E-filing has been permanently closed for 2023 returns since the end of October 2024.  The only way to file 2023 now is by mail.  Print, sign and date the return in ink, and mail it.   When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.   Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

Yes, your daughter will likely need to pay taxes on the income reported on the 1099-NEC. The IRS considers income reported on a 1099-NEC as taxable self-employment income   To enter the Form 1099-NEC in TurboTax: Open or continue your return. Navigate to 1099-NEC: TurboTax Online/Mobile: Go to 1099-NEC. TurboTax Desktop: Search for 1099-NEC and select the Jump to link. Follow the onscreen instructions. When you’re done, we’ll ask you a few questions and help you through entering any expenses you may have so that you can reduce your taxable income. Not all efile rejection codes are fixable.  Then you have to mail your return.  Mail that could take over a week. That's the case I worry about.

This happens because on one pass, you entered a number of excess contributions to withdraw, and on the next pass you didn't, and the first number is "stuck".   The first thing you should do is file an extension. I am going to give you a lot of typing in order to fix this, so if you are on the East Coast or in the Central Time Zone, it may be pushing it to file before midnight.   Then after you file the extension, you will do an "HSA RESET". This is a process through which you delete all your HSA data so you can do the HSA interview from scratch without this pesky number that is "stuck".   ***HSA Reset***   1. make a copy of your W-2(s) (if you don't have the paper copies) 2. delete your W-2(s) (use the garbage can icon next to the W-2(s) on the Income screen)   *** Desktop*** 3. go to View (at the top), choose Forms, and select the desired form(s) - 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one). Note the Delete Form button at the bottom of the screen.   *** Online ***  3. go to Tax Tools (on the left), and navigate to Tools->Delete a form 4. delete form(s) 1099-SA (if one), 8889-T, and 8889-S (if one)   5. go back and re-add your W-2(s), preferably adding them manually 6. go back and redo the entire HSA interview....     I would rather you file the extension now, so you can do the HSA RESET at a leisurely pace tomorrow.
