I spent 2+ hrs on the phone with TurboxTax support.  They gave me endless "codes" that didn't work.  I hung up and figured it out.   Go to: Help ->  "Pay by Phone" ->  "State eFile" and call 1-877-559-8824 (do not call Turbo Tax support - they do not know how to resolve it).  The SALES person will take your information and give you a correct "State eFile Confirmation Number" to file.

I am using TurboTax Home and Business for Windows.  I am running it on a Mac Powerbook using Parallels for a Windows partition. I am unable to "right click" on a calculated field for a California state return on the Sch CA(540NR) form.  I do see the ability to go to worksheets for fields on the Federal return.   Does the "right click" capability exist for state returns?  There are fields that are titled like they are being summed across W2's but don't add up when reviewing the W2s.   Thanks for any help.

You'll need to use Form 6781: Gains and Losses from Section 1256 Contracts and Straddles.   TurboTax Desktop: To begin your entry Search (upper right) type form 6781 > click Jump to... link and answer the questions. TurboTax Online: Wages & Income > Scroll to Less common Investments and Savings > Select Contracts and Straddles Start or Revisit > Continue to answer the questions About form 6781 Under normal circumstances, if you buy a stock at $100 per share and hold it for 10 years, you don't have to report any gains or losses until you sell it. With Section 1256 investments, IRS requires you to report actual or would-be gains and losses through the end of the year on Form 6781. The basics of Section 1256 investments are as follows: You report gains and losses—as a result of an actual sale or the fair market value—through December 31 of each year. You complete Form 6781 even if you keep the investments. The process of assigning fair market value to investments you continue to hold, and don’t sell, is called “mark to market.” For tax purposes, every Section 1256 gain or loss is treated as being 60% long term and 40% short term, no matter how long you own it. Using Form 6781 Completing the form is similar to reporting any type of investment. Here’s the breakdown: Part I: Report your Section 1256 investment gains and losses at either the actual price at which you sold these investments or the "mark-to-market" price established on December 31. Part II: Report the gains and losses on your straddles, with losses reported in Section A and gains calculated in Section B. Part III: Meant for any unrecognized gains you have on positions held at the end of the tax year, but you only have to complete it if you have a recognized loss on a position. What is Form 6781: Gains and Losses from Section 1256 Contracts and Straddles

In order to assist you properly, can you tell us which version of TurboTax you are using; Online or Desktop?   If you are using TurboTax Online, You have to complete one of the spouse return (e.g. your father) and then when everything is completed, you click on 2024 Tax return (left menu), select the other spouse name (e.g. your mother) at the top of the page and you start entering the info.   We do not have an issue like this reported, at the moment. If the issue persist, let us know and we will have a closer look at it.   Thank you for choosing TurboTax.

Yes, the Form 1099-R has to be reported on your federal tax return.   To enter, edit or delete a form 1099-R - Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business) Click on Wages and Income (Personal Income using Home and Business) Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown) Scroll down to Retirement Plans and Social Security On IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R), click the start or update button
Thanks for responding.  H in Box 7.  Think the 401k company screwed up my 1099R.

I am a 19-year-old full-time college student with a part-time job and who is a dependent. I earned $5,500 at my work in earned income and had some taxes withheld. In addition, I have a few low-dollar stocks that only made around $25 for the year. Because I am under the standard deduction, I would like to file a tax return to gain my withheld taxes, but my negligible amount of unearned income is trying to get me to pay for the premium turbo tax account. If I did the premium turbo tax account, I wouldn't be gaining much, and it wouldn't be worth filing. Is there a free option to file my taxes with both earned and unearned income, or is there a way to leave off the unearned income because it is such a small amount and well below $1,400? Then again, if my unearned income is so low, do I even have to report it on my tax filing?

@DanaB27 Thank you for the response. So, to confirm - I will not need to do anything in my 2024 return.   Based on this discussion, https://ttlc.intuit.com/community/taxes/discussion/withdrawing-excess-roth-ira-contribution/00/3434643  -  I thought I needed to enter a 1099-R as indicated here since after all this is excess contribution I did in 2024 (though I did receive my distribution + earning last week ie. in 2025)? This was the message I was following (though it differs from my case where I was using the Roth 401(k) - post tax money).   Please let me know when you get a chance. Thank you.
I"m trying to finish my taxes and reviewing. I didn't have a mortgage, loan or lender. I can't finish without putting something in, it won't finish.
