Thanks but that didn't answer my question. Let me clarify please. I lived in the home for half the year and rented for half the year so if I researched it correctly, I have to prorate the mortgage interest based on the number of days to each (which I loaded in TurboTax). Some of the prorated mortgage interest can be applied to the federal taxes (for the time I lived there) and the rest of the prorated interest can be applied to the rental expense. My question was does Turbo Tax calculate the prorated interest (after I load the 1098 data) or do I need to prorate it and then input into TurboTax in each of those areas? Thanks again

A form 1099-R reports the pension distribution in box 1 and the taxable portion of the pension distribution in box 2a. The difference is because you contributed some portion to the pension fund and the IRS presumes that you pay back a portion of that contribution on each year's income tax return.
The amount previously recovered is how much of the pension contribution you are considered to have paid back through the prior year's income tax returns.
You may be computing the taxable portion of the pension distribution in box 2a. You are likely using the simplified method of computing the taxable portion.

I live and work in California. IIn my W2, in Box 18, it says "CASDI" and then an amount. Now TurboTax wants me to fill out Locality in Box 20, but my W2 does not have it. What should I enter in Box 20 - the locality where I live, or where I work, or where my employer head office address is? Do I put a zip code in the locality, or county or city name?

Two years in a row I struggle to enter in my kids college expenses and it takes me hours to get my non taxable 529 distributions to not be taxed. I can't even see how to enter expenses paid for a non dependent. It used to be easy. This will my last year using Turbo Tax, after about 20 years. The only reason I'm finishing is I'm trapped in the Stuck Cost Fallacy- 1 hour to do everything else and 2 hours and 21 minutes trying to do this, so far!

My federalo refun d cam from SBTJ with almost $400 short due to "add on fe-onses" such as premium tax assist etc. When I call turbo tax to find out what was going on, the rep said I had signed u[ for all of thye "extras" which I clearly did not. She also said I rec'd an email from them showing the add ons and what day it was sent. I searched every folder known to the email world and found nothing. She also said that I could file for a refund of those charges and that I would need the order number. I asked what the number was and she said it was in the email showing the add ons. When I commented that I received no such email she proceeded to tell me she could not give it to me on the phone. She claimed she sent me the order receipt 2x more while we were on the phone. Of course I did not receive those either. How do I get my money back?

I was divorced in December 2025. I have three children: 19 - in college full time 20 - in college full time 16 - 50/50 custody with my ex. My ex is taking the tax credit for my youngest, who is a minor. We agreed that I could then claim the two older children, which would give me a $500 credit for each ($1,000 total). She is also taking the "head of household" filing status, which I believe means I must file as single. Is this correct? If I must file as single (because ex is filing HOH), how do I change my filing status to single? Turbotax won't let me!!! I go into "My Info" and there is no place where I can change filing status. It asks If I am divorced, I said yes. Then it auto-selected head of household. I didn't have a choice and can't change it.

There was an update on Friday that resolved this issue. If you are using TurboTax Online, the program updates automatically, just open the return, go through anything that may have changed and file the return.
If you are using TurboTax Desktop make sure all updates have been run on your program. You can do this by clicking on "Online" in the black bar across the top of your TurboTax screen. And then select "Check for Updates". If you have any additional questions or information regarding this please return to TurboTax Community and we would be glad to help.

That is hilarious, my wife dealt with me venting for 4 years over 1099-Q's and the tax program. In all fairness, the tax law is insane for college accounts. It stinks TT made the program more confusing by eliminating "other expenses". It's also confusing coordinating the returns between child and parent and I understand the order you enter data can impact results. To make matters worse, my kid's college did not correctly report 1099-T amounts for a couple years. Rant Over.

Follow up with this topic in 2026 as my scenario is unbelievably similar. 1. I put about $4,000 (rough number for easy math example) into my DC FSA - This number shows on Box 10 of my W2. I used it all to pay for day care. But that was not enough as the total came to close to $10,000. So I thought I couldn't claim some tax benefits on the difference $6,000. But when I tried to enter the provider information in the Dependent Care Credit section, my refund actually went up. So that mean I'm eligible for some tax benefits from the $6,000 difference? 2. Do I need to upload the receipts? I requested my relatives to help watch out my kid (all boxes are checked such as they didn't live with me, etc.), so it wasn't a formal business with EIN. Please help. Thanks!
