I am a pastor who lives in a church-owned parsonage (fair market rental value of $13,500, which is reported in Box 14 of my W-2). I also receive a housing exclusion approved annually in advance by church board resolution for maintenance and upkeep costs I incur for the parsonage ($5,000, also reported on my W-2 in Box 14). Both figures are correctly excluded from my wages in Box 1, so they are not subject to income tax. My question is this: what is the proper way to report the parsonage and housing exclusion for Self Employment purposes. I use Turbo Tax Home and Business, and the wording on the clergy screen makes my situation confusing. Here's the example/question: For “Parsonage or housing allowance received,” I report $13,500 (the fair market value of the parsonage). I take this to mean that amount is exempt from income tax but reportable for Self-Employment Tax for Social Security and Medicare, along with my W-2 wages) For “Qualified expenses,” I report $5,000 (the housing exclusion for the parsonage expenses). I take that to mean the expenses for which I have receipts toward maintaining the parsonage are excluded from my salary and exempt from income tax. The issue then becomes that Turbo Tax reports an additional $8,500 (the difference) under miscellaneous income, when I believe the entire $13,500 should be exempt from income tax. I've considered multiple possible solutions, including reporting a negative number (-$8,500) in special tax situations and labeling it parsonage as it is on the W-2. But I don't know whether that number should be the difference, the whole parsonage amount, whether a negative number is even proper -- or whether there is another solution considered the correct way. Any advice is appreciated.

Oh, really? When did they update? I opened the program late this afternoon (I've done it several times today) and didn't see an update to install, so finally I just hit File after I'd entered room and board (again) on the People worksheet and then selected Print ALL forms and worksheets and previewed, had my husband check them, and saved to PDF. Note that I only had to enter the information on the worksheet again because the past 2 days I've deleted and re-entered, then deleted all educational and even dependent information trying to get the interview questions about qualified educational expenses to come up, and they never did.

Appreciate the response, but it doesn't help my specific situation. I have now triple checked all of my entries and they are correct for each lot. I have all of the 3922 forms and have entered the info correctly to correct what is on my 1099-B. I cannot clear this item to review so I cannot file my taxes.

You have to access your own account and/or print it for yourself using exactly the same account and user ID that you used when you prepared the return.

SAVE YOUR TAX RETURNS !
EVERY year before mid-October you should save a copy of your tax return as a pdf and print a copy of it for your records. That way you will not be searching online frantically when you need it for a lender, FAFSA forms, your next tax return, etc.

After successful identity verification with the IRS, you can generally expect to receive your refund within 6 to 9 weeks. While the IRS officially states it can take up to 9 weeks, some taxpayers report receiving their refunds sooner, often within 2 to 4 weeks.

I'm using desktop, Deluxe with State. As others on this thread have done before me (thanks for your help), I go into 'forms' mode. I scroll down to people wks (worksheet). I select the one with my daughter's name. I then scroll down to line 6 in Part IV Expenses and input her room and board expenses in the Total column. I am able to save it and it does not disappear for me when I go back into TT. It stays there and it seems to work, as I am not paying more tax.

Enter all the educational expenses on the student's People worksheet, not the Student Info worksheet. Then Save. The numbers should transfer over to the Student Info worksheet.

I'm heading over to do the same thing. Should have done it a while ago, but I foolishly waited two weeks for TurboTax to release the function on Feb 13 as promised (after they had failed their original deadline of February). TurboTax is charging over $100 more than H&R for the same functionality, and I was only sticking with them because I was a 15 year customer.

When I've used the import function in pre-2025 versions of Turbotax, it always loaded all the 1099's (B/D, R) for my return from a mutual fund site. But in the 2025 version (home and Business), when I try to access my Franklin Templeton data, it loads from only a single specific account, not my entire set of funds. Is this new bug/feature for this year, or am I missing something.

NO!!!!! If you are someone else's dependent you can file your own tax return to seek a refund of tax withheld from boxes 2 and 17 of your W-2's but you must say in MY INFO that someone else can claim you as a dependent.
If you can be claimed as a dependent and you answer the question in My Info incorrectly, here is what happens if you e-file first: Your Social Security number goes into the IRS system as having been used. When your parents try to e-file, their e-file is rejected and they will find it impossible to e-file their own tax return. Then they will have to print, sign and mail their return and wait for months for it to be processed. You, meanwhile, will have to file an amended tax return on a special form called a 1040X, which also takes months for the IRS to process. So make sure you know the correct answer to "Can anyone claim you as a dependent on their tax return?"
