Can I e-file my federal Form 1040-X amended return? by TurboTax •       4828 Updated January 14, 2026 9:34 AM   Generally, you can e-file your amended 2025, 2024, or 2023 federal return via TurboTax if your original return was also e-filed in TurboTax. However, there's a chance your return can't be e-filed based on your unique situation. If this happens, you'll need to print and mail your tax return. If you're amending your return for 2022 or earlier, you need to print and mail your amended return. Follow these instructions to amend a prior-year return. Your amended return can take up to 20 weeks for the IRS to process. If further review of your return is necessary, the IRS may take longer. Three weeks after mailing your amendment, you can start tracking it at Where's My Amended Return? on IRS.gov.

What tax year are you asking about?   If you are trying to file a rejected past year return, the ONLY way you can file it is by mail, so you need to print the revised copy that is correct in order to mail a correct tax return in.  Past year returns cannot be e-filed.   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

We are unable to duplicate this form flow experience. Have you run updates when you open TurboTax Desktop?   If you are still seeing this experience after updating, you can share a copy of your TurboTax ".tax2025" file with us. This would be a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.     If you would like to do this, open your return and go to Online in the top menu, then choose "Send Tax File to Agent." You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number.   Reply to this thread with your Token number and tag (@) the Expert who requested it. This will allow us to open a copy of your return without seeing any personal information.   We will attempt to determine what is going on in your return and if possible, provide you with guidance to resolve the experience.

Thank you for your quick response.  When I opened TurboTax tonight, there was an update that needed to downloaded and I did that and it only took a few minutes.  But then when I went to the 1099R section, that message appeared again saying this section is closed until the updates have been completed.   It appears that all I can do is wait until it completes it update.  By your response, it's a planned update issued by Intuit and not some problem I'm having with the software.  So I'm pleased about that.  Thanks again.

No, long-term disability insurance payments which you receive after 6 months' absence from work are not subject to Social security, Medicare and Futa taxes, if they are paid to you more than 6 calendar months after the last month in which you worked.    Please refer to IRS Pub 15-A, Page 17.   The publication also shows two great examples supporting your situation.

Online TurboTax updates are more immediate.   If desktop hasn't yet updated, be aware that it may take longer for a desktop update to be pushed out to users since they are sometimes combined with other updates. It "could" happen in tonight's overnight weekly update, but that remains to be seen.   Otherwise, if not then perhaps in the next day or two.
The Turbo Tax section under "Income" says that the section "IRA, 401(k), Pension Plan Withdrawals (1099-R)" will be available soon. How soon is that??? It's already January 20, 2026!

@MADY1977 Until the IRS begins to accept/reject returns on January 26, they are all just sitting on servers in "pending."   There is no way for us to predict which one of your returns might get through the pipeline first.   It does not matter what software you used.   You will just have to wait and see which one gets accepted first----if either one gets accepted.   But if one gets accepted, the other will automatically be rejected.
