@skideckel    <<To arrive at this number, you combine your mother’s original half of the purchase price ($5,000) >>   Assuming not a community property state, your mother's half would also include half the cost of improvements from the date of original purchase through 2017 and ALL the cost of imrprovments from 2017 onward.    if a community property state, your mother's half would include ALL the cost of improvements from 2017 forward and NONE of the improvement prior to 2017.

Paying your fees does not file your return.  Go all the way through the steps of the FILE section to a big orange button that says "Transmit my returns now" and click that button to e-file.   When you e-file your return you will get two emails from TurboTax.  The first one will say your return has been transmitted; the second one will tell you the IRS has accepted  or rejected your federal e-file.  If you filed a state return, there will be a third email (usually a day or two later) that tells you if the state e-file was accepted or rejected.

My children, who are full time students, have income over the threshold.  From what I can tell, I have to file separate 1040's for them. In the interview so far for my return, I have them as dependents based on the questions asked so far.  Where in do I enter info that will trigger form 8615 to be created so that on my form it is designated that they are filing separately?  Or, is there some other method of doing that?  Searching on "child income" and filling out that part, doesn't trigger creation of the form.  I also have an imported 1099 from a UTMA account (that is part of my logon at a broker and imported automatically when I imported my account) for them that I believe I have to delete?  I have desktop home and business (not listed as an option).

Not sure what the context is for your question.   If you are asking what to enter for 2024 AGI---choose the option that says you did not file a 2024 return or use zero.   If you are asking how to file a 2024 return now in 2026:   You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0     https://www.irs.gov/refunds   Refunds for tax years 2021 or earlier have been forfeited and will not be paid to you even if shown on the tax return form.  But if you owe tax due, you will still have to pay, and you will be billed later for the interest and penalties owed.  TurboTax will not calculate the penalties or  interest.   That will be done by the IRS/state after they receive your return with your payment of the tax due as shown on the tax form(s).       When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

How to determine federal short term or long term capital gains with the following information: Parents own house in Montana. They had 3 sons. Father died in 2007 (value 165,000). Mother gave son #3 the house in 2023 (value 250,000).  Mother dies Feb 2025. Son#3 gifts sons #2 and #1 (30% each of the house). Son #3 retains 40%. House sells for 270,000 on Dec  31, 2025.  Basis from 2009-2023 is 30,000. (Mothers) Basis from 2023-2025 is 5,000.(Son #3 ownership). Closing cost 9,000. How is this all documented in the federal tax forms and what IRS form?

It depends on whether your business remains active in your absence or if it is temporarily halted. For 2025, if there was any activity, even if it was temporarily suspended, you will enter the income and expenses for the period the business was active.   If your physician services business is active and continues to operate, even though you are on medical leave, then you would report the income and expenses as you normally do.    If your business has been put on hold until you recuperate, then it will remain inactive until you start operations again. Depending on the specific circumstances you may have start up expenses once you resume.
Also, it originally had $2100 as the "prior depreciation" and "prior AMT depreciation" defaulted. I changed it to zero to see if it would fix the problem. I am not selling the car.

My state tax refund was accepted 17 days ago, but I have yet to receive the deposit. I’ve already received my federal refund. I’m also unable to track my state refund on the proper California site. I’m wondering if I didn’t set up the deposit for the state correctly, or it might just take longer for the state deposit to occur.

Hi, thanks for the response.   We have the following forms: 1040, Schedule 1, Schedule 2, Schedule B, Schedule C, Schedule D, Form 8949, Schedule SE - spouse, Form 2555 - taxpayer and spouse, Form 8606 - taxpayer, Form 8959, Form 8960, and Form 8829 I've checked them all against the forms list and they're each listed as ready to e-file. The PDF from Turbotax also includes 1040ES and 1040-V - those are listed as unsupported. Could the system be trying to include those in the return and causing an issue?   AGI on our 1040 is positive.   We are using the bona fide residence test. We were out of the US for more than 330 full days so I just re-ran the FEIE section using the physical presence test, but that doesn't resolve the issue.
Thank you! The token number is  1354542. The state is CA.
