.56.)  4. I entered this information in the stock sales since the sale price was the exercise price.  TT auto checked W2 disposition amt & Reported on W2. I unchecked Reported on W2.  Is it possible it isn't taxable since it was sold  5. I am not sure why you suggested I also complete information in the Other Reportable Income section.  (Exercise Mkt Value was the same as Sales Price). Perhaps you thought it  sold at a different price than the exercise price?  Any additional clarification would be much appreciated. thanks again.

I am getting the message "Tax Year 2024 transmissions trouble.. Please try again" for my federal amendment return in e-file status tab. My NC state amendment return was accepted though. I am using Turbo Tax Premier version and also filing Fed&NC state. When I try filing again for federal, the software won't just let me do that. It is just circling between two windows and won't let me go to e-file page.   Anyone else is facing this ?

@ Bub333  asked:  "I completed my 2024 taxes and filed, saved the forms as pdf. My taxes did not save in turbo tax and I cannot open them in turbo tax? What happened?   I can't tell from that small amount of information if you are using Online TurboTax or desktop software.  Please clarify that.   If you're using Online TurboTax, what do you see when you log into your account and go to the Tax Home?   Do you see evidence that you used it to prepare a 2024 return, but you don't know how to get back to it?  OR is it acting like you haven't started one in that account?

6:51 PM (31 minutes ago)             Reply     to TurboTax                   Hi Bill! That was fast!  Thank you! So let me take these in order. 1. Not positive but in 2023 I did NOT enter an amount on 8889.  2. Yep, box 12A. 3. Correct. Boxes 1 and 16 on my W2 have been different for my whole time at my employer. 4. Amending and deleting form 8889 was my original thought...until I saw I owed PA money when I did that! 5. I did not realize HSA was deductible in PA until I tried to amend, remove form 8889, and saw my amount go from a refund of $27 to an amount due of $40. If that makes sense!

I've been trying to file my return for two months now.  The "fix" was promised for 3/17, then 3/27, now 4/4?   I share a home with my fiance, I paid for the solar system and want the full credit.  I've called Turbo Tax a couple of times, and don't get answers.  I finally got to someone who was very nice, and is looking into it, but nothing yet.   Now you are telling us you won't provide a pop up statement to fill in and attach to the return so it can be filed electronically?  If that has been the case you should have told us in February and I would have mailed the return then and maybe got the credit by now.   The mail service is terrible since Covid, mail is lost and never delivered and that is becoming common place with our postal "service".   I paid for Turbo tax so I could prepare my return and e file it.  I expect a full refund or at a minimum a credit for 2025 Premier!   I have spent hours and hours on this, filing rejected returns, calling Turbo Tax, etc.  This is completely unacceptable.  Anyone that invested in Solar last year and is having these issues should be refunded and told clearly and honestly IF a fix will be made and when or to mail their return now.  April 15 is fast approaching.   Kick this up to someone in upper management that is empowered to take action!   Eric Petersen

Yes, you may report a Casualty Loss for all farm assets lost due to a Federally Declared Disaster, even if you had no income. You will need an appraisal for the trees that were lost, before and after the hurricane.    If the casualty loss is greater than your income, you will have a Net Operating Loss. Generally, when there is a NOL at the end of the year, then you have to carryback the whole NOL to the two tax years before the NOL year ('carryback period'). Then, if there is any leftover NOL after the carryback period, you carryforward the balance for up to 20 years after the NOL year ('carryforward period'). You can't deduct any part of the NOL after the carryforward period.   TurboTax will help you with this situation. Search on "nol" to access that topic.

The interest you paid both before and after the construction period can be deducted as a business expense in the year you paid ( or accrued) it.  The interest you pay on the loan during the construction period is not deductible.  Instead, this cost must be added to the basis of your property and depreciated over 27.5 years.
So I’m being told by the IRS that Turno Tax will send me a check for my remaining refund. How long does it take for Turbo to send out a check???
