If I live in Michigan but work in Illinois. Do I need to file an Illinois tax return?
The university is not a branch of the state government.  Your answer should be NO.

There is no version called "sole proprietor."    If you have self-employment income for which you prepare a Schedule C (or even two Schedule C's for two businesses) you can use online Premium or desktop Home and Business.   If you have a S-corps, C-corps or multi-member partnership, you need TurboTax Business.
Yes, you understand this correctly. If the only income the decedent had was SS Disability, there would be no need to file a tax return.

The usual reason for the qualified business income (QBI) deduction mysteriously showing up on your tax return is that you have an amount in box 5 of a 1099-DIV (Section 199A dividends).   This is income from REITs (Real estate investment trusts). Your mutual fund has holdings (investments) in REITs. It qualifies for the QBI deduction. Don't try to remove.  The alternative is delete the box 5 amount at the 1099-DIV screen.  The amount is already included in box1, so it gets reported and taxed, even if your remove it from box 5.

Yes, absolutely! If this was the first time your business showed a profit and you didn't make any estimated payments to cover the additional tax, this could be the first time you are seeing an underpayment penalty.  No, if your expenses exceed your income for your business, you wouldn't need to pay estimated tax for that income, because there would be no additional taxes due.

It depends. As long as they are paying you through the difficulty of care program since you live in the same home and provide their care, yes you would qualify.   In this situation you would still need to enter the 1099- Misc and then back the income out since they sent it on a 1099 instead of a W2. To enter the 1099 Misc as non-self-employment income take the following steps: Income 1099-MIsc under Other Common Income Enter the information from the 1099-MIsc Continue through and say the work does NOT involve work that is like your main job Select the years you received it Say no, to did this involve an intent to earn money Then you will take the following steps to remove the income: Income Less Common Income Miscellaneous Income Other Reportable Income Answer Yes to Any Other Taxable Income Enter the description such as 1099-Misc received for nontaxable Difficulty of Care payments Enter the amount on the 1099-Misc as a negative number.

You can either just enter 50% of the total in one of the specified categories and keep your own notes that you only claimed 50% for business, or put it in the miscellaneous expenses category where you can type 'Internet 50%' as the description.  Either way will work.     TurboTax will not prorate the amount for you, so you need to calculate it and enter only 50% of the total if that is the amount you used for business purposes.   @TechTracker

I logged into my TurboTax desktop version using my desktop icon as I usually do, and have done for the past 12 years. The first thing that came up was the update feature, which I downloaded those changes, and when TurboTax restarted it gave me the online version, not the desktop version for which I had paid. I had filed my taxes via the Desktop version several weeks ago and was going back in to print out a second set of returns for my partner. So, the switch to the online version came immediately after the updates. And now, when I use the desktop icons for my previous year's TurboTax returns, each one goes into the online version. So yes, it was the update that made the change. If I wanted the online version, I would have purchased it.

To file a new prior-year return for tax year 2023, 2022, or 2021, you'll need to purchase and download that year's TurboTax software for PC or Mac, as TurboTax Online and the mobile app are only available for the current tax year.   Note: Returns for tax year 2020 and earlier are no longer eligible to be filed through TurboTax.   Prior-year returns must be paper-filed, as e-filing is no longer available for them. We'll walk you through that process when you get to the File section in the software.   After installing the software, open it and follow the onscreen instructions to file your return.
