The “senior deduction” is added automatically by the software based on the date of birth and filing status you entered into MY INFO.  You do not need to take any extra steps to enter it. (And…the new senior deduction has nothing to do with whether you are getting Social Security)     2025 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS SINGLE $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind + $2000) MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $15,750  (65 or older/legally blind +1600) MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $31,500  (65 or older/legally blind + $1600) HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $23,625 (65 or older/legally blind + $2000)     For 2025 through 2028 there is an extra  deduction amount of up to $6000 per individual 65 or older filing Single, MFJ, or HOH which is phased out for taxpayers with modified adjusted gross income over $75,000 for single filers and $150,000 for joint filers.   The $6,000 senior deduction will be calculated on 1040 Schedule 1-A page 2 Part V Enhanced Deduction for Seniors which goes to 1040 line 13b. It is separate and in addition to the Standard Deduction or your Itemized Deductions on 1040 line 12e.  Turbo Tax automatically includes it. RMD – The wealth manager Company issued two 1099Rs for my holdings with them.  One for those 1099Rs was for funds which were applied to charitable receivers.  The other for the balance of the RMD  The question posed for each 1099R in TurboTax Deluxe, for each 1099R is what is the TOTAL RMD.  Accordingly, I gave the total RMD in both cases.   As a result, additional taxes and perhaps penalties were assessed because TurboTax believed the RMD is two times what the real RMD is.  Can the program recognize that the institution’s RMD is one number and that the 1099Rs reflect multiple withdrawals to satisfy that requirement?   Or can the question be modified to reflect this sort of situation?  Like "What is the total RMD? if the multiple 1099Rs have been issued, this enter the appropriate portion of the RMD."

I truly hate to disappoint you. But you are incorrect. We carry full medical and full wage loss on our full coverage auto insurance. Michigan is a no fault state. Our health insurance does not cover any auto accidents first. They are secondary auto insurance is primary. We pay big time to carry it. As we were told many times. That is why you carry auto insurance.

Q.  Does it make a difference if the tax-free/taxable financial aid is a pell grant when determining if its student self support? A. No.   Q. Or are Pell grants considered scholarships whether it’s taxable or tax-free? A. Yes.   Q. Therefore a tax-free or taxable scholarship/pell grant/off campus scholarship is not considered as her providing her own support?  A. Yes   Q. The majority of her total expenses for the year would’ve been covered by scholarship/pell grant. Yet, we can still claim her as a dependent even though the majority of her expenses are paid from taxable and tax-free scholarship/pell grant? A. Yes.    The rule is: for the support calculation, you ignore the scholarship money and everything it pays for.  You count only the support provided by other money.     The rule was written that way specifically, for people in your situation.  Scholarships do not prevent the parent from claiming the student as a dependent.

I've used Turbotax since the 90s and now you've made it so complicated.  I just want to use my license code.  No clear instructions on how to do that without the CD we use to get.  Looking at the comments and everyone is asking the same question and I can't see where they are getting clear answers. Would you like to try to provide a clear answer?

See IRS instructions for 1040 page 110 https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/i1040gi.pdf If you are married and filing jointly, both you and your spouse were born before January 2, 1961, and you both have a valid SSN, the maximum amount of the enhanced deduction for seniors is $12,000. The $6,000 per person amount is reduced if your MAGI is more than the amount shown next for your filing status.   It says PER PERSON.  Also then why would they even have 2 lines 36a and 36b for spouse on Schedule 1-A?
