@vlaino  What didn’t the state receive?  The tax return OR a payment if you had a tax due?   I would think a tax due payment since it’s probably too soon to ask about a tax return and they wouldn’t even know if you were suppose to file a tax return.   Your only proof of payment is your bank statement or credit card showing the payment coming out.  Turbo Tax only passes your bank account number to the IRS or state for them to take it out of your account.  (Most states do not let you pay by Direct Debit so you have to mail in a check or go directly to the state's website to pay).  And some banks use different routing numbers for deposits and payments.  Double check the number you entered with your bank.   Check the printout or PDF of your return; look for the state cover sheet with the Turbotax logo.  If you owed tax, it will show the payment information and how/when you decided to pay.  Read the state payment instructions carefully since most states cannot be paid from within the TT system and requires additional steps.
The state of Washington only gives state refunds to those who had a state tax removed. I was approved a state tax refund, but have yet to receive it

Ahh.  Thanks for that, it's encouraging.  I'll give it a try and report back.   Will need to wait until tomorrow, unfortunately.

Thanks for responding DoninGA.  The activation info isn't at my account.  The phone number you gave me is one I've tried to use.  The bot at that number sends me a link that informs me the activation info is in the vendor email, or on the sleeve of the cd etc.  Using the phone number does not appear to raise the possibility of talking with a human being who can address this.     Again, I can show proof of purchase from Amazon if the system allows that option.

Hi everyone,   I filed my taxes through TurboTax and expected a $3,000 refund from NY State. But NY ended up auditing my return, made adjustments on their own, and reduced the refund to $1,000 — without me submitting anything. They sent me $1,000 instead of the $3,000 I expected.   Later, I amended my federal return through TurboTax to reflect what NY had changed. But then TurboTax must have told NY I owed them $2,000 — and NY went ahead and took that money from my account.   So here’s where I’m at: I thought I’d get $3,000 NY said, “Nope, just $1,000” I amended my federal return NY took another $2,000 Now I’m effectively down $1,000 overall Has this happened to anyone else? I honestly don’t know what to do at this point. TurboTax hasn’t been helpful — I can’t get in touch with a real person, and there doesn’t seem to be a clear way to request a refund for the service.   I'm pretty sure TurboTax software is simply not capable of this scenario and I deeply regret using it but I'm stuck with it now. I’d rather switch to a professional like H&R Block or a local CPA, but I’m not even sure how to do that mid-process or if it would help now.   If anyone has advice — or has successfully gotten a refund from TurboTax so I can switch to something that can actually fix my issues — I’d really appreciate your insight. This situation is super uncomfortable and frustrating.   Thanks so much.

Did you e-file your state tax return and was it accepted? Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.   You complete your tax return by finishing all 3 Steps in the File section. In Step 3, to e-file your tax return, you must click on the large button labeled "Transmit my returns now".   After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.   Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.

If it where not the fact that so many seem to have this problem I thought it might be that you are in a different country or time zone. I was trying to log on to a bank after being in a different time zone and I could not do it until I noticed my clock was wrong. When I changed the clock I was able to log on....... Go figure that one. I had a problem many years ago and just turned off the antivirus and fixed a issue. This year 2024 was the first time I did not get a disc from TT and had to follow the same as you but I don't recall anything being a problem, The only difference was I had to log on to the TT website before it would work. Apparently this was the first year that if you want the disc you have to buy it separately. I think TT needs to have a support page where you can post directly to tech people and get answers and notification of problems and corrections. Wish I could help more.
used TT e-file but now need to be able to prove my return was filed and accepted

My reply at the other thread was incorrect and has been edited.   The LLC is  $2000 max per tax return, unlike the AOC which is $2500 max per student.     While technically there is a provision that allows your student-dependent to claim a federal tuition credit, on his own tax return, from a practical matter it seldom works out.  A full time student, under age 24, is only eligible for the refundable portion of the American Opportunity Credit (AOTC) if he/she supports himself by working. She cannot be supporting herself on student loans & grants and 529 plans and parental support.  It is usually best if the parent claims that credit.   If the student actually has a tax liability, there is a provision to allow him to claim a non-refundable tuition credit. But then the parent must forgo claiming the student as a dependent, and the $500 other dependent credit.  The student must still indicate that he *can be* claimed as a dependent, on his return. This is worth up to $2500 (AOTC shifts to all non refundable) or $2000 if the student is only eligible for the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC).

@jo1944 ,  I am not sure I understand the question.  Obviously, you can on your  US tax return recognize  the full   or any portion of the earned interest. This is true as long as the total amount is recognized somewhere between your and your spouse's return. Therefore , what are you trying to achieve.  As far as I know there is no language  in the tax treaties requiring a specific apportionment of earnings between spouses  ( except of places like Mexico where communal rules are followed i.e. all marital earnings are equally shared/owned  by the spouses ). Does this answer your query ? BWT -- as a US person , even with a foreign tax-Home, you are still subject to FBAR ( form 114 ate FinCen ) and FATCA ( form 8938 along with your return) regulations.   Is there more I can do for you ?

For you: Under normal tax laws, there is no free money for being disabled or claiming a dependent.  These credits can reduce your taxes (if you owe taxes).  The dependent credit can pay you some money even if you don't owe taxes, but only if you have income earned from working.     There was a temporary change during the pandemic, but that expired.  For 2024, if your only income is SSA, it is not taxable and there are no refundable credits.   However, Turbotax is "free to start" online, so you can always start a return and see for yourself.  When you get to the end and you don't owe and don't get a refund, you can stop without completing the filing process.     For someone else who could claim you: If there is someone else who can claim you as a dependent, you do not need to file a return just for that reason.  You only need to file if you have other income that is not from SSA.  Your SSA income is NOT included on the other person's tax return.

@omnipheasant   Read through this entire thread as there are multiple suggestions you can try to get you where you need to be.  Most of the suggestions are as 'simple' as making sure all of the same hardware is plugged into your computer, ie:  usb drives, memory sticks, printers, etc.    Is this the exact same computer you used to do your taxes back in 2022?  If so, have you done a scrub and reinstall of the operating system on the hard drive in your pc?  Or, replaced the hard drive and had to re-install all your software? Good luck, and my final post in the thread contains some suggestions that will prevent this disaster from happening in the future.  Plus, purchasing TT on a CD is no longer an option as of this year, it would seem, as I was forced to go the 'download' route for the first time in 25+ years.

@Arneoker , (a) you recognize the income in the year that you received the income (b) for US tax purposes, only US status is recognized i.e.  US Person ( citizen/GreenCard/Resident for Tax Purposes ) -- taxed on world income   OR   Non-Resident Alien -- taxed only on US sourced income. (c)  Because there is no "in-effect" tax treaty between US and Colombia, there is no "double taxation" protection -- implying taxes paid to Colombia on Colombia sourced income is not eligible for "foreign tax credit". (d)  You could report this  "pension" lump sum payment as a 1099-R equivalent, especially if she had contributed to the fund i.e. reduce the taxable income by the amount she had paid in during her period of participation.   Is there more I can do for you ?
