Hello BillM223, Thanks for your reply. Yes, I did keep HDHP coverage for all twelve months of year 2025. I selected "Self" for the year 2025 coverage. Then, the system asked me to update the coverage of year 2024. I selected "Self" for all twelve months of year 2024. Is that correct? Or should I select "NONE" for Jan through April for 2024 and "Self" for rest of months of year 2024? I tried to double check my selection. Where can I find the HSA contribution and healthcare coverage? Thanks. Best regards, Lei

I reached my minimum retirement age over this past year. My 1099-R doesn't tell me the amount of my annuity that was taxable, it says "unknown" in box 2a. But my understanding is that the taxable amount would now be somewhat less than the total annuity amount. If I leave box 2a blank on TT, versus putting in the same amount as box 1, it makes about a 6K difference in my refund. I get about 6K more by leaving box 2a blank. But I'm sure the majority of my annuity is in fact taxable, based upon my husband's 1099 amounts in box 1 and box 2a (he's not a disability retirement annuitant so he has info for box 2a). How do I determine the amount that is taxable? I got help from a TT tax expert and they told me to leave that 2a box blank and then my refund went up by about 6K but I don't think this is accurate? I'm using the desktop version of TT, not the online version.

Sold easement to APS for part of property purchased in 1980. Provided all long term gain info on my fed return (roughly $12000) and has been included in my adjusted gross income. When filling out AZ 140, it only asks for that info in line 20 and 22. Line 23 does not apply as property was purchased prior to 2011. I don't see where the gain is used in the tax calculation. Is it not used because it's been added to my fed adjusted gross income? Thanks

Did you use the Online Quick Employer Forms? In the Windows Home & Business Desktop program there are 2 ways to prepare them. Either Online using the Quick Employer Forms or on your Desktop with the built in Create Forms. If you created the W2/1099 forms using the Windows Home & Business version and used the Desktop Create Forms at the bottom of the big box instead of doing them online in the QEF Quick Employer Forms you have to print and mail them. If you want to efile them you would have to start over and fill them out again using Quick Employer Forms.

You can only consider a maximum of $3,000 expense per child or $6,000 total for the Child and Dependent care credit. Since you said there is $5,000 of employer provided child care per the entry in box 10 on your W-2 form , that would eliminate the qualifying expenses if you had only one child, as it is more than the $3,000 allowed. If you had two or more qualifying children, the maximum credit you would qualify for would be $200, or $6,000 less your employer contribution of $5,000 times 20%. Also, you need to make sure when you enter your W-2 forms that you earmark one for you and another for your spouse. If you mistakenly enter them all under one taxpayer's name, you would not get a child care credit as you both must work. If you can clarify how many qualifying children you have we may be able to help you better. You can learn more in this IRS article.

@dannymshy wrote: "used the free version, but because I paid, I can't start over. I'm not sure my return was right." Did you already efile (submitted the return), or are you at the end of the preparation stage but haven't yet efiled? If you used the Free Edition, what were you charged and paid for? The Free Edition should be free unless you added an optional feature. Did something in your return make you upgrade to a paid edition like Deluxe? Or did you add the PLUS feature ($29) to Free Edition? Print out your return and review it. Go over all the figures line by line to see if everything looks correct. If you spot something that looks "off", that will give you a clue as to where to look in the return interview.

Before you start:
Annuities that are non-qualified are funded with after tax dollars while a qualified annuity is funded with pre-tax dollars.
Your CSA form 1099-R:
Box 5 can show the health insurance and nontaxable funds for this year, determine your health insurance amount included
Box 9 -the total after tax money you contributed.
Box 9 is blank - find your OPM annuity statement from when you retired
You will need
Annuity start date is the first month you received your annuity benefit.
Age at start date- when you got your first check
If joint/ survivor - need age on that date as well
Amount previously recovered:
If this is your first year - you're done, zero previously recovered
If this is not your first year -look at last year's return for the Simplified Method Worksheet to see how much has already been used.
To enter:
Open your return to income section and select 1099-R section to begin
Select CSA 1099R
Enter the form
None of these situations apply
Enter health insurance
Select I didn't roll or convert this money - if you just spent it
A few more questions
Annuity -periodic? - Yes, you get it each month
Did you start getting in 2025? yes or no
The program diverges at this point but you can continue entering the information you have located above. I will keep going but yours may look a little different.
Was the total amount shown in the form - the amount you paid tax on? I would select no
Annuity information - fill in start date, your contributions, number of months in 2025, tax free amount previously recovered
More than one individual covered? select your answer
Enter age(s) when started

At a minimum, Intuit could test a federal tax return e-filing using the QMID of "I7Q6" (capital i) and perhaps provide an update to the customers. Apparently, others can have their federal returns accepted through TurboTax e-filing using QMID "L7Q6" which should be problematic for Intuit given that an incorrect QMID can pass their filing validators to successfully e-file and subsequently get accepted by the IRS. Customers are seeking clarity on this issue and the longer it takes to provide more information the greater customer dismay and frustration will be.

I have home and business and it has something within it that you can prepare 1099 NEC etc. However it does not allow me to efile. I had to print, and snail mail with tracking to the IRS. Customer service did not fix this said it would work on an update, and never suggested I use a different software type. I used the Home and Business last year and could efile. This year could not. Any suggestions? After the deadline this year, eg. 2/2/26 Turbo tax wanted to do a take over of my computer to look at it, but it was too late. An earlier look led them to say, well you just have to paper file. So I'd like to know how to get to quick forms.

Nothing about the rollover from the pension plan to the Roth IRA was reportable on Form 8606 that year. It created no basis in nondeductible traditional IRA contributions because it was rolled over to a Roth IRA not to a traditional IRA. Because this taxable rollover was from a pension plan not from a traditional IRA, it was not reportable on Form 8606 Part II. Part II is used only when the funds came from a traditional IRA not from a pension plan. Still, the rollover from the pension plan to the Roth IRA does create conversion basis in the Roth IRA the same as a Roth conversion from a traditional IRA would. The past rollover from the pension plan has nothing to do with the Roth conversion that you need to recharacterize or the recharacterization of that contribution. Still, it would be good to keep track of the conversion basis in case a Roth IRA distribution need to be made before age 59½. Since it has been more than 5 years since the rollover from the pension plan, the amount rolled over to the Roth IRA that year is now equivalent to Roth IRA contribution basis.

I then waited for the next update on 1.31.26, this didn't work either. I finally did what someone on Reddit suggested: add a dependent, with the same information as prior years, answer the questions correctly, delete the old mention of this person, and Voila. Fixed. There IS a bug in Turbo tax, and someone despite my many calls etc., they did not and have not fixed this. Basically if you have them in your system already, even if it worked last year it won't work this year. Sad but ture
