The IRS says I short-payed my taxes by $8,000+ in 2023. The fines and interest comes to close to $3,000.   Apparently,as besy as I can determine, Turbotax did not pull all the dividens and capital gains data from my Vanguard account through their automatic download system. They did get some but they missed the larger amount.   I now learn this is a known issue between these two companies since Vanguard has changed their business model from a mutual fund company to a brokerage, which I never used.   I'm on the hook for this money (still have not heard from my state but assume I will get a similar statement from them soon enough) because I trusted them. I lost on that deal.   Just letting others know to double check their imported investment data or go back to the old way of typing it all in yourself to be sure it's accurate.

I realize this is an uncommon question, but I accidentally switched who was in the Primary Tax Filer line on my 2024 taxes and the IRS sent it to review. Who should I put in the Primary Tax Filer line for 2025 taxes, while the previous year still hasn't been processed? I would love to not have 2025 taxes sent to review for up to 3 years.

It is impossible to e-file yet, so you can still fix this mistake.   Do NOT click on anything that says "amend."   You only do that for a return that has been filed and fully processed.    Either use "clear and start over" to clear out the 2024 information you entered ---or if it is too late because you already registered or paid, you will need to delete any 2024 information you entered into the software and replace it when you have 2025 tax information to enter.   A 2024 return cannot be prepared online, and it cannot be e-filed.   You cannot change the tax year.   The current online program is for 2025 only.   Only a 2025 return can be prepared online and only a 2025 return can be e-filed.   Online preparation and e-filing for 2022, 2023, and  2024 is permanently closed. Note:  The desktop software you need to prepare the prior year return must be installed/downloaded to a full PC or Mac.  It cannot be used on a mobile device.   To file a return for a prior tax year  If you need to prepare a return for 2022, 2023, or 2024  you can purchase and download desktop software to do it, then print, sign,  and mail the return(s) https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/past-years-products/ You may also want to explore purchasing the software from various retailers such as Amazon, Costco, Best Buy, Walmart, Sam’s, etc.   Remember to prepare your state return as well—if you live in a state that has a state income tax.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m6e06um0   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.
