We have transferred all funds from Company A's IRA account directly to another IRA account at Company B. After the transfer, Company A closed the account, so we cannot obtain a copy of Form 1099-R. We need to complete Form 4852 as a substitute for Form 1099-R. When previewing the form, line 3, "Address," correctly displays the current foreign address, which is the same as the address on Form 1040. However, the TurboTax software reports an error and prompts us to correct the address. The software only allows us to enter a US address for correction. Even when we try to enter a US address in the "Let’s Check These Entries" section, the software still reports an error. We suspect this is because the entered US address does not match the foreign address shown on Form 1040.

@NN24 Yeah....a 1099-DIV has a subtle problem for box 12 $$. Go back to that page where you made the breakdown. 1) Select the first "One State" button and set that to "Multiple States" for all of it. THEN 2) Select the second button, and your original breakdown should still be there. Move on from that page and the proper amount from the second box's Multiple States value should be added to VA income...somewhere on the VA form....not necessarily with the initial $$ that transferred from Federal, but some added income line in the VA form.

I'm at a total loss on how to report the sale of this limited partnership. The partnership redeemed all of its units in 2025. I know to report it as a sale. But I'm not sure I am entering everything correctly in TT and answering the interview questions correctly. The limited partnership is part of a trust. The original investment came from two different accounts within the trust so I have 1099b's in two different accounts. One is for the $15,000 investment and the other for the $50,000 investment. Do I break the sale into 2 different sales - one for the $15000 and one for the $50,000?

Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities, There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals. Some states process returns quickly and some are very slow.

@stugaville Some states are particularly picky about box 14 having a value without a value in box 16....even though it's empty on most 1099-R forms. The solution is to enter the box 2a value into box 16, if box 2a has a real non-zero value in it...otherwise copy box 1 into box 16.

@user17756285304 I use Desktop.....so I'm not sure it is in the same place as the "Online" software. But in my Desktop software this works...try it in the online version. 1) Open your tax return 2) Go to the Federal "Other Tax Situations" page 3) Scroll to the bottom and hit Continue or Done....(whatever Online uses to step to the next page) 4) #3 Starts you thru some follow-up pages. Step thru those until you get to one "Let's take a second look at your info", with your Name, BirthDate, SSN, and a checkbox for having lived in the US....uncheck that box and then hit "Continue"

@MNSE_gal , if the amount shown in box 2a of the code-JP Form 1099-R was not reported on your 2024 tax return, you need to amend your 2024 tax return. With code J instead of code JP, if the 2024 tax return did not report the excess contribution on Form 5329, one needs to submit a substitute 2025 Form 1099-R (Form 4852) to show that this constitutes a return of the excess contribution before the due date of your 2024 tax return. If the 2024 tax return did not report the excess contribution on Form 5329 and one simply report the code-J Form 1099-R as received, one would need to amend your 2024 tax return to pay the 6% excess-contribution penalty.
