You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0     https://www.irs.gov/refunds   Refunds for tax years 2021 or earlier have been forfeited and will not be paid to you even if shown on the tax return form.  But if you owe tax due, you will still have to pay, and you will be billed later for the interest and penalties owed.  TurboTax will not calculate the penalties or  interest.   That will be done by the IRS/state after they receive your return with your payment of the tax due as shown on the tax form(s).       When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Yes. Any distributions you take during the calendar year count toward your RMD.    To confirm, check Box 1 of your 2025 Form 1099-R (or combine totals if you have more than one). If that total is equal to or more than the RMD amount calculated for your account, then you have satisfied your RMD for the year. All distributions must have been processed by December 31, 2025 to count toward that year's RMD.   If, however, your total distributions were less than your RMD, you should take the remaining amount as soon as possible and request a waiver via Form 5329.

Paying your fees last year did not file your tax return.   Did you go all the way through the FILE section and click that big orange button that said "Transmit my returns now?"   If you did not do that, you did not file.   What does it show in your 2024 account?   Does it show that the return was accepted?   Or does it say something else---like "rejected," "printed," or "ready to mail?”   If you discover or realize that your e-file was rejected, or just never filed, you will need to print it, sign and date it in ink, and file it by mail now, since e-filing is closed for returns for tax year 2024.

Generally, no, you do not need to file a D.C. tax return if you live in Maryland and only worked in D.C..  Maryland and Washington D.C. have a reciprocal tax agreement. This means you only pay income taxes to the state where you live (Maryland), rather than where you earned the wages (D.C.).  The only reason a Maryland resident would file a D.C. return is if D.C. taxes were accidentally withheld from your paycheck. In this case, you file to get a refund of that money.

OK, when your employer moved $1,000 in HSA payroll contributions from 2026 to 2025, did they issue you a corrected W-2 for 2025?   The only other way for you to get "credit" for this contribution in 2025, is to go into the HSA interview and go until you see "Let's enter [name]'s HSA contributions". The second line is for "personal" contributions. Note that this just means that the contributions were not made through the employer. This number, at least, will affect your return by increasing the HSA deduction on line 13 on Schedule 1 (1040).   However, this really isn't the right way to do this. As I noted above, the code W amount is removed from Wages in boxes 1, 3, and 5 on the W-2. That is, HSA contributions through the employer are not subject to federal income tax, Social Security tax, nor Medicare tax. The contributions entered on line 13 of Schedule 1 (1040) still had to pay Social Security and Medicare taxes on the contributions.   The options that "my "company contributed but it was not reported on my w2"" works only if the Wages amounts in boxes 1, 3, and 5 were already correct (i.e., the correct employer contributions were removed), but the code W amount was not correct.   If you make this entry otherwise, then you will not get "credit" for these HSA contributions in 2025.   I really think your company needs to issue a corrected W-2 with the Wages and the code W amounts all changed.

You can continue your Montana state filing in TurboTax without scanning or providing a state ID or driver's license by simply leaving the fields blank and clicking "Continue". While the software asks for this information as an added security measure to fight fraud, it is not a requirement for filing your taxes in Montana.    If the software prompts you for ID information, follow these steps: Do not enter any text or numbers into the driver's license or state ID fields.  If there is a drop-down menu for "Type of ID," look for an option that says "I do not have either a license or state ID" . After leaving the fields blank or selecting the "none" option, click the Continue button. You may see a warning message stating that providing an ID helps protect your identity; you can safely ignore this and continue with the filing process. If you previously started entering information, be sure to delete everything in those fields before clicking continue, as partial data can cause errors.

It depends. The TurboTax Free Edition is for taxpayers who have a simple Form 1040 and don't need extra schedules. If your tax situation involves things like home ownership deductions, unemployment income, or self-employment, you'll need to upgrade to a version like Deluxe to make sure those specific forms are handled correctly.   See Why do I have to upgrade from Free Edition? for more information.   If you qualify and need to downgrade, on the left menu select Switch Products, then Downgrade.   If you need extra time, filing an extension by April 15, 2026, moves your submission deadline to October 15. But remember any taxes owed are still due in full by the original April 15 date.
