Thank you. I’ve contacted a tax advocate- nothing but what I said they needed per the congressman. IRS has no idea and says nothings been mailed. Just a delay. The letter the tax advocate sent says I need to send them my son’s transcripts, loan and grant disbursement which I thought ridiculous because the 1098 included that. I feel harassed and not finding help anywhere

So, I understand that 2024 RMD passed, but are you saying I do not have to worry about taking an RMD for 2025? Would you suggest that I go ahead and transfer $8000 from my checking to my Roth account today? I know it wont fix everything, but will it help some with the penalty I am facing at tax time?
Thank you,
RMD is the minimum amount you must withdraw, put in your bank account, and have taxed, before you can do something else like a rollover. It is not a specific, special transaction, just a withdrawal amount. Since you withdrew your entire account, put it in your bank account and its being taxed, and you can't do any rollover (because it is past the 60 day window) you meet (and greatly exceed) the requirement. In other words, this complete withdrawal satisfies any RMD rule.
If you were eligible for rollover, the withdrawal would still satisfy the RMD rule, as long as you held that amount out of the rollover. In other words, if the balance was $100,000 and your RMD was $5000, you would have to hold out $5000 that you keep and pay tax on, and you could rollover up to the remaining $95,000. But, as already discussed, this is not a rollover situation. Your withdrew and must pay tax on the entire amount. The RMD rules simply are irrelevant.
Also, you can't contribute any money to your Roth IRA unless you have compensation from working, which means wages and self-employment profits. You said you are retired. Unless you have a part-time job or side gig that pays at least $8000 in 2025, you can't make any Roth IRA contribution. (More specifically, your contribution limit is $8000, or the amount of your wages, whichever is less. If you took a part-time job as a Walmart greeter and were paid $2000, you could contribute $2000 to the IRA. And so on.)

Hello, I have a green card, and I am going to retire and receive social security retirement. Then I plan to move back to Japan. In this situation, I have to pay Tax on social security retirement payment to Japan as well as US. I studied that I can use foreign tax credit for US tax. I can see "Foreign Tax" under "Estimates and other taxes paid" section in the TurboTax. I'd like to know how to fill out. Thanks.

Do you have any dependents or children? You can't check the HOH box until you have entered dependent info and ssn. Enter them under My Info. Then Turbo Tax will automatically give you Head of Household if you qualify. See IRS Pub 501 page 10 for qualifying person. https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p501.pdf Head of Household doesn't mean where you live or if you own a house. Just that you are single or considered unmarried and provide support for a qualifying person (not a spouse or non-relative). Start by choosing Single or Married Filing Separately and when you enter a dependent, if you qualify it will change it to Head of Household.

When did you file your 2020 return? If you filed it timely in 2021, why did you wait until 2025 to ask about it? If you filed the return, and the refund was reduced by the IRS, the IRS would have sent a letter to explain the change in your refund. TurboTax gets no information from the IRS after you file your return, so no one at TT knows why the IRS reduced your refund, nor can TT find out ---the IRS will not share that information with TurboTax.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line. So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead. Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment". Then press 3 "for all other questions." Then press 2 "for all other questions." - When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything. - After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions. Then press 3 for all other inquiries It should then transfer you to an agent.

Although you have no tax liability, the AOTC has a refundable component of up to $1000 per student who you can claim as a dependent.
You have not mentioned whether you prepared your tax return using TurboTax. TT cannot intercede with the IRS for you. If you believe the IRS is incorrect, you could try contacting a Tax Advocate for help with the IRS.

The child-related credits can be confusing.
You do not get education credits for preschoolers. Education credits are generally entered for college students. You do not enter anything about education credit on a W-4.
The W-4 is asking you about the child tax credit----which you can get for your children who are under the age of 17.

@Bemmons55 Heed the advice of expert @evelynm ----The W-4 you fill out for your employer tells the employer how much to withhold for tax----the other post in this thread suggests "take more deductions"---which is incorrect. The newer version of the W-4 does not have you list exemptions or "deductions" on it---and if it did, claiming "more" would cause you to have less tax withheld, not more--and you would end up owing more at tax time. Use the W-4 calculator and make sure you are having enough tax withheld--you can even choose to have an extra amount withheld from each paycheck to make certain that you are having enough withheld.

Thank you Opus17. The only circumstances that I can see applies in my case, is when I filled out the paperwork to withdraw my contributions, the banker who notarized the paperwork suggested that I have the funds directly deposited into either my savings or checking account, which would be more convenient for me. Not realizing after sending the paperwork off that I was not the correct way to handle this. My error for realizing I had to make the correction within 60 days. I appreciate your help!
