While entering your form 1099-R, if you have entered a birth date which makes you older than 70 1/2 in the tax year, TurboTax will ask you if any portion of your distribution was transferred to charity. You can then enter the amount transferred to charity.  It asks everyone who is 70 1/2 and gets a 1099R.   The code in box 7 of form 1099-R must be 7 and the box IRA/SEP/SIMPLE must be checked. You can’t do a QCD from a 401K.

the IRS did not reject my return! Turbotax is **unable to transmit it**. my return was not submitted to the IRS at all. I just checked the IRS website. *they do not have a return on file for my SS number!*  4 different people from turbotax confirmed this is a Turbotax issue.

We cannot see your screen, your tax return or your account.  Have you entered ALL of your 2024 information?  All your income, etc.?    There are a lot of variables that affect your refund or tax due including how much you earned, how much tax you had withheld, your filing status, the number of dependents you claim, your deductions and credits, etc.  You may have lost Earned Income Credit or the Child Tax Credit— did a child turn 17?  If you received the EIC last year, remember that changes in the amount you earn have a big effect on the amount of EIC you can get. (Sometimes earning more money means less EIC)  Are you 65 or older ?  If so, your standard deduction is higher. Everyone has a higher standard deduction now so it is harder to use itemized deductions.   And of course, always check your own data entries, looking for errors such as misplaced decimals or extra zeros.   https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/tax-refund/refund-go-compared-last-year/L97JmhUbi_US_en_US?uid=ld9ijm41   Print out 2023  and 2024  and compare them side by side to see what is different.    https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tips/tax-payments/video-why-would-i-owe-federal-taxes/L3VXudPiN

@zzzz4 Don't know who you spoke with, but they are incorrect.  Once the IRS has received a tax return with the same Social Security number and name as you are e-filing from your tax return, the IRS will reject your tax return.   Do you have the exact rejection code that was used by the IRS to reject your tax return?  The message is kind of generic so having the actual rejection code would help to better identify the problem.   After completing the File section and e-filing your tax return you will receive two emails from TurboTax. The first email when your tax return was transmitted and the second email when the tax return has either been accepted or rejected.
No. Do not amend. Wait until your original return is fully processed, meaning you have received your refund. If the IRS needs something they will mail you a letter telling you what they need.

I have a copy of the check and the request from the employer for the repayment. Is it necessary to file an amended return for this info or should I wait to see if my refund is approved?

Only the IRS and your State control when and if a Federal or State tax refund is Approved and Issued.   Once a tax return has been Accepted by the IRS or a State, TurboTax receives no further information concerning the tax return or the status of any tax refund.   You will need to contact your state department of revenue to find out why the state tax refund is still showing as processing after two months, See this TurboTax support FAQ for how to contact the state department of revenue, by state - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/state-taxes/contact-state-department-revenue/L9qVToi02_US_en_US?uid=m9vv51jf

Once your return is filed, TurboTax has no control over the processing of your return or the release of your refund.   Here are a couple FAQs to track your refund: When will I get my federal tax refund? How do I track my state refund? Why does Where's My Refund say "approved" but TurboTax still says "accepted"? Why do some refunds take longer than others? What if my IRS refund is taking longer than 21 days?
It keeps saying processing

Have you called the IRS and expressed concern about the possibility of a fraudulent return being filed under you SSN?
What’s the update? Did you receive it? I haven’t got mine yet it’s almost 2 months already.

Lukester1980, I’m going to caution you that I can only give you my uneducated guess/opinion. But the way I understand the regulations is, yes you can gift 18,000 to your son and another 18,000 to your daughter-in-law and your wife can do the same for a net total of 72,000 for the 2024 tax year. Possibly your question could be better answered by the provider of the software, is it possible there is an override for that field where you can put in an excess of 36,000 ? is there a way to stay within that 36,000 by only reporting for your son, then in another column or field report that amount to your daughter-in-law for her 36,000 ? Might be worth emailing the provider of that 709 tax form software.   I will admit that it took me much longer to figure all of that out by hand than it did to do my entire taxes with TurboTax. I’m curious as to when did you file your original 709 with the IRS that they did not accept, just wondering how long it took between you mailing in it and then the IRS letting you know that they were not happy with your 709 submission. I submitted my 709 around April 9 or so and I’ve not heard back from them if they had a problem with how I did it. However I fully understand that could still happen any time within my lifetime🤬
How do I save my progress in TurboTax and come back tomorrow to finish
haha, yeah, thought of that too but that's not what happened. As I said before, there was no return filed with the IRS. so it's definitely not identity theft! it is a turbotax issue.
