For what year? What is wrong? Can you give some details? How are you comparing to the Standard Deduction? There are several limits to itemizing like for medical, state taxes, mortgage interest.

I have old Quicken 2013 and it still works on Windows 11. By the way, Quicken hasn't been owned by Intuit for many many years. They are completely separate now. QuickBooks is still with Intuit.

I posted a message to the president's office last week and got a call back the next day. Spent twenty minutes on the phone with a very nice lady who listened patiently to all my complaints and comments. She suggested using the online version, but told me it doesn't have the Forms option, which I use to check some of the more complex transactions I need to report. I also asked her if online would still let me do the tax returns for a couple of family members, and she said that online doesn't allow that either. Then I asked her about the cost of the online version of Premium, and it comes out much more expensive than buying the desktop version when there's a deal at Amazon (which there always is). So I'd be paying more for less. I hope enough unhappy users are messaging the president that it might have some impact.

The IRS follows federal law, which overrules state court orders.
However, this sometimes means that what you can claim legally on your tax return, will violate a court order. The IRS will not care, but the family court might care very much.
Generally, if you have a parenting order, you can't just decide to ignore it if the situation changes, you have to ask the court for a modification. If you don't ask for a modification, the old order remains in effect, because that's how courts and court orders work.
You need to consult with an attorney who can review your specific facts and circumstances.

That is a good question, I would hope TT 2024 would run on Windows 11. Seems Intuit would have a legal responsibility to support 2024 so people can amend tax returns for year 2024. Then if it does run on Windows 11, it proves my point that they are not being truthful about must have Windows 11 for tax year 2025 software. And they are putting code in TT 2025 to check version and stop running or using a special feature in Windows 11 that has never been needed just to make you upgrade. Also to lazy to put code in 2025TT to work around Windows 11 issue. What they are doing makes no sense from a coding issue that I can think of, would like to hear a technical reasoning! Noting else I am running requires me to upgrade to Windows 11, same code is running right now in either environment 10 or 11.

No one at TurboTax can give you legal advice, and that seems to be what you really need. We can only tell you what the IRS says about claiming a child as a dependent. The IRS only cares about physical custody---who the child lived with for the most nights during a tax year. The IRS does not get involved in court orders, etc.
We do not know what "paper" you signed in 2018. You need the advice of an attorney regarding whatever you signed.
Are you the custodial parent? Do you have an agreement with the other parent to allow the other parent to claim them--due to divorce or that you live apart and share custody? Did one of you sign a Form 8332?
If there is a signed 8332 then the custodial parent retains the right to file as Head of Household, get earned income credit and the childcare credit. The non-custodial parent gets the child tax credit for children under the age of 17. If the child is 17 or older the non-custodial parent gets the $500 credit for other dependents.
If you and the other parent have a signed agreement, you need to indicate in MY INFO that you have such an agreement.
As far as the IRS is concerned, the custodial parent is the one with whom the child spent the most nights during the tax year--at least 183 nights.

@MICKEY79 Yes. All my programs back to and including 2019 open and run. I did have a problem getting 2024 to update. So ended up having to reinstall 2024. Here are my notes. 6/12/25 I updated my Windows 10 to Windows 11. Had trouble getting Turbo Tax 2024 updates (my 2023 program updated ok). Got error 1603. My Windows was updated. Tried lots of things, turning off A/V, restarting many times, clearing cache & cookies, updating Windows, etc. Got stuck with MS Net Framework. I seem to have Net 6 under Program Files (x86) instead of Net Framework 4.8. So I finally decided to uninstall TT and reinstall. Went to Settings-Apps-TurboTax 2024 and uninstalled. 6/15/25 Sunday. Logged into my Intuit Account - Products and downloaded 2024 again Windows_PC_TurboTax_Download (2).exe 409,926 kb. My first download was 1/3/2025 363,627 kb Installed it. It never asked for my License Code or to download my state. After it installed, it didn't automatically start so I clicked on the Desktop Icon to start. It asked me if I wanted to update. I did and it only updated California (to release 5/8/25). I think the new download had the current federal updates. All my returns were listed and opened.

He’s only able to do this because of an outdated parenting plan from 2018 that says he can clean my child every year and Now the judge has ordered that he can go to a accountant which he has a business so he has business interactions and personal relationships with people who are accountants and they get to decide how much he would have gotten if he had to claim my son which, if he had claim him, it would’ve been zero because he’s not independent my son‘s not independent of his but Then the judge is gonna take me back to court my next hearing to tell me how much I have to pay him and completely skip the IRS altogether
This is a very old conversation with 130+ posts. I don't know what your question is.
Basically, the IRS follows federal law, which overrides state laws and state court decisions.
However, your state court can find you in contempt if you ignore their rulings.
If you believe your state court is ordering you to do something illegal, you should talk to your attorney, and if necessary, hire a tax expert to explain it to the court for you.
However, in your situation, it appears that you should have allowed your ex to claim your child according to the parenting plan. Even though you might be entitled to claim your child under federal law, if the state court orders something, you generally should follow that order, and you can be penalized if you don't follow that order. If there was a parenting order from 2018, you can't just ignore it if the situation changes (but you can ask the court to change it, and it sounds like you should have done that a long time ago.)
If you want to dispute the damage calculation your ex comes up with, you will have to hire your own accountant to create an expert opinion for you.

my son’s father hasn’t been involved since 2021 of April. I clean my son and last year and I did so because I’m the one qualified, and that means criteria to claim my child as a dependent my son has not been a dependent of his fathers and years now, but still, he takes me to court from an outdated parenting plan that says he can claim our child, every other year on the years starting in the year 2018 when we signed this paper however since 2020 this is no longer been the reality that we’ve lived since I’ve had 400% custody of my son since April 2021 like I said, but the judge said says I have to amend my taxes and let him claim our son. I should’ve did this cause then it would’ve went through the IRS, but I did not realize, and I refused to do so because he does not qualify to be a dependent of my exes now the judge is completely going behind the IRS back telling my ex he can go to an accountant to decide how much you would have gotten if you claim my son, which, like I said, if you would’ve clean my son, he would’ve got zero because my son would not be dependent of his and hasn’t been for years not financially or physically and now he gets to go to the accountant. Decide how much he owe the IRS would’ve paid him and then they’re going to take that amount and put it on me as a payment that I need to make to him. How is this legal I don’t understand? Like what is wrong with the judge I don’t understand at all. It’s obvious that this is outdated. My son has not been in his father’s life or or vice versa. Neither one of them care to have a relationship I think I care more for them to have a relationship than they do in four years now!!

I would also like to register a complaint. Intuit is demonstrating that it no longer values its customers. To VolvoGirl, I'm so glad we can rely on you to stay on top of this! Shocked as well Intuit is trying AGAIN to discontinue ItsDeductible. And, why on earth would they do it on October 25, 2025 instead of at least allowing us to enter our December 2025 contributions?!?!?!?!?! They probably think that only a small number of Intuit customers actually have enough deductions to be able to bypass the standard deduction. I don't think that's the case. We've already said we're willing to pay extra for the service.
