@dmertz wrote: "If the estate pays any tax due, it can distribute its assets (property and cash) tax free." Only if the the estate does not distribute the income in the same estate income tax year. Correct, and that needs to be monitored closely so as not to create an unnecessary tax liability.

I think I found the issue. The unearned income is actually over $2700. From the step-step process, I did not see the "total capital gain distribution", I only see the investment interest (1099-INT) and investment divident (1099-DIV). With the addition of the"total capital gain distribution", the unearned income is just over $2700.

I need to say sorry to anyone following this thread! The item was reported on 1099-B AND was included in Forms! What threw me was that it showed up in Interest (plus I have extremely bad eyesight)! For the record it was on 1099-B as line 1f accrued market disc (D). TT put it into the Capital Asset Sales Worksheet, into the Brokerage Statement. Code D - Short term sales with cost basis reported to IRS. It was listed in Forms as a Capital Asset sale, not as an interest. It also appears on Form 8949 "Sales and other dispositions of Capital Assets". So - good old TT saved my bacon again! My thanks to the Community as well.

The taxable amount of the conversion is the amount contributed to the traditional IRA plus all income earned by the money in the traditional IRA? The 1099-R lists the gross distribution and box 2b ( taxable amount not determined) is checked. The sum of the Traditional IRA contributions plus income earned are less than the gross distribution as reported on the 1099-R by several thousand dollars yet Turbotax has "0" in line 17 on form 8606.

I owed a few thousand dollars from my 2024 taxes that I paid in 2025. According to my searches, I can claim this amount as a subtraction of income in the state of Oregon. There is a section that says, "Federal Income Tax Paid" in the state section of Turbo Tax, however, this only asks me if I paid federal income tax in 2025. It does not have a place for me to enter the amount. Moreover, when I click "yes" it does nothing to adjust my return. The federal return section allows me to enter the amount of paid in state taxes but not in federal.

The 2025 salary deferral is whatever your spouse agreed to with her employer for 2025. It would never include prior amounts.

We have tested QBI for Schedule C but are unable to reproduce the experience you have seen. It would be helpful to have a TurboTax ".tax2025" file to test this issue further.
If you would be willing to send us a “diagnostic” file that has your “numbers” but not your personal information, please follow these instructions:
In TurboTax Desktop, open your return and go to Online in the TurboTax header. (On a Mac computer, choose Share or Help.)
Choose Send Tax File to Agent.
You will see a message explaining what the diagnostic copy is. Click Send on this screen and wait for the Token number to appear.
Reply to this thread with a screenshot of your Token number (this avoids Community filters for numbers with a dash) and tag (@) the Expert requesting the token from you.
Please include any States that are part of your return - this is VERY important.
We will then be able to see the same experience you are having. If we are able to determine the cause, we'll reply here and possibly provide you with a resolution.

You only need the file ending in .tax2024 to transfer into 2025. On the old computer, Your tax files end in .tax or .tax2022 or .tax2023 or .tax2024 etc. They should be in your Documents in a Turbo Tax folder. You should also have the pdf files of each year. Or search your computer for all files ending in .tax. Also if you haven't done it, I would open each year in the program and save it as a PDF file, go to File-Save to PDF so you don't need the program installed to view or print your return in the future like to get a mortgage or loan, etc. What I would do is just copy the whole Turbo Tax folder that is under your Documents. That should be where the .tax files and pdf files are stored. Copy that folder to a flash drive or best yet is to burn it to a CD or DVD and then you will have a backup of them. Then on the new computer copy the folder (or files) from the flash drive to your Documents folder. The programs need to be installed from the CD or download them again. You don't need to install them unless you need to amend or open a return. They only support the last 3 years so you might not be able to update older years or download any state programs you need.

I am assuming it was a direct rollover and that is reflected on the 5498. You don't need to do anything. If there was a problem it would have occurred in 2020.

The message means you did not apply for the WA Working Families Tax Credit yet. Washington State doesn't require you to file a tax return. The Washington state section is only for those who might qualify for the Washington Working Families Tax Credit (WFTC) and want to apply for it through TurboTax. You can claim the credit via TurboTax if you qualify. The state has an interactive tool to see if you qualify - you can find it linked below.
Do I qualify for the Washington State WFTC?

I noticed these all said "no" on mine too. I think it's because to get to the spot in the form where you would add those, you have to say "yes" to the windows and doors improvements, but then you can't add your address in that section. who was able to fix this for you? I don't have the "ask the expert" feature because I didn't pay for it!
