Hello,   In June of 2025, an $8,000 traditional IRA contribution was made for calendar 2025. The self employment earnings significantly decreased in calendar 2025, resulting in the max allowable contribution in calendar 2025 to be $4,500, so the calendar 2025 contribution has been over funded by $3,500.  The taxes for calendar year 2025 have not been filed yet, so I intend to contact Fidelity today to correct the over funding and have the excess $3500 contribution removed and any interest earned.  I anticipate the interest earned will be about $70? --> ($3500 x 4% annual interest for 6 months).   If Fidelity corrects the over funding today, can I proceed through Turbo Tax as if there were no over funding at all since the over funding was corrected in the same year?  The 1099 statement that was already issued will not include the $70 in interest.   Or, will I have to file a form 5329 under all circumstances, note the $3500 over funded correction in the same calendar year for 2025 tax reporting, and show the additional taxable interest income on the form 5329.  If this is the case, will Turbo Tax prompt through all of these questions so all the correct forms are generated?   Thank you!

Desplázate hacia abajo hasta Less Common Income (Ingresos Menos Comunes) y selecciona Start o Update (Comenzar o Actualizar) junto a Sale of Home or Other Real Estate (Venta de Casa u Otros Bienes Raíces).

When I go through the steps to file an extension, the final screen doesn't say anything about an extension. Instead, the button to submit says "Transmit my returns now" and there is a large warning at the top that this is just like dropping your returns in the mailbox. I do NOT want to inadvertently be transmitting my return!!! I'm suspecting this is just faulty verbiage, but nonetheless I am wary of clicking. Help!

The IRS website states:   Check No in the digital assets box if you:   Didn't own any digital assets Only owned or held digital assets in a wallet or account, but did not engage in any digital asset transactions during the year Purchased, but did not sell, digital assets using U.S. or other real currency, including through electronic platforms Transferred digital assets from one wallet or account you own or control to another wallet or account you own or control (unless you paid a transaction fee with digital assets. This would be a digital asset transaction.) If there are no digital asset transactions, there are no tax forms to be filled out.   Many, but not all, digital asset transactions will be reported on an IRS form 1099-DA.

In the State of Kansas, it normally takes 10-14 business days to receive a refund. Today it's March 9, so this is outside the 10-14 business day window. While it is difficult to speculate the reason, there are things you can do to find out why your deposit is delayed.   Check Online First: Go to the Kansas Refund Status Page. You'll need your SSN and the exact refund amount.  Use the Chat: Go to the KDOR Contact Page during business hours and look for the Chat icon. This is often faster than calling.

Yes, you want to wait for your initial return to be completely processed before starting your amendment, including payment made. Yes, you will amend 2024 if you made the same mistake. Assuming you filed that return in 2025, you can go ahead with that amendment now. And yes, you are correct to assume you'll be paying tax on the incorrect deduction for the HSA.    If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.  You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.  You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.  Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.   The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due  Only make changes to the areas of your return that need to be corrected.  You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment  Select your product below and follow the instructions.  Amend TurboTax Online  Amend TurboTax CD/Download

No, you are likely not being taxed twice, instead, you have likely claimed an extra deduction that decreased your tax bill more than it should have. Because your employer already subtracted that $1,760 from your taxable wages, entering it again in the deduction section tells the IRS you put in an additional $1,760 personally, not through payroll after-tax. This, in addition to the transposition error resulted in the incorrected deduction.   You were correct to put the amount on Form 8889, but the amounts from your W-2 Box 12 Code W were already sent to Employer Contributions on Line 9 automatically after you input your W-2. There was nothing further to report on line 2, which is where non-payroll contributions belong.   There's no cost to amend this year's return, but you'll need to pay the increase in tax to the IRS.  If you already have the Desktop version of the prior years, there is no cost either. If you do not already have the Desktop version for prior years, you can download TurboTax Desktop for years 2022-2024.

There is an option to go through the calculations to see if you are eligible to make a contribution to an IRA.  It comes up near the end of the filing process, but it can easily be missed.   You would see a screen titled, 'You might qualify for another tax break' at the beginning of that section.  Or, you can find it by going to Other Tax Situations > Retirement Savings > IRA Calculator Tool and clicking Start or Update.

Thank you for the clear and easy answer.   So, I need to amend, and I have a few questions   1.  I arranged for my payment to be taken out 4/10 already.   I've read I should wait for that (sometimes I don't see the actual withdrawal for 7-10 days after though).        When should I do the 2025 amend though?   2.  I assume I should amend 2024 if I made the same mistake?   3.  Would I be correct to assume I'll be paying tax on the $1760 I said I had as a deduction for HSA?   Wish that section was clearer.  Not many people know what a cafeteria plan is.   I appreciate your help!
