As AnnetteB6 mentioned, the results in TurboTax, which are correct, come from the fact that for taxable income below $100,000 you are required to use the tax tables.  At taxable income of $3,000 and above, the tax tables are implemented in steps of $50 and the tax is calculated on the midpoint of the step.  This means that for $10,000 of taxable income, the tax is calculated as 10% of $10,025 = $1,003 (rounded).  Similarly, the tax on $5,000 is calculated as 10% of $5,025 = $503.  You can demonstrate this stepwise characteristic by seeing that the tax on $10,049 is still $1,003, not $1,005.  The tax on $10,050, just $1 more, jumps to $1,008 because it is calculated as 10% of $10,075.

Perhaps something in your return is preventing your input. We would like to test this further using a TurboTax ".tax2025" file that is experiencing this issue.   You can send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information.  If you would like to do this, please follow these instructions:    In TurboTax Online, open your return, go to the black panel on the left side of your program and select Tax Tools.  Then select Tools below Tax Tools. A window will pop up which says Tools Center. On this screen, select Share my file with Agent. You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is.  Click okay through this screen and then you will get a Token number. You may wish to snap a screenshot to post instead of the actual number. Reply to this thread with your Token number (including the dash) and tag (@) the Expert requesting the token from you. Please include any States that are part of your return - this is VERY important. If you are using TurboTax for Desktop, go to Online in the top menu, then choose "Send Tax File to Agent."   We will then be able to see the same experience you are having. If we are able to determine the cause, we'll reply here and provide you with a resolution.

Q. How do I account for this on Turbo Tax to get a refund of the taxes taken out? A. You enter the W-2 exactly as received.  Scholarships awarded for working are taxable.  So, you may not get much or any refund of the income tax withholding shown in box 2 of the W-2.  Work scholarships, from the school, are usually not subject to social security and Medicare (FICA) tax, so there is usually no withholding shown in boxes 4 & 6.    But since taxable income was used to pay  for tuition, you are eligible to claim a tuition credit. But there seems to be some question of whether that would be for 2024 or 2025.

After looking further into this, this is not an error and is not affecting the calculations.  This is a hard limit that is on the form for previously used vehicles.  If you look at line 4a, you will see the actual amount of the credit.  Line 16 is not being used in any calculations relevant to this situation.  @Bwon84 @Linda P

If you help manage your elderly parent's property investments without a formal business, you generally can't deduct related expenses as business deductions unless you operate a sole proprietorship or LLC for that purpose. Forming a sole proprietorship or LLC focused on managing these investments might allow you to deduct ordinary and necessary business expenses. These could include costs like travel, office supplies, or professional fees directly related to managing the property. However, for expenses to be deductible, the activity must be engaged in for profit and properly reported as a business. Since you aren't set up as a business, personal expenses or those not connected to a business likely won't qualify. Considering you don't seek reimbursement, establishing a legal business entity could provide a framework to deduct legitimate expenses. Still, qualification depends on meeting IRS requirements for business activities.
