Review the rules regarding qualifications for a dependent to determine if you qualify as a dependent for your parent(s). It's determined by your age, income and other eligibility requirements. If you meet all these requirements, your parent can claim you as a qualifying child dependent. A qualifying child can earn an unlimited amount of money and be claimed as a dependent as long as they don’t provide more than half of their own support Rules for Claiming Dependents on Taxes.
To determine if you are considered a qualifying child, the following questions must be true:
The child must be related to you.
The child can’t be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
The child must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
If the child is married, they can’t file a joint return with their spouse.
The child must be under the age of 19 (or 24 for full-time students).
No age limit for permanently and totally disabled children.
The child must have lived with you for more than half the year (exceptions apply).
The child didn't provide more than half of their own support for the year.
Refer to the TurboTax article What does "financially support another person" mean? To determine if your son provided more than half of his support.
The following questions must be true if you are considered a qualifying relative dependent:
The individual can’t be claimed as a dependent by someone else.
The individual must be a U.S. citizen, resident alien, national, or a Canadian or Mexican resident.
If the individual is married, they can’t file a joint return with their spouse.
The individual must live with you all year.
The individual can’t have made more than $5,200 in income in 2025.
You must provide more than half of their total support for the year.
Please review the TurboTax Help article Who can I claim as my dependent? for more information.
If your parent(s) claimed you as a dependent, they would get the education credits if you are eligible.
For additional information, refer to the TurboTax articles Guide to Tax Form 1098-T: Tuition Statement and What Are Education Tax Credits? For additional information.

I am using Premier Online for the first time, because Premier Desktop, which I have used for years, no longer works on Windows 10. I entered all my Schedule A information, and my itemized deductions total well over $20k higher than the standard deduction. On the summary page, TT says that I have selected the standard deduction and gives me the option of changing it. When I change it to itemized and return to the calling page, it continues to say that i have selected the standard deduction and that the standard deduction provides me the best outcome, which I'm pretty sure is ridiculous. I never had a problem anything like this with the Desktop version. Does anyone have any idea what the problem could be? Is it a software bug? Does Online prevent selection of itemized, despite permitting entry of all the information? I'm pulling my hair out here and, believe me, there isn't much there to start with.

How do I preview my TurboTax Online return before filing?
In TurboTax Online there is no way to make entries directly on the forms. All entries have to be made in the question-and-answer interview.
If you wish, you can switch to TurboTax Desktop (what you call the "PC version) and transfer the tax return that you have created in TurboTax Online. See the following FAQ for instructions.
How do I switch from TurboTax Online to TurboTax Desktop?

I finally realized that the order of TurboTax's instructions for how to input the backdoor roth are REVERSED. I followed their instructions several times and the backdoor roth kept showing up as taxable on the 1040. Then I deleted the deduction and the 1099-R, and re-did it by putting in the 1099-R FIRST and then doing the contribution (in deduction section) SECOND. Extremely irritating and time consuming -- almost feels like a ploy to get additional fees :(

The new cloud version of TT asks strange questions and appears to be full of bugs - nothing like last year's PC version. I need to see what craziness it did with my information before filing.

Right. I never saw the charges during checkout, that's very weird! I did not seek expert help either, ever. This will be my last time filing with TT.

@mycowsky $64 is the current fee for a state return. Did you happen to add a second state? The offer is only good for 1 state return. Where were you able to select that upgrade offer? Do you happen to have Windows 10 and after attempting installation of desktop software did you encounter a migration offer when it could not be installed, that offered to move you to Online Premium for no additional fee? Or did you get an email offer from Intuit with a link to the special offer? Or was it something else?

The IRS as well as the state tax agencies charge taxpayers penalties for underpayment of estimated taxes. Each state has different methods of determining the penalty; sometimes it's a percent of the tax still due, and sometimes it's a penalty interest rate.
You can use the W-4 or Estimates tools in TurboTax under Other Tax Situations to figure out whether you need to change your wage withholding or other estimated payments.
See this TurboTax blog article for more information.
