I had some of my invested RSUs sold by my company to cover the new Early FICA tax withholding requirement.  The amount appears in box 11. It is also accounted for in box 1 and box 16 of my W2.   How do I answer this question in TurboTax:  Did you take money out of your nonqualified pension plan?  Yes, I took this money out of my non-qualified or section 457 plan. No, this is money I contributed to my nonqualified or section 457 plan.   Neither answer seems correct.

I created two amendments to my Michigan return. The first was to match what they did, remove the pension subtraction.  I then did another amendment to add the deceased spouse information by doing manual overrides for those fields on form 4884.  I submitted this amendment to Michigan by e-file with the reason that I forgot to include the deceased spouse information.  I received a check from them yesterday - the refund that they had removed!  So that's what Michigan is looking for. If there's a "4" on the 1099R, the deceased spouse info is required,  even if the filer would be entitled to the subtraction by their age.

It depends. If you are calculating your home office deduction using a percentage of the square feet and taking depreciation on part of the home, then a capital improvement that pertains to the entire home such as a generator could be added as a separate asset and depreciated as well.   Whether you deduct the cost of an expenditure for the current year or recover it through depreciation over several years depends on whether it was for a minor repair or replacement or resulted in a capital improvement to your home.    Capital Improvements extend the life of your asset and are not an ongoing repair expense. This would include the improvements to the part of the home not related directly to the home office.  In other words, any capital improvements to the entire home are eligible to be use as part of the cost of your home.  For any year after the year your business began, you would add an asset called improvements.  The home office use percentage will be applied to this new asset.     For example, if you repair some minor damage to the floor, that could be seen as a current year expense. If, however, you replaced the flooring throughout the home, the new flooring would be listed as a new asset subject to depreciation.   The difference between repairs and capital improvements is also discussed in this TurboTax tips article.   @user17754131067

You can edit the child's information in the dependent section of TurboTax where you initially entered your child's information. This is the information that flows to ‌Form 4547 for the Trump savings accounts.   In the Personal Info section on the screen that says Your Personal Info Summary, click on Edit the right of your dependent's name and review your TurboTax screens to edit your dependent's information.   Children born from 2025–2028 and who are U.S. citizens are eligible for the one-time $1,000 deposit from the U.S Treasury once their Trump account is created.   This doesn’t count toward annual contribution limits. Some children, even those born outside 2025–2028, may qualify for other automatic contributions through private donations.   You will also be able to open an account at trumpaccounts.gov starting in the summer of 2026.    A Form 4547 is used to initiate the "Trump Account", with contributions that will start in July 2026.  The Trump Account is for children under 18 with a valid SSN. The contribution is a $1,000 contribution for children born between Jan 1, 2025, and Dec 31, 2028. Click here for What are Trump accounts? You can use the below instructions to download your prior year tax return, then you can pull that same number off of the 2024 Form 1040 line 24, and enter that amount into the '2024 tax liability field'. You can also Ctrl + F search for "2210" to find the 2024 Underpayment of Estimated Tax form if it is included (line 4 just asks for the current year tax, same as what's on the 1040).    To print: If you've started your return already Sign in to your TurboTax account. Make sure you're using the same TurboTax account (same user ID) as in previous years. There are two ways to get your prior-year returns: Select Documents from the menu, use the dropdown menu to choose the tax year you want, and select Download tax PDF. On Tax home, scroll down and select Your tax returns & documents. Select the year you want and select Download/print return (PDF). If the year you're looking for isn't there, it might be in a different account. Go here to find all of your accounts. One of them should have the return you're looking for. If you do not see the QBI, check if:   The QBI deduction may be zero if your Total Taxable Income is zero.  Even though you have $29,000 in business profit, the QBI deduction is calculated as the lesser of: 20% of your Qualified Business Income, OR 20% of your Total Taxable Income (minus capital gains).  For the 2025 tax year, the Standard Deduction for married couples rose to $31,500. If your total income (Business + W-2s) minus deductions falls below zero, there is no "Taxable Income" to apply the 20% deduction against.   OR   TurboTax must aggregate all your businesses to calculate QBI.  If you had businesses with losses, they must first offset the income before QBI is applied.
